Recently published in theBMJ:

Findings suggest that an offspring's risk of autism spectrum disorder increases following prenatal exposure to ambient pesticides within 2000 m of their mother's residence during pregnancy, compared with offspring of women from the same agricultural region without such exposure. Infant exposure could further increase risks for autism spectrum disorder with comorbid intellectual disability.

Risk of autism spectrum disorder was associated with prenatal exposure to glyphosate (odds ratio 1.16, 95% confidence interval 1.06 to 1.27), chlorpyrifos (1.13, 1.05 to 1.23), diazinon (1.11, 1.01 to 1.21), malathion (1.11, 1.01 to 1.22), avermectin (1.12, 1.04 to 1.22), and permethrin (1.10, 1.01 to 1.20).

For autism spectrum disorder with intellectual disability, estimated odds ratios were higher (by about 30%) for prenatal exposure to glyphosate (1.33, 1.05 to 1.69), chlorpyrifos (1.27, 1.04 to 1.56), diazinon (1.41, 1.15 to 1.73), permethrin (1.46, 1.20 to 1.78), methyl bromide (1.33, 1.07 to 1.64), and myclobutanil (1.32, 1.09 to 1.60); exposure in the first year of life increased the odds for the disorder with comorbid intellectual disability by up to 50% for some pesticide substances.

This story has been kicking around for over 10 years, my first recollection of it was an Italian study I read back in 2007, though this is the first time I have seen Permethrin implicated as a risk factor.

At first I thought you were referring to the last debate I had on this dumbass website with a bunch of people who stuck their heads up their ass regarding some basically decent epidemiological evidence regarding marijuana's side effects, and I was so mad.

        But then I realized
        A. You didn't participate in that conversation
        B. You're probably referring to wakefield's fraud.

And yeah, you're right. The methodology of this study is way better than the entirely imagined connection between vaccines and autism. That astonishingly obvious fact bears repeating, because we're getting deadly disease outbreaks caused by conspiracy theorists.

because we're getting deadly disease outbreaks caused by conspiracy theorists.

Yes, yes we are. And yes, Wakefield was wrong. On the other hand, what's the death toll so far on vaccine outbreaks that "could have been prevented" had mothers not vaccinated? Let's compare that number to 30 million (~2.5 billion births since 1998 / 83), which would be a rough estimate of the number of ASD births since Wakefield published ~20 years ago.

Repeating for the short of attention span: Wakefield was wrong - there is no direct: take an MMR shot -> increase your risk of Autism correlation ever shown.

On the other hand, we have had ~30 million ASD births since 1998, and the rate of ASD births diagnosed has roughly tripled in those 20 years, a whole other issue/debate onto itself, but let's at least agree that the ASD rate has not fallen in that timeframe.

Raise the hue and cry over vaccination, because it's something we know how to address, but, in the end, the negative results of all these mothers listening to Jenny McCarthy instead of their science based government advisers has resulted in a tiny tiny fraction of the harm to society caused by - we know not what, but it has raised the rate of ASD, across the spectrum from mild to severe, by a factor of hundreds compared to 50 years ago - and had far greater impact on society, including death rates, than the vaccination non-compliance blip.

To be fair to the murderous psychopaths who kill children because of pseudoscience: this is only a 30% relative risk between lowest exposure and highest exposure, suggesting something besides pesticides cause the other cases.

There is strong evidence of connection between autism and immune system issues, which in turn may be triggered by many factors, including pesticides and immunization. On a related note, GMO are often designed to tolerate higher pesticides levels or even create pesticides naturally.

The Italian study back about 20 years ago was finding correlations between organo-phosphate (pesticide/fertilizer) exposure and early neurodevelopment patterns similar to ASD: primarily reduced connection pruning, but other factors too.

For all the people who are so pissed at Wakefield/McCarthy followers for starting their own counter-science experiment, it's remarkable how few raise a similar cry about Monsanto filling our grocery stores with wall-to-wall products raised in Roundup.

Maybe children could be systemically presented earlier with a safe form of the pesticide, so their immune/metabolic systems would recognize it as a legitimate invasive substance and learn to reject it. Probably introduced into the bloodstream, via a series of injections or something like that.

Funny (not really, but I know you're trying.)

Pesticides, hallucinogens, etc. aren't biological agents which you develop immune responses to.

I suppose you do develop tolerance to things like opium, and require higher and higher doses to get the same high... but atypical neurodevelopment isn't like getting high on drugs, it's more like being wired to be "out there" all the time.
