135 miles out to sea in the Gulf of Thailand, a lone dog swims up to an oil rig and is rescued by rig workers.
Workers on an oil rig noticed the pooch's head poking out above the ripples as she paddled through the ocean last Friday.
They called out to the exhausted animal - which is between three and five years old - and she swam towards them, taking refuge among the rusty metal bars of the rig.
Workers lowered a rope down and plucked the dog up to safety.
'After she made it onto the bars below the rig she didn't cry or bark at all. We looked for a way to help her and in the end, decided to use the rope to tie around her body to lift her up.
'When we first took her onboard her she was depressed and tired from being in the water for a long time . She had lost her body water.
After two days of care and feeding (and lots of pictures apparently), the dog was placed in a rather luxurious cage welded together just for her and placed on a passing oil tanker and taken to shore to a vet.
If an owner is not found one of the workers on the rig that rescued her wants to adopt the dog.
Pictures and Video of the entire saga are in TFA.

Even Wikipedia has deemed the Daily Mail as an "unreliable" source of facts.
And I'm not sure where the science/technology angle is here; it is likely (as posted above) that this animal was thrown off another vessel much closer to the rig than the "alleged" 135 miles (which is basically the bait to lure your click).

I'd agree that the dog likely started swimming much less than 135 miles from the rig, or had a heck of a current-assist. Polar Bears can, and recently quite often do, swim more than 100 miles in ocean crossings, but a domestic dog isn't built for it.
Funny that they say it seemed depressed - the swim-test for depression is a lot like the Salem witch test: throw a test subject in the water, the length of time before they give up swimming and drown is the measure of depression, shorter time = more depressed. (Actually, there's a training phase with a platform they search for and the final test is removal of the platform with measurement of time searching for the non-existent platform.) I'd say this dog was more exhausted and dehydrated than depressed.

Dog has long toenails that have been that way for a long time (long enough for the nail bed to adapt to the extra pressure and change growth angle). So it hasn't spent much time on dirt or concrete. It also generally lacks muscle, tho it's in good weight otherwise, so eats regularly but doesn't get much exercise. At a guess, the dog has lived most of its life on a local boat (something small, with wooden decks), and fell off unnoticed -- no more than a few miles from where it was rescued.

I would say the Daily Mail is very obviously a poor source of facts. Throughout the entire article they refer to the dog as SHE/HER, but there are several pictures in the article where it is hard to miss that the dog has testicles. Unless they are suggesting the dog is transsexual....
