Great engineers love solving problems. Fortunately for Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Lisa Su is one of them, and she has a knack for dealing with the semiconductor industry's hardest ones.

After getting her doctorate in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Su, 49, played a key leadership role in IBM 's groundbreaking work using copper to replace aluminum interconnects in computer chips, making them faster and more energy efficient.

In 2012, the year she joined AMD, the company was in trouble. AMD lost more than $1 billion as its products drastically underperformed Intel's. But Su was undaunted and excited to come aboard. "I've always been attracted to solving really tough problems," she says. "Problems actually create opportunities."

After becoming CEO in October 2014, she quickly refocused the company on its core high-performance computing business, establishing an ironclad policy of meeting commitments to customers.

[...]

During Su's tenure as CEO, AMD stock has risen more than 800%. The shares are up 80% this year through June 10, and AMD was the No. 1–performing stock in the S&P 500 index last year.

Su's technical expertise and intuition were critical to this resurgence. "I love spending time with the engineers, going into the lab, and getting a feel for what the real challenges are, because it just helps me make better decisions on the business," she says.

So, what is it all about? The corporate world respects nothing other than success. They rounded up a half dozen successful people, to tell us how we can be successful? Not really - it doesn't examine how any of these people became successful.

Other than being successful, I don't see what any of these people have in common. I'm not aware of any of those names in SJW context. The fact that females outnumber males lends credence to the SJW angle, fair or not.

OK, I scrolled past the conclusion of TFA, and found other articles in the theme of "best CEO's". There is no indication of how good a person those CEO's are, how moral, how ethical, or how human. These are all money-makers. Good enough, I guess. I suppose that this magazine has done an article on Trump at some time in the past. "Best money making real estate scam artist" or something similar.

Kurt Vonnegut wrote that CEOs are nothing more than persuasive guessers. They combine the prehistoric art of storytelling with the knack for making decisions that sometimes turn out to be correct. The article even uses the term “big bet” in talking about Su which underscores this point— the decisions that have to be made by a CEO are so complex and rely on so much information relating to the future, that, frankly, I think that there’s a very large element of luck involved, and they receive far more credit than they deserve. And merit based compensation? Don’t make me laugh. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard a CEO of a company I’ve worked for who has missed earnings say “Sorry, market conditions have changed unexpectedly”. Mr./Ms. CEO, it is your job to get that right— it is YOUR fault and not the market’s. And chances are approximately zero that their personal financial asses are really on the line.

I’m glad to see someone with a real engineering background like Su lead her company so successfully. I wish these success stories didn’t spill over onto all of the other pretender CEOs out there. I’m sure I don’t have to give examples to this crowd.
