AndyTheAbsurd submitted a story that was the inspiration for the following:

Discord, one of the best-known video chat and instant messaging platforms in the video game sector, has confirmed the application of a dismissal process that affects part of its workforce. This internal restructuring has been described as "complicated" by one of the company's representatives.

The business, born in 2015, has had an exponential growth since then, extending as an almost inescapable communication tool for streamers and other content creators for its facilities of voice over IP options available.

A Discord representative made the following statement to GamesIndustry.

Yesterday, we made an active shift in the talent needs of our marketing department to better serve our growing business and future ambitions. As part of this, some difficult personnel decisions had to be made to meet these goals.

Microsoft in talks with Discord over $10 billion-plus acquisition: report

Microsoft is in discussions with Discord to acquire the gaming-focused chat software for more than $10 billion, according to sources talking to Bloomberg. Xbox chief Phil Spencer is said to be talking to Discord about the potential deal.

VentureBeat reported earlier today that Discord was exploring a $10 billion-plus sale after multiple potential buyers expressed interest, and that it had signed an exclusive acquisition discussion with one party, suggesting a deal could be close. Bloomberg's sources say the deal isn't imminent, however, with one person saying Discord would be more likely to take itself public than seek an acquisition.

Bloomberg names Epic Games and Amazon as companies that have also held discussions with Discord in the past.

"Discord is a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), instant messaging and digital distribution platform designed for creating communities."

Have you read any of Discord's messages? They are PR-hot-steamed all the time to the point of disgust. Last release notes ended with noodles recipe. I tend to think they target a certain imbecile audience group overlooked by other marketeers and I'm only glad I don't even know of its existence.

I have lot of contempt for the childish features discord flaunts. But I gotta hand it to them, by monetizing dumb shit like that they're ethically better than a company that wants to survive exclusively on data harvesting.

Their software is better than Slack but they hate privacy.

            Hate privacy?
Their software is accessible by web, and it doesn't do anything that 99% of other websites don't (only the usual web analytics stuff). You don't have to install any nefarious sneaky spyware. Even their desktop app is basically just a thin client wrapped around a web browser, and the only thing it gets you is slightly better integration with your desktop and voice/video hardware. They support two-factor authentication.

It's a platform for mostly public discussion, divided up by area of interest. It's not intended for private communication, although it does support private messages. No, the private messages aren't encrypted, other than the usual https. It's not intended for secure person to person communication. It's approximately Reddit with voice and video.

Even if they did hate privacy, it's not clear what, given the way their software works, this would even mean; they don't have any interesting information.

Use a VPN or they detect something else "suspicious" about your activity? You can't use your account any more until you provide them a phone number.

I never ran into that problem with Slack.

One thing I never got, why would you name a platform for people to build social circles around after the concept of the strife that destroys societies? It's just as badly named as Trojan condoms (the last thing you want from a condom is to smuggle a bunch of soldiers inside of the defensive walls).
