Billboard has announced that YouTube streams will be factored into the Billboard 200 albums chart starting early next year. Video streams from other platforms will also count, including Apple, Spotify, Tidal, and Vevo, and Billboard says the change will also impact genre album consumption charts, like country, Latin, and others. Billboard's charts have historically been seen as a barometer of success within the music industry.

Does anybody even pay attention to them any more? Aren't they as obsolete as Variety?

It's widely used by afro-Americans to track which rap artists are selling best, so Kanye knows who to invite onto his next album. Otherwise there's no way to tell them apart.

    1) The artist
    2) The record company wannabees that track these things.

Sad thing is, these tend to win out over actual good music, as opposed to sticking to the formula.

/ check out Obsidian Tide for some new, really good music

...you just have to ignore the Mainstream Media

      Quite right.

In my opinion it is due to the consolidation of the industry. Once the big record companies bought up all the competition they were free to decide what would get on the charts which is what they do now.

The record companies have looked at McDonald's business model with jealousy for many years, and now they can replicate it by producing the same thing again and again and people will buy it.

Of course that will never stop people making music, because people have always made music, but it does mean that if you're not churning out Big Macs the main stream will ignore you.

Lots of people love Big Macs, even really, really rich people, that I will tell you. It’s the stuff people really like. Believe me.

Album sales are good metric since someone has to like a band so much to go out and purchase their album. An impression isn't a sale, and it doesn't have the same context. I can stream a song and not like it, or want to purchase it. Mixing these two up will just create a useless metric.

I think it comes down to boomers not understanding the internet. The only difference between listening to a song on radio and listening to it on youtube is the infrastructure behind the broadcast. Radio isn't the same as buying the 8-track. Youtube/radio can prevent you from listening to some band by not broadcasting them. There is still a gatekeeper.

And so we need our rules to see who is the biggest monkey who should get the most bananas. While the monkeys' eyes are on the bananas, no one notices that the rules determining the distribution of bananas are almost completely arbitrary and often change to make sure the right monkeys get the bananas.

No offense intended to either, whose artistic merit will ultimately be judged by history. And if you think I'm excluding any of us from my screed, you have misread my intent, monkey boy. Take your eye off the banana and look at the system.
