2019 Was the Year When Windows 10 Conquered the Desktop:

Windows 10, the operating system that Microsoft officially launched in mid-2015, became the number one desktop platform in 2020 after it managed to overtake its predecessor Windows 7.

[...] NetMarketShare [reports] Windows 10 started the year with 40.90% market share before dropping to 40.30% the next month. It reached a market share of 54.30% in November and ended 2020 with a personal record of 54.62%.

Windows 7, on the other hand, lost market share throughout the year, obviously because of the approaching end of support set for January 14. Windows 7 was running on 37.19% of the devices worldwide 12 months ago and then dropped gradually to a market share of 26.64% in December. With less than two weeks left until the end-of-life is reached, the market share of Windows 7 is very likely to continue going down, albeit not all devices will be upgraded before this milestone is reached.

Needless to say, the rest of the operating systems are far behind and pose no threat to the dominance of Windows 10. For example, Windows 8.1 is running on just 3.63% of the systems worldwide, while macOS 10.14 has a market share of 3.50%.

so shit that was forced on people has replaced shit that was pushed on people and people are used to shit, so yay, shit.

Excluding corporate computers (the vast majority), I'd expect private ownership of Apple computes is a much bigger percentage.

These days, should they include android and apple on phones, as most people now use their phone for many/most things that used to require a desktop or laptop?

      No.

With the rise of Uber and Lyft, there's some urban dwellers who have given up on owning a car, because the cost of using Uber/Lyft for the few times they really need one is less than the total monthly cost of car ownership. So should the makes/models of Uber/Lyft cars be counted multiple times, for once every different user of those services? Of course not.

The phones and tablets and chromebooks and TVs absolutely need to be counted, as they are true computers. I use a company-provided Windows box only for work. Some use Windows for gaming at home. Outside of that, Windows is too high maintenance for a casual user.

Because you don't do the same things on a PC that you do on a phone, though there is some overlap of course, and things are different now than they were 15 years ago. e.g., years ago, using Facebook is something that was normally done only on a PC because phones weren't capable enough, but now people use their phones a lot for that. Before that, some of us used things like IRC to chat with people, but now people communicate primarily with their phones I would think, while desktop OSes are used more for things that just don't work well on phones, like photo/movie editing, spreadsheets, etc. 15+ years ago, movie editing on a home PC was basically impossible.

Basically, the definition of "personal computing" is changing.

Basically, the problem here is that you aren't agreeing with the story's authors, or with me, about what exactly we want to measure and compare here. You want to measure "what OS is used for doing basic computing tasks". That's not what the article is about. It's asking "what OS is used for desktop PCs". It's a different question. The fact that phones are taking over a lot of casual computing tasks, and that many people are even giving up on general-purpose PCs in favor of phones and tablets isn't relevant to what the article is examining, which is simply what OS is dominating that platform.

Video editing on the PC was definitely possible back then. You did need to have an extension card, but then, having extension cards in your PC was quite common in those days anyway. Oh, and you had to schedule some serious time for the final encoding step (but that was non-interactive, so you could do it over night).

Microsoft has forced Windows 10 on everyone because they want to invade your privacy (and possibly sell your data to advertisers) with telemetry and forced ads in the start menu, while removing useful functionality like Windows Media Center. Microsoft forces unwanted updates on users, delivers a garbage product, and can stop supporting older systems at the whim of any of the Jew managers. The quality of Windows has declined as the development is outsourced to curry niggers, sand niggers, and ragheads, none of whom possess the technical skills of American workers. It's unfortunate that American society is obsessed with the teaching of Milton Friedman, who taught that the sole obligation of corporations to society is to maximize their profits, also known as the relentless pursuit of shekels. The news about Windows 10's market share is an unfortunate sign that the kikes are winning. Unfortunately, there are no viable alternatives. Linux is polluted by SJW-led systemd while MacOS has sharply declined in quality as Apple's management has also become obsessed with the almighty shekel.

