So, COVID-19 (coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, whatever you call it) sucks a bit for your health but it turns out it sucks a lot for the economy. So we're extending any subscriptions that were going to expire before then out to June first (this may be extended a time or two depending on how well our savings hold up). Yeah, we know we're an extremely small cap entity and that's not going to make a whole lot of difference but it's something we felt we should do anyway for a couple reasons.

First, we as a corporation do not have paid employees. The only people we give money to are our hosts, our registrar, our CPA, and the revenooers. Which we're going to have to continue doing regardless and which we can currently afford to do for a month or two without dire risk of having to make infrastructure cutbacks. Putting money into us during this nonsense doesn't help much in directly putting food on someone's table or keeping jobs from going poof, so we'd prefer you guys put anything you were going to send us to work where it will help at least a tiny bit in keeping the businesses that your neighbors work at afloat. Which is to say, spend it locally.

Second, we're quite fond of the folks who've chosen to financially support the site and we don't want them to get dinged because of something that wasn't remotely their fault.

Now we're not shutting down the site's subscription functionality. If you feel a desire to contribute anyway, we're happy to oblige and we're not going to tell you that you can't. We're not the bosses of your wallets and it would mean extra work for me when I don't really have time to do much of anything code/admin-wise.

Also, we're only doing this automatically for current and new subscribers; we don't want to hit people who weren't interested with an unsolicited email about subscription expiration when we have to shut the extensions down. They may have quit subscribing or even frequenting the site and it's annoying as all get out to keep getting emails from sites you stopped doing business with on purpose. We're happy to handle it manually, though, if your subscription ended any time since the first of the year. Just drop a comment to this journal entry (NOT to THIS story!) and I'll take care of it as often as I have time (at least once a day).

That's all. We now return you to your regularly scheduled mix of discussion, debate, yelling at each other, and trolling.

(Oh, and you can still submit stories, too! Hint hint! --martyb)

Site Potpourri for Mother's Day [Updated] 19 comments

First off, on behalf of myself and the staff here at SoylentNews, here's wishing all the Moms out there a Happy Mother's Day! (For all mine did for me, I think it should last at least a month!) [Update: apparently this is for the USA; other countries have other dates. The sentiment, however, remains the same!)

Also, I hereby express the best possible wishes for our entire community as we try to navigate a path through the COVID-19 pandemic. Take the precautions you deem necessary to protect yourself, your loved ones, and all you meet. Please be careful out there!

Should you, or someone you know, be suffering at this time — be it from COVID-19 or any other reason — I can attest to the support I received from the community when I had a health-related situation last fall. You guys (and gals!) are the best!

Folding@Home: Our Folding@Home (F@H) team keeps chugging along! Historically, the F@H effort had been geared towards understanding Parkinson's Disease, Huntington's disease, cancer and the like. People donate their unused processing power (CPUs and and video cards) to perform simulations of how proteins fold. This, in turn, helps locate a way to interfere with the progression of a disease. For the past few months, the focus has shifted to the SARS-CoV-2 virus. In concert with that, there has been a huge increase in hardware donated to the cause. So, though our team rank has recently been slipping in the overall standings, I'm happy to report it's from the huge outpouring of support from around the world being brought to the cause.

Top place on our team is held by cmn3280 with just over 300 million points. Next we have LTKKane who just passed 222 million points. And not to be outdone, Runaway1956 has been running hard and is on the cusp of reaching 200 million points (and adding about 1.5 million points per day!) Pop into the #folding channel on IRC (Internet Relay Chat) or reply to this story if you'd like to join our team!

What if opt-in advertising was offered? Not a lot of people would take you up on it, but any advertising/sponsorship would add at least *something* to the kitty. You could offer survey space too.

This was discussed at length early on in the site's history. It was ultimately rejected.

