FAA Prohibits Recalled MacBook Pros from Flights:
Some Macbook Pros have been banned from flights by US aviation safety regulators. The move comes less than two months after Apple recalled the older laptops over a risk of battery fire.
The Federal Aviation Administration, confirming an earlier report by Bloomberg, said it was "aware of the recalled batteries that are used in some Apple MacBook Pro laptops" and in July had alerted major US airlines of the recall. It also reminded carriers that rules issued in 2016 prohibit transporting products that have been the subject of a safety recall either in the cabin or as cargo until they have been repaired of[sic] replaced.
Apple initiated the voluntary recall in June, warning that 15-inch Pros sold between September 2015 and February 2017 "contain a battery that may overheat and pose a safety risk." The company also asked customers to stop using the affected units.

This really has gone far enough. Crappy keyboards, dwindling battery life, batteries that catch fire . . . can we please have a trend back towards "thick enough to be useful" laptops?

But the IBM Model M keyboard has a weird 5 pin DIN connector. Not a nice USB connector (that can pretend to be a USB hub with storage and other devices, plus a keyboard). So modern keyboards are better. This message was approved by the NSA.

Um, I thought it was a P/S2 connector which has 6 conductors https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PS/2_port, [wikipedia.org] on the other side of the detachable cord. Upon review of the Source of All Knowledge, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Model_M_keyboard, [wikipedia.org] I see that there were variants with an AT connector included. I learned something today.

The FAA should simply ban any product with non-removable Li-Ion batteries on flights. Maybe then the makers would be forced to return to actually building products that can have the battery easily removed and replaced by the user, instead of creating throwaway devices.