Good science fiction warned us about the danger of allowing Jews to run our economic system. The Ferengi in Star Trek represent the dangers of allowing the pursuit of shekels to dominate society. They are portrayed as buffoons and their greed is almost always portrayed in an awful manner. The Ferengi clearly were intended to represent Jews, and Star Trek made no attempt to hide this. That's why Ferengi were generally played by Jewish actors, which definitely appears to be an intentional decision by the producers.

Get the Jews out of Microsoft and Apple. Get the SJWs out of Linux. Let's get rid of Windows 10, recent versions of MacOS, and systemd.

Young Padawan, it is not the greed of Jews that makes them dangerous, it is their tribalism. The motivation for control of the money is a very lucrative byproduct, but believe it or not, some Jews are poor -- if you need proof of that, watch Fiddler on the Roof. He had to buy a fiddle because he couldn't afford a cello or double-bass. I knew a Jew who was so poor he tried to suck dick for a hit of skag but wasn't payed because his john wanted a deep-throat but the addict's big nose kept bumping into his John's pubes, limiting the throat travel.

However, all Jews serve loyalty to their tribe first, to Israel second, to wealth third, and to their host nations either fourth or last depending on how drunk you get them when you ask. But some of the foods are good ('dem knishes and latkes) if you can avoid the gefelte fish.

'The jews' is the formulation that I don't like and have never liked, I wouldn't like being grouped with all 'the whites' either really. Not even 'the jews' know what 'the jews' are, and they are in a huge argument at the moment about all of this, with some of them calling Bernie Sanders a nazi. It is anti-intellectual to overgeneralize, so I recommend polite terms be used and racism avoided.

      I made this to explain, https://archive.ph/vgXKj [archive.ph]

You are btw now talking with someone who took a 4 month acting class on shakespeare with one of the greatest shakespearan actors alive, Armin Shimmerman, you may know him as Quark.

He lives in a very modest house in north hollywood and was extremely gracious, he let me rehearse a scene from Midsummer Nights in his living room for an extra practice before our final class. Class with him was a lot of fun. I sincerely doubt he is in on any conspiracies or that he played the role intentionally to villify jewish people, nor would he have done so had that been the case. Penny penching hard nose bargaining is present in all races and classes of people.

Oddly, despite my hard anti-zionist stance here at SN, ethanol has not once engaged with me. Do you not find this odd? I do.

The reason you feel you have to go full racism against jewish people is that there is currently no space in dialogue to talk about zionism, the ideogy behind israeli imperialism and things like the windows/azure cathedral hq being moved to israel, quietly. Antizionism is covertly censored at reddit with a 'closed group', odd eh? Only a words can't be public subs, and that is one of them. To my knowledge it is just pizzagate, antizionism(the two are related quite closely via the podesta link...) and fatpeoplehate.(which i think is a legitimate ban). But just those 3.

We can talk about the windows 10 fiasco without implicating all jewish people, although the zionists will accuse us in every case of doing so becaue they are totalitarian fanatics motivated by an aggressive categorical imperative that rivals the actual 3rd reich in its fanaticism and cultishness, and so they will tell any lie, or murder anybody, to achieve their goals. It is a real cabal, with real kabbalists, or some other cult that we can't really ever see, this stuff tends to recede deeper and deeper into bullshit until things like epstein happen.

I try to walk this line, because it is true that when you have a cathedral of software like windows has always been, the pope can always just move to another country and with the switch of a button your entire trust framework is subverted. This is the big problem with the cloud, and I find it difficult to believe based upon the rapidity that they moved the hq to unit 8200 that this was the plan all along. The zionist factions of jewish people are rich beyond belief and obsessed with power, and seem to have no morality whatsoever, which isn't reaslly judaism in my estimation.