Revenue from such sources could lay us open to questions of independence in our reporting. "He who pays the piper calls the tunes." No matter how much the editorial staff attempted to distance itself from any such pressure — even if none were exerted — there would be a question of independence. Having no outside funding removes that as a question. Also, we have a technically-oriented audience, so the thinking was the majority of our community already ran ad-blockers. Any advertising we accepted would likely not even be displayed. As I understand it, ad rates are based on clicks per thousand (or million?). We would have such a low click-through that any income would be vanishingly small. Further, to support any ad network would likely require enabling Javascript ads. We have heard a large and vocal "don't do that" from the community in the past. Well, what about self-hosting static ad content? That raises issues of who will do the marketing, billing, implementation, and support of said advertising/sponsorship? Given the minuscule potential revenue, those extra efforts could be better spent on coding and implementing improvements to the site as well as on processing story submissions.

still further, we cannot ignore the reality that there is currently a pandemic upon us. Many companies have closed down, reduced staffing, and generally speaking there are far fewer ads available. Those that remain are being aimed at those sites which provide user analytics and much larger audiences than anything that SoylentNews could offer. Why deal with a small site for a few thousand ads when one could deal with, say, Google or Facebook or the like and handle millions of ads with just a few contacts? How would we even make contact with those wanting to sell ads and make the case for advertising on our site? Especially in light of the competition posed by long-standing relationships many advertisers have with other sites. We would not be worth the bother. Besides, analytics has been roundly dismissed as a possibility by members of staff and of the community.

FWIW, I personally strongly dislike advertising. If I want to now about some product, I can do a search, find out what companies have what I am looking for, and read the reviews to help make a decision. The one exception is I do like to watch the Super Bowl(TM) for the ads (some are quite humorous and are occasionally the source of memes that linger for years "Nothing but net", "Like herding cats", and others along those lines. That said, I cannot bring to mind a single ad I saw from last year's game.).

Because so little potential income is at stake at the moment and the fact that the majority of our community have expressed a strong dislike of advertising, I do not see it worthy of further investigation for the foreseeable future.

I appreciate your thinking of trying to find an additional source of funding, but ads and/or sponsorship are not a good match for our site.

What I meant (less seriously than this discussion probably is) was: not that many ACs were collaborating, but they all have the name "Anonymous Coward" and we don't know which AC is which, how many of them there are, who's posting what, etc. Sometimes they flamewar among themselves, and for all we know, it's just 1 person wasting the rest of our time. Or 2, or 3, or...

I didn't see it as dissonance because most people have some kind of idea of how they want things, laws, societal rules, and they want them enforced. Just not by TMB. Well, maybe TMB can be the enforcer, and others could make the decisions, like in the legal system where you have judges, and jailers.

The dissonance comes in ignoring who will be enforcing those things. I can't help but notice that a lot of the rule enforcers are people with radically different belief systems than myself and often have deep moral failings or engaged conflicts of interest. My view is that if you aren't planning how to constrain people with interests and ideologies hostile to your own when they are enforcing the rules you want enforced, then you're doing it wrong.

I think that's a large part of the current hubbub surrounding Trump. There's a bunch of delusional authoritarians who want all kinds of rules for society, just not enforced by that guy. So rather than reviewing their basic axioms that helped lead to all this convenient, abusable rule creation, they're treating this as some affront to reality that will correct itself shortly and never happen again. My view is that it'll happen again and again and again - there will be more Trumps, more Obamas, more Clintons, more Bushes.

Have a look at this https://www.electronicsforu.com/electronics-projects/arduino-controlled-automatic-battery-charger, [electronicsforu.com] it's arduino based but it should be easy to port the design to the ESP8266. The key thing to consider when charging lead batteries is gassing voltage, so don't exceed 14.2V when charging a standard 6 cells car battery. Also make sure that the battery is properly watered before charging it. The number come from memory and I validated them there https://www.powerstream.com/SLA.htm [powerstream.com] .

Don't think it needs a whole Arduino, but I would like a solar charger for my car that has a regulator to avoid overcharging. It should include a temp sensor, since the correct float voltage for lead acid changes with temperature. That car sits a lot and like many newer cars will run it's own battery down in a couple of weeks.

