Open Access to ACM[*] Digital Library During Coronavirus Pandemic:

ACM Members:

[...] We believe that ACM can help support research, discovery and learning during this time of crisis by opening the ACM Digital Library to all. For the next three months, there will be no fees assessed for accessing or downloading work published by ACM. We hope this will help researchers, practitioners and students maintain access to our publications as well as increasing visibility and awareness of ACM's journals, proceedings and magazines. Please be sure to inform your colleagues that the ACM DL is now open, and will continue that way through June 30, 2020.

[*] ACM is the Association for Computing Machinery

[...] a US-based international learned society for computing. It was founded in 1947, and is the world's largest scientific and educational computing society. The ACM is a non-profit professional membership group, claiming nearly 100,000 student and professional members as of 2019. Its headquarters are in New York City.

The ACM is an umbrella organization for academic and scholarly interests in computer science. Its motto is "Advancing Computing as a Science & Profession".

I really wish IEEE would do this. There are some standards I wish I could get my hands on, but can't afford to buy myself.

I wish Amazon would do this. There are some computer parts I need for working from home in my rent free apartment (thanks landlord!) but they are too expensive,

I really wish Soylent News would do this. There are some amusing comments I would like to read, but I cannot afford to pay the price Anonymous Coward wants me to pay to read them.

Given how they reacted to the Internet Archive simply suspending wait lists but leaving DRM systems intact, I can just imagine the reaction of some authors and organizations to this travesty of making content open access. Will we see these?

"The Authors Guild, a leading authors' organization, wrote Friday that it was "appalled" by the ACM's move. "We are shocked that the ACM would use the COVID-19 epidemic as an excuse to push copyright law further out to the edges, and in doing so, harm authors, many of whom are already struggling," the group wrote."

James Gleick may tweet: "If you are hearing about a so-called “ACM Digital Library” please be aware it is no such thing. It is a tarted-up piracy site."

Unlikely. A general condition of publishing to anything that ends up on ACM is that you give up copyright ownership of that work. The authors don't receive any payment for viewership, so I doubt anyone cares that their articles are available online for free.
