https://reclaimthenet.org/china-lead-un-wipo-copyright-domains/
https://archive.is/txBbG

Earlier this month, China nominated a candidate to become the next leader of the United Nations' (UN) World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). WIPO administrates the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP) – a policy that allows copyright holders to seize web domains and has been criticized for its excessive clampdowns against domain holders.

Concerns over China exporting its censorship through US companies have been on the rise over the last few months. If China's candidate is elected as the head of WIPO, it would give China greater influence over the UDPR and the associated confiscation of domains under this policy.

Critics of UDPR include digital rights group the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) which describes it as a policy that has "been used to clamp down on legitimate parody and criticism in ways that domestic trademark law would not allow.

[...] Wang will compete against six other candidates:

  • Daren Tang (Singapore): The head of Singapore's Intellectual Property Office
  • Kenichiro Natsume (Japan): A senior official in WIPO's Legal and International Affairs Department
  • Saule Tlevlessova (Kazakhstan): The president of the Eurasian Patent Organization
  • Edward Kwakwa (Ghana): A senior director in WIPO's Department for Traditional Knowledge and Global Challenges
  • Marco Alemán (Colombia): WIPO's top patent lawyer
  • Dámaso Pardo (Argentina): The president of Argentina's National Institute of Industrial Property

The last time I used an alternative DNS root, I was working at a non-profit. I thought it would be neat to configure the whole office with alternative DNS. Then the TLD servers for .org changed, and the alternative root didn't update their glue in a timely manner, because the drunken frat boys who ran the root servers didn't care about any TLD that they didn't use. So down .org went. I never used an alternate root again.

Alternative DNS root wont work because it conflicts with existing DNS.

My proposal, DRS, would not, because all DRS hostnames contain ~ which is illegal in a DNS name, so your web browser could support both. Contains ~? must be DRS! No ~? Must be DNS.

DRS = Distributed Record Service. The DNS alternative I've suggested before. It's easily a one man project to do the server software, but administration would require a community.

I would like to launch a DNS alternative, stuff like this going to keep popping up. DNS administration is broken. My model: Each TLD is assigned to a country, no *.com, only ~us.com.*, ~uk.com.*, . etc. Each country keeps its batshit to itself. Each country manages the domains under its TLD via its own legal system.

China can control ~cn.* exclusively, United States controls ~us.* exclusively, etc. No *.com to bitch about on the intermational level with pseudo world governments to deal with. No China fucking with your domain under ~us.*, etc.

Isn't this a little backwards? Shouldn't it be *.com.us~, *.com.uk~, *.com.cn~, etc.? We're already used to going from smallest to largest (subdomain, domain, TLD, optional country code), not the reverse.

Other than that, I've thought for a very long time that this is how DNS should have been organized all along (minus the ~ of course). As long as we have separate nation-states, they're never going to fully agree on how to administer something together, so the easiest thing to do is for them to all have their own namespace, separated by country code.

I meant to say left to right better. Please add edit button soylent admins.
It's kinda ugly, but most characters have other meanings (":" is port, "@" is identification etc.)
Another advantage of left to right is that it makes it more clear if a domain is DRS v.s. DNS by virtue of being different, and it makes URL spoofing harder since just showing the front of the URL is enough to tell if the domain is legit.

This is bad news for winnie the pooh, and every other idea.

I am not sure why the UN has a domain seizing body, it seems like that is an expansion in power and not a very democratic one, it could lead to a very small number of people, or skynet, having veto power over any and all ideas on planet earth.

Even possession of the list of top 10 UN seized domains this year might get you droned or worse.

Seems to me like to date a website has never killed anyone, hurt anyone, or started any revolts, looks to me like humans do all of those things.

To think you can win an argument through domain seizure that you can't win through dialogue is the wrong timeline here, like people who aren't very bright are taking over and don't want us to know.