Because it's often cloudy here, I think I need a larger panel, so it will work when we're socked in, but then risk the overcharge on sunny days.

        - ACs are already exempt from the "modbombing" rule. Make them exempt from the "don't use Spam mod on these people unless it's literally an ad for viagra or somesuch" rule too. SOUNDS excessive, but it's a way of keeping the bottom-feeding lazy assholes out. Spam hits the originating ipid with a tremendous negative penalty. In effect, this is saying "if you wanna troll that bad, register." Like a lock on the door, it will keep out the stupid, lazy, and weak.

        - More mod points, say 15 or 20, for longtime users.

          1) The spam mod encompasses quite a few other problematic posts beyond what you're describing. Why does it need to apply differently to ACs than others? That makes no sense.

          2) The purpose of the moderation system is to people can choose not to read bad posts without more heavy-handed measures like bans. You have the ability to set a troll modifier in your viewing settings so that you don't see troll comments. It's up to you to use it.

          3) As demonstrated on Slashdot, people can and will create large numbers of troll accounts when it is the path of least resistance to trolling. You're not solving the problem.

          4) Why do users need more mod points? It seems there are already a lot of mod points given out. The same effect could be achieved by a greater number of users moderating, plus it avoids the issue of a single user using moderation to promote an agenda.

          5) Slashdot editors have unlimited mod points. Unless the code has changed to prevent this, the same should be true here. It's simple enough for editors to clear out the obvious garbage while allowing ordinary users to moderate the rest. And moderation is really supposed to be more about promoting good comments than suppressing bad comments. But editors could mod the truly bad posts to -1, which would avoid the need to give more mod points to ordinary users.

Slashdot editors have unlimited mod points.

Nope, I get exactly the same number of mod points than any other member of our community. And that is exactly how it should be.

It is true that a site admin can take even further measures than simple moderation, but they do not usually do so in isolation. There is considerable discussion about such things behind the scenes to prevent any one person from deciding the path the site will take. If necessary, in the rare event that we cannot agree on something, the responsibility for the final decision is passed up the tree until it gets to the Board.

The Board contains names that many of you who joined after, say, 2016 might not recognise. They have been here since the very early days and they have the (unenviable IMHO) of managing all the legal and financial matters that a site such as ours must comply with simply to exist.

You can see that I'm the same AC, but anyone without admin privileges can't so I'm saying that.

For those who might not remember, editor moderation was quite controversial over on Slashdot. A massive amount of editor mod points were spent to mod down the first Slashdot troll post investigation [slashdot.org] and all replies to it. Anyone who modded this up or one of the comments in the thread had moderation privileges revoked. If extra measures were taken to make sure APK gets the spam mod he deserves, people other than APK probably won't complain. If there's any suspicious moderation of political posts on either side of the political spectrum, that will cause a big problem. I never said this was a good solution, just another alternative that has precedent on Slashdot.

I'd actually prefer to see more users participate and the number of mod points reduced to five at any particular time. That would reduce the influence of any particular user, but would probably require more user participation to work. But I also don't think the system is particularly broken. As I noted, there are plenty of ways that Azuma Hazuki can avoid seeing low quality anonymous posts. Like I said, perhaps you could create a modifier for unmoderated posts, or perhaps split it as a modifier for anonymous and a modifier for logged-in posts. It might add a bit more flexibility to avoid seeing troll comments and I suspect it should be fairly easy to implement, though I'm not familiar with Slashcode. But my comment should be taken as a whole to mean that I think Azuma's concerns are unfounded and change isn't needed.

If more people used the spam mod on APK's spam instead of something like troll, it would get rid of his spam faster. Perhaps Azuma's issues are actually with her fellow users not using the spam mod when it's appropriate.

There was a discussion over on IRC regarding this very point. If anyone thinks that a post is genuinely spam then they should moderate it appropriately. If we feel that the moderation is inappropriate we can rectify it, and if anyone tries to abuse the moderation process then they will suffer the publicised administrative action. But, more importantly, we encourage everyone to protect the site so that the vast majority of us can still express ourselves freely about the topics under discussion.

