It was only a matter of time. With each subsequent Matrix sequel released it grew clearer that the story was not ended. There would be more. Possibly to explain what exactly happened in the third movie, and why the second was even ever needed. So, now, here it comes: A fourth matrix film is reported to be in the works with Keanu stating that he would not turn down the opportunity to be Neo again. This may be the answer to the loyal followers of the Fanimatrix who have asked for a long time if there would be a sequel.

Maybe they will just retcon the lot, throw it all down the well as Neo's nightmare, and save the series with a decent ending.

Seriously, look it up, did the one brother, then turned out the other brother too. I've been curious what happened to the wife and child of the second brother, since he was married and had one or more kids... There wasn't mention of a divorce, which even if legal seems unusual unless they were already into some kinky crossdresser roleplaying.

It depends on the relationship. Many relationships can't survive gender transition, and others do.

My impression of the legal situation before we got free Obamacare gay marriage was that gender transition was the only way to wind up gay married since the legal construct of the marriage sort of gets grandfathered in to the whole deal. I forget if anywhere in the USA, but I think it's Germany (and Iran, which has 50% off discount Shahcare sex changes) where gender transition automatically annuls the marriage.

There is Jennifer Finney Boylan's [wikipedia.org] autobiography, She's Not There: A Life in Two Genders. It's a decent read, though keep in mind working class trans women (i.e. the vast majority of trans women who have more in common with working class white cis+hets than they do with Boylan) do not have it anywhere near as easy as one of the neoliberal elite. Nevertheless, it is an example of a relationship that survived gender transition.

If you read that, I recommend the essay Transphobia is a Class Issue [libcom.org] by Anarchasteminist as supplemental material. Presumably that essay would also apply to the Wachowski sisters.

Look, I can say several good things about those sequels!

There was a good thumping soundtrack by Juno Reactor in the second Matrix. Or was it the third? Ah, and maybe it was just one track.

And like Indy 4 wasn't as terrible as some said it was. Mostly. Well, some parts. Okay, a scene or two.

      ...

Okay, maybe I can say a couple of not-entirely mean thing about those sequels. Possibly.

You're right, the music was sometimes good. Duel of the Fates from Ep. 1.

These movies are aging well in comparison with the awful Disney Star Wars films.

It wasn't the quality of the films, the acting was pretty wooden, but could be forgiven.

The problem with Ep1 was it was written around putting a 10 year old kid in the role of Anakin. Then it needed some insane CGI JarJar/Gungans to handle the toilet humour. But, what pisses off fans the most is the virgin birth and the midichlorians. Let's take something that was mysterious and spiritual and try to turn it into something scientific. Like if you inject me with a bunch of midichlorians I can be a superJedi too. Or if I'm born with bugger all midichlorians, then I'm shit out of luck - no amount of dedication and training will help me. People don't like that shit.

Ep2 and 3 were too full of teen angst and pointless violence that went against what we knew of the character(s).

Thank you for pointing out the light speed attack thing, that has been bugging me since I saw it. Why couldn't they have used that to take out the death stars several films ago? Why couldn't they have used it at the beginning of THIS film? Why aren't all SW space battles just engagements between drone lightspeed missiles and corresponding countermeasures?

Also... the whole plot of that film, the entire madcap adventure / "mission" followed by the so-called heroes, achieves ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. The Rebellion would have been in much better shape if those dipshits had just followed orders and stayed put. And they don't even get courtmartialled. Utterly pointless.

This was a disappointment because I really enjoyed the Force Awakens (yeah, it borrowed / stole from the original, I don't care) and loved Rogue One. I had high hopes for ep8. The Lando film was meh.

Eh, I was at least entertained by most of those (Highlander 2 isn't too bad with the alien stuff removed)

I actually liked Batman Forever (might have had something to do with Nicole Kidman). Batman and Robin was mostly dumb, but I did like Uma's performance as Poison Ivy.

The Star Wars Prequels are much better without the Anakin - Padamame/Panda bear/whatever her name was romance scenes and Jar Jar antics. There are several recut versions out there that removes most of that crap, some are quite good.

ST5 was a turkey due to Shatner directing and a writer's strike, but it had several excellent scenes.

You can add Star Wars VII, VIII, and IX to the list of never want to see. VII was a bunch of nostalgic / cinematic "wow" / drivel, with an Emo "bad" guy. I will never watch VIII or IX. In contrast, the Han Solo movie was great, and Rogue One was awesome. Unfortunately, they didn't do as good with the continuous series.

I found the Matrix 2 to be an interesting film that could have been saved by a good #3. You know, like a oh wow, realization that they're still in the Matrix . . . as opposed to "Magic".

Go and read the Han Solo and Lando Calrissian Trilogies from the 1970s/80s and see if you still feel Solo did justice to their respective backgrounds. It was, based on the characters and some plot summarizing, a 'canon' retcon of a far better origin story/handoff plot for the Falcon introducing us to younger versions of Lando, Han, and Chewbacca, as well as a unique and plucky pair of droids that better gave an idea of both the prejudices and eventual grudging respect given between meatbags and machines.

Luca's Pantoran(?) cameo and some later animated series character were also ripoffs of the Near-Human Wroonian race from the extended universe and within nerd circles, popularized in the WEG D6 Star Wars RPG game, which had a variety of colorful Wroonian characters in various source books and stories.

(Strange it's harder to find this using Google nowadays but I could find it with Bing! e.g. site:slashdot.org oracle matrix neo cookies "TheLink" works for Bing but not for Google )

I don't see the sequels as bad or stupid.

The idea that the machines want humans as batteries is merely what Morpheus claimed. It may be true in the inner Matrix world, but may not be for the outer matrix worlds. Remember even in the first movie the question was asked: "What if when you woke up, you didn't know the difference between the dream world, and the real world?"

So my interpretation is the Oracle is trying to upgrade herself- she believes humans have something the machines don't. Think of the whole thing as a "hybrid/breeding program".

Neo is likely at least partly a machine[1] (and a special one). The Oracle gives Neo cookies to add features/upgrades at critical moments.

After each world iteration (you can see the previous Neos try and fail etc), Neo has a chance of becoming more human but crucially retaining the abilities of machines. Smith goes about merging with all the humans and other machines, including the Oracle (who still _somehow_ retains enough of herself to prompt Neo), and Neo merges with Smith.

If things go fine, the Oracle gets her upgrade... If things go wrong, as the Architect said, the Oracle is playing a dangerous game.

As you can see, there's still plenty of room for reasonable interpretations.

Of course the upcoming sequels could prove that it really was stupid ;).

[1] FWIW, in the first movie the humans themselves mention "he's a machine" they weren't serious of course, but the film writers might be dropping hints.
