CNet:

I thought the precautions would reduce how much data Facebook gathered about me. Turns out, I was wasting my time.

Even when your account is deactivated, the social network continues collecting data about your online activities. All that data gets sent back to Facebook and is tied to your account while it's in this state of limbo. It's as if you'd changed nothing.

Facebook says it only removes all of your data if you permanently delete your account. Deactivating isn't as extreme, the company says, and the social network continues collecting your data in case you change your mind and want to return to your profile. Facebook expects deactivated users to return and wants to continue serving them ads relevant to their new interests.

In Soviet America, Facebook will deactivate you?

CrossFit, Inc. Suspends Use of Facebook and Associated Services

CrossFit has announced in a press release that it has closed its Facebook accounts as of May 22, 2019. CrossFit is an almost 20 year old branded fitness regimen. Its press release goes into quite a bit of detail into the problems caused by use of Facebook and its subsidiary services such as Instagram and enumerates eight specific examples of deal-breakers.

CrossFit, Inc. Suspends Use of Facebook and Associated Properties After Unexplained Ban

CrossFit, Inc. defends relentlessly the right of its affiliates, trainers, and athletes to practice CrossFit, build voluntary CrossFit associations and businesses, and speak openly and freely about the ideas and principles that animate our views of exercise, nutrition, and health. This website—and, until recently, CrossFit's Facebook and Instagram accounts—has long catalogued CrossFit's tireless defense of its community against overreaching governments, malicious competitors, and corrupt academic organizations.

Recently, Facebook deleted without warning or explanation the Banting7DayMealPlan user group. The group has 1.65 million users who post testimonials and other information regarding the efficacy of a low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet. While the site has subsequently been reinstated (also without warning or explanation), Facebook's action should give any serious person reason to pause, especially those of us engaged in activities contrary to prevailing opinion.

How is this surprising? I just bought some plane tickets on spirit's website and saw it connected to facebook for some reason.

Also, I drove by 1 Hacker Way last year and it was ridiculous. You could smell indian food from miles away from either direction.

      So Zuck likes Indian food?

            I'm simply reporting facts.

Fact 1. I drove by 1 Hacker Way twice last year from opposite directions.
Fact 2. Both times I could smell Indian food from miles away.

Who could come up with a lie like that?

                  Apparently, you.

Some folks actually know that area.

Unless you were on the way to FB (you're an uber driver perhaps? Or maybe part of the cleaning staff?), you didn't get within 500 yards of the place. Because there isn't much there except the FB campus. If you weren't going to FB, I'm not sure how you could smell anything from University Avenue or the 101.

If your claim (that you drove by) was actually true, you'd know that. So that leaves it at you making an oblique, negative reference to the ethnicity of the folks who work there.

What's more, there aren't any Indian restaurants within *miles* of FB HQ. Some half-decent Taquerias though. But I guess it's not as much fun to make bigoted remarks about Mexicans when talking about tech companies, huh?

You're busted. But that's a good thing. Now you don't have to hide your bigotry any more. That will be a relief, won't it?

      Yes. That!

Why complain about Facebook tracking you after you delete your account, when others of us get tracked without ever having even created an account?

You could smell indian food from miles away from either direction.

So would this not happen if, somehow, we could get Facebook to stop tracking us? What are you saying? Trump promised, PROMISED during his campaign, that if Hillary won, we would get a taco truck on every street corner. I want my taco trucks! Is Trump's occupancy of the office the reason you smell the indian food instead of taco trucks?

he's saying that trump promised, promised, to ex-IT workers that had been replaced by the Indian outsourcing firm HCL, that he'd do something to keep jobs in America. He had some ex-Disney IT worker get on stage with him at a campaign rally.

there are more Indians from overseas on temporary visas learning the jobs they will do when they go back home to train others. HCL even replaced my job. at first there was fear among the outsourcers, then they learned that giving cash donations smooths over a lot. look at hcl americas lobbying groups. they'd never been so busy; wipro and tata all got in on it too. it costs money to make money, but not very much.

    You never created an account.

As such, it's always a good idea to use uBlock Origin/Ghostery/auto cookie delete tools/etc.

Even if you're opposed to Ad/tracking blockers, go ahead and install some for a day and see how many non- Facebook sites are tracking/sending data to Facebook, even if you haven't logged in to the site and cleared your cookies.

Or don't. That's up to you.

With uMatrix, I have red-listed (eg, black listed) a number of sites, including any facebook domains I encounter.

Since FB and other "anti social" networks track you without your permission nor creating an account, maybe there could be legislation that stops this. Especially those "anti social" media buttons on many web sites where you see an FB icon and other hideous anti social network buttons -- and the JavaScript code and God only knows what else, comes along with those buttons.

I also use Firefox. The relevant add-ons I use are uBlockOrigin, Ghostery and CookieAutoDelete. Many people also use NoScript, which allows you to selectively block Javascript. I don't use NoScript. Rather, I disabled javascript completely [technipages.com].

While not ad/tracking related, I also use HTTPS Everywhere [eff.org] which will default all connections to https, assuming the site supports it. Most do.

I'm sure some other folks will have suggestions too. Good luck.

          I use only uMatrix.

It has a built in list.

It gives you fine grained control. For example, html / css from this third party site is okay, but not JS or frames.

It makes very clear how many 3rd party sites a single page is bringing in, and what types of things (eg, html, css, js, frames, etc) from those third party sites.