If I had to guess, people might be reluctant to use the spam mod because of this statement in the FAQ: "If you are unsure of whether a comment is spam or not, don't use the spam mod." They might also be unfamiliar with it because it's not one of the options at Slashdot. It might also be useful to explain the disagree mod. I think it's a +0 modifier, but I'm not entirely sure what it does.

Maybe if someone uses the spam mod in good faith, genuinely believing the comment was spam, and the mod is overturned, it could be handled differently from actual abuse. If the user calmly emails the admins to explain why they believe the comment was spam, if it's a good faith difference in the interpretation of the guidelines, the one month penalty could be lifted. Obviously if this happens several times with a user, it's abuse. But if it happens once or twice and they discuss it in a civil manner with the admins, perhaps there could be a judgment call to lift the penalty.

Another option might be to allow users to hide all comments that are modded spam, even if they're browsing at -1. Spam mods are reviewed by the admins, so they'll get reversed if they're applied incorrectly. But it would be helpful if moderators read at -1 to reverse other incorrect moderations that don't get reviewed by the editors. That way, they can read at -1 and moderate up good comments that are at -1 while not wading through all the spam. I think a few minor tweaks like that and perhaps the comment score modifiers would be helpful. But I hope you don't actually change the moderation system. I don't think it's needed.

I don't think the system is broken as-is. These are just a couple of ideas to allow logged-in users more flexibility with how comments are displayed.

Just because someone disagrees with a statement doesn't mean that the person making the statement is trolling. People have differences of opinion in regular conversation all the time. The disagree mod is exactly what it says - but it is only useful if you then make a comment explaining why you disagree. The 0 modifier is there intentionally - the fact that someone disagrees doesn't mean the statement is incorrect, so why should it be penalised?

If that's your current policy for handling spam mods, that's good. I have no issue with that. I'm familiar with Slashdot but am less familiar with some of the tweaks that have been made here such as the spam mod. Thank you for clarifying.

I was suggesting that an explanation like that of the disagree mod might be a good addition the the FAQ. I agree with you that a disagree mod shouldn't be a -1. It should either be +0 or +1. The latter could be justified on the grounds that if the user disagrees with the comment yet finds it worthwhile enough to merit further discussion, it's a quality comment. I'm suggesting that you add it to the FAQ because if users understand it better, they're more likely to use it as you intend. A lot of the political discussions on this site would be better if people used the disagree mod to express their disagreement instead of troll or flamebait. And I think it's pretty easy to tell distinguish someone making good points that you disagree with from someone who is just trying to provoke angry responses. Actual shitposts try to be inflammatory and don't actually make an effort to defend their position.

I agree that it's up to the users who moderate to do their part to improve the site. Like I said, I think moderation works pretty well as-is and I don't think you need to adopt the tweaks that Azuma Hazuki is proposing. If you decide that something needs to change, I've made a few suggestions that could be considered but stop short of actually changing the moderation system. These are only suggestions. Do with them as you wish. I have no problem if you adopt them or choose not to.

Ethanol-fueled is a troll. However, I fail to see why it's necessary to further restrict his ability to post. If you don't think the troll mod has enough of an effect, you're more than capable of setting a -6 modifier for posts modded troll so you can avoid seeing them. You also have the ability to add Ethanol-fueled as a foe and set a -6 modifier for foes. If you don't want to see his posts, you are more than capable of ensuring you never see them. Why is it necessary to further impede his ability to post? I don't agree with his views but I also don't like censorship. Ethanol-fueled has a fairly low volume of posts and doesn't repost the same comment in an article when he gets modded down. It's not like he's straining the moderation system to deal with his trolling. He's not following around individual users and harassing them, just posting some troll comments while mixing in some genuinely worthwhile comments.

I do wish that more users would use the spam mod on APK's comments. But Ethanol-fueled is quite benign compared to APK. Absolutely nobody is forcing you to read Ethanol-fueled's comments and you are more than capable of making sure you never see a single comment from him. Shouldn't that be enough?