I meme about this extensively at https://jmichaelhudson.net/anti-zionism/ [jmichaelhudson.net]

But if you really want to oppose this without resorting to degenerate racism that will just discredit you(and the stephen miller thing shows that this is what they actually want because it divides anti-zionist opposition while scaring the non-zionist jewish people into being zionists), you can share some of these memes which I made for exactly this purpose out of my own, somewhat more refined, rage:

https://archive.ph/J9bvh [archive.ph] also this is part of the zionist manipulation, like stephen miller suddenly becomes not jewish when he writes breitbart
https://archive.ph/m5UVu [archive.ph] imagine any other comparison, this illustrates the doublethink of the situation nicely
https://archive.is/7V82Z [archive.is] this is what israel is really afraid of, that we recognize that they are at the center of our problems on the entire planet because they want to be exceptions to everything
https://archive.is/ouvhg [archive.is] tell everyone about the yinnom plan, that is what they really don't want.
https://archive.is/NZFSt [archive.is] as soon as netanyahu was in real trouble, he himself accused his opponents of a jewish conspiracy
      https://archive.is/prt0J [archive.is]
      https://archive.is/VCtvi [archive.is]
https://archive.is/HYj6b [archive.is] that there are jewish conspiracies is fact, just like there are russian and chinese conspiracies
https://archive.is/ET5w1 [archive.is] epstein is their weakpoint never let them forget what their zionist project resulted in, they are pedos and pedo enablers, and they have doubled down on that strategy every day since august
https://archive.is/TmRS6 [archive.is] these two are scary and should scare you
      https://archive.is/Eu1Z4 [archive.is]

Your position is the one the zionists behind what you don't like welcome and are encouraging, if you ac are not in fact one of them, here to incite and try to troll people like me into some bandwagon hatin.

We can oppose unit 8200 taking over the microsoft cloud without simple-minded outdated hatred of a lot of people who aren't involved, and then we can politely ask jewish people what they think about this and see what they say, are they part of it or not? I get few opportunities to ask this, but someone should try on teevee sometime and see how quick they cut to commercial.

And that is the question they do not want asked anywhere, they would much rather see a bunch of natsoc ranting about brainpans etc etc.

If you have an enemy, don't use the strat they want you to, make a new one, make your own. And make it funny. Make it so obvious with your memes that they can only ignore you.

      It is the new way.

      https://archive.is/k2P1U [archive.is]

p.s. fwiw ethos capital is also tied to Thrive, which owns patreon, and is owned by jewish people, and is part of the hillary wing of the democratic party that cheated bernie and gave us trump, https://archive.is/YxuED, [archive.is] so it is not just microsoft either. If the U.S. Army operates the root dns, and the U.S. Army cloud is in Israel, run by 8200, and .org is outright admin'd by the same people, you can see their plans obviously.

And so we are making other plans, and warn people, because they are very definitely being sold out to a foreign power, which is treasonous and outright illegal under the same laws snowden and manning are prosecuted under.

I hope this helps. But I sure wish the u.s. military and nato would stop being such stooges and sellouts, or at least give the rest of us a cut ffs. "Conquered?" It may have the majority, but as the extreme level of people dragging their feet and refusing to "upgrade" from Windows 7 to Windows 10 should show that the only reason it managed to do so was because they rammed it down the throat of the public, usually using tactics reminiscent of ransomware and trojans to trick or force Win 7 users to install Win 10, often without their real consent or awareness until it was too late. I still remember the stories of people who got up and saw that they had been surprise-upgraded overnight, and as they needed to work they couldn't afford the downtime to uninstall the upgrade, not that OS's handle uninstallation very well. Or the users who didn't even know how to do so, and so they ended up stuck with the "new and improved" Windows.

At this point in the Windows 7 life cycle it was pretty well praised and loved. Windows 10 seems to just keep getting hatred and ire. Speaking from userland, I kinda like systemd. (But I use a non-systemd distro, tho not for that reason.)

BUT... Win10 was what drove me to a massive trawl through linux distros, until I found one I could live with for everyday (PCLinuxOS with KDE, if you're wondering). Because Win10 makes my eyes bleed and my teeth itch. I don't like Win7 (I'm an XP kind of guy) but Win10 makes it look marvelous. Hell, Win10 makes Win8 look marvelous.

So tho I've got a couple Win10 installs on scratch machines (I also have a hackintosh, despite that I loathe MacOS)... it will never be my everyday OS, if only because I hate using it. It's ugly and I'm constantly having to hunt for what used to be obvious functions. It continually annoys me. Now, give me an XP desktop to run atop the possibly excellent Win10 guts? I'd be good with that. I can block the telemetry and other snoopy crap. I can't make Win10's desktop be beautiful or pleasant.

...CUPS provide most of the major drivers and you can list the available drivers by command,

        # lpinfo -m

Under RHEL5, all the PPDs (PostScript Printer Description) are stored at following location,

        # /usr/share/cups/model

But if you have your own PPD file then you can gzip the file and put it under,

        # /usr/share/cups/model

Make sure to restart the CUPS daemon,

        # service cups restart

        Now use below command,

        # lpadmin -p {printer name} -E -v socket://{printer ip address} -P {filename}.ppd.gz

Windows 10, the operating system that Microsoft officially launched in mid-2015, became the number one desktop platform in 2020 after it managed to overtake its predecessor Windows 7.

They say that as if it is a good thing. It is NOT.

Compared to Windows 10, Windows 7 was a nice, stable, sensible operating system. (Which says more about Windows 10.) That will be gone soon.

the market share of Windows 7 is very likely to continue going down,

No shit. Where can I buy more copies of Windows 7? A new machine with Windows 7 pre-installed? Will the unopened copy of Windows 7 that I have even still activate?

Of course Windows 10 is going up. It is on every new machine sold, regardless if you want it or not. Once Win 7 support ends, just watch all those third party application programs pack up their bags and give you the bird because Statya said "jump".

I'm just waiting for the onslaught of talking Muppet heads bitching about how "insecure" Win 7 is after the last update, despite the fact that most any security flaws found HAVE BEEN IN YOUR FUCKING OS THIS ENTIRE TIME.

Also typically lost in the OMG SUPPORT ENDS WE'RE GONNA DIE argument... is how the bad guys find those flaws in the first place. After all they don't have Windows source code, and they're not coding geniuses. So how do they figure out what to attack?

A: by reverse-engineering the patches. Diff update vs original, and there's your attack vector. And there will always be enough PCs not yet updated to be worth the trouble.

But no more patches means no more obvious signposts that show the bad guys exactly where to attack. And yeah, you can automate network attacks, but otherwise, how do you plan to find the holes in half a billion lines of code?

Consider: when did you last hear of a new vulnerability for WinXP (or better yet, Win98) that isn't =also= in later Windows?? D'ya really think Microsoft would pass up an opportunity to scare the laggards into 'upgrading'??

Migrating email and bookmarks depends a lot on how you're managing them. If you use GMail, Hotmail, Yahoo mail, or dozens of other web email services then the switch is automatic. I have accounts for GMail, Hotmail, Yahoo mail, and my ISP (Comcast) and they all work fine with Firefox or Chrome browser on Linux. Likewise Firefox and Chrome offer features for copying bookmarks between machines. I think it's called Firefox Sync for Firefox, I forget what it's called for Chrome.

But if you have all of your email in Outlook on the desktop, or Mozilla Thunderbird or similar then migrating is more complicated.

      Good luck either way.

As the other AC says, it varies from basically done-on-first-boot (web-based) to hard (outlook to anything).
Mail mostly has solutions out there. Browser bookmarks used to have export and import options, but they have been trying to obfuscate them lately.
You need to be a lot more specific about what you are migrating from and to. Then there are plenty of guides out there that will show you how.

If you liked XP/NT/2000 then I would recommend a distro with KDE. You get all the configurability options. If you are a Mac guy then something with Gnome where they make all the choices for you. It doesn't really matter as you will end up pulling in most of the libraries from both when you start installing all the free software.

As much as I dislike it systemd shouldn't really concern an end-user and all the easy distros have it now. Standard recommendation is pick out a distro and boot a live CD/DVD/USB to try it out. While PClinux was recommended above, I would say try Manjaro. It is the spiritual descendant of Mandrake, which I consider one of the best distros ever.

Win10 pushed me that way too. As I say above I can block or kill off all the BS. I can't make it pleasant to use. Maybe someone will create a NewXP shell for it. Until that day, I'll continue to run XP or 7 (and one 8.1 Enterprise cuz that's how the laptop came -- Enterprise is inexplicably much nicer than consumer) and if I need a modern OS, linux. Because Win10's desktop is a constant irritation, and there's no getting away from it, because it affects programs that rely on the OS for their window appearance.