          - ACs are already exempt from the "modbombing" rule. Make them exempt from the "don't use Spam mod on these people unless it's literally an ad for viagra or somesuch" rule too. SOUNDS excessive, but it's a way of keeping the bottom-feeding lazy assholes out. Spam hits the originating ipid with a tremendous negative penalty. In effect, this is saying "if you wanna troll that bad, register." Like a lock on the door, it will keep out the stupid, lazy, and weak.

While I personally would prefer people to log in (because it makes the threads much easier to read) I can also recognise that some will want to post anonymously. They already get hit with a penalty for doing so. They cannot moderate, they don't have a journal, etc. But your moderation points are for you to use however you decide. If you think somebody is spamming - moderate it appropriately. Similarly, if you believe that they are trolling, moderate them as you wish. As long as you are prepared to justify your actions when/if someone else believes that you are misusing your mod points then everything will be fine.

But if anyone abuses their moderating privs then they must also be prepared for the consequences.

More mod points, say 15 or 20, for longtime users.

How long is a 'longtime' - a month? 6 months? A year or more? Why? What happens at this magical point in time that guarantees a user's comments will all be of a high standard? You do know that Ethanol Fueled (2792), 'Buzzard (18), Runaway1956 (2926), and khallow (3766), are all a longtime users who usually post under their own usernames too, don't you? (I plucked those names 'at random' of course from recent discussions that you have had - no offence intended to any individual.) Just because you don't agree with somebody doesn't mean they are automatically trolling.

          - Make the Troll mod harsher.

The Community can already mod troll posts so that they cannot be seen - what are you suggesting we should do that is harsher? Hanging, burning at the stake, or perhaps the witches' ducking stool?

The problem is that everybody has their own idea of what is acceptable and what is not. The only fair way is to let the community decide what they want to view. We have enabled this by having moderation, a system of thresholds and the ability to remove topics from view at the individual level. I don't agree with many comments that members of our community have posted on our site - but I will defend their right to express themselves while at the same time moderating appropriately.

I had a good friend -- kind, gentle, polite, sensitive, and caring -- who was given one year to live, but finally succumbed to AIDS after something like a dozen years. I learned much from her in how she dealt with adversity and societal rejection. Would the same 'humor' apply because someone had diabetes or cancer or any other disease? I find the it to be not funny and to be in poor taste.

As for coffee++, I refer you to the story recently posted here, Beware the wrath of Abibarshim. If yoy have ever had to refactor code which used 'funny' variable names like ringo and paul and george or xyzzy plugh and plover, you might better understand why I prefer a 1:1 correspondence between semantics and syntax. We have decades old COBOL code people are still supporting. Our site code is a fork of 10+ year old slashcode. In another 10 or 20 years, should someone want to update *our* code, I suspect 'COVID-19' will be more explanatory than 'coffee++'. The "coffee++" entries were in a field in the DB that otherwise would have been left blank though, so I amused myself.

Actually, the 'email' field is directly entered by the user when subscribing. That said, I did not like the chance of a false positive using that field. Upon further reflection, I have restored the 'coffee++' values in the email field, and instead updated the 'method' field's value to 'CV-19'. Not ideal, but we're limited to what would fit in a CHAR(6). It also has the benefit of being strictly under our control — no false positives!

Good code... No, scratch that. Working as intended code is self-documenting. Which is to say, being able to understand (without comments) what's going on by reading a bit of code should be an absolute requirement for anyone to ever touch that bit of code without supervision.

I think we are basically agreeing; I like the data to be as self-documenting as possible, too. Now only need to look at the value of a single field to construct the class name. =)

Remember Uzzard's entire guiding philosophy is "whether it amuses me or not." You're dealing with a sociopath here, Marty. He'll *try* and spin it as George-Carlin-esque irreverence and a healthy freedom-lovin' good-ol'-boy disregard for censorship, but that's a wafer-thin excuse for letting his assholery fly on full display.

Just understand who and what it is you're working with, okay?
