Wine 5.7 Released With More Progress On D3D Vulkan Backend, USB Device Driver - Phoronix:
As reported a few days ago, there has been progress on the WineD3D Vulkan back-end for allowing D3D9/D3D10/D3D11 calls to go through Vulkan rather than OpenGL. It's similar aim to DXVK but not nearly as mature. The Vulkan support for WineD3D is still being brought up and isn't yet ready for end-users/gamers but progress is being made.
Another significant step forward [...] is better USB device support. The start of this USB device driver is still early but hopefully will come together for Wine 6.0 considering the heavy lifting is being done by libusb.

As long as I can use it to run a copy of VMWare Workstation for Windows [vmware.com] so I can use it to host a *real* operating system like Linux or BSD.

You do understand that WINE runs on non-Windows systems so you can run Windows software, right? As in, you are already running Linux or BSD, or others, and don't need to run a Windows VM program to access Linux or BSD.

I think he means you can install Wine on the Linux app so that you can finally run a real (proprietary) version of Linux.

You do understand that one of the very first articles I submitted which was posted on SN was the wonderful news that it was possible to run Wine under WSL. Thus enabling you to run Windows executables.
Wine's improved 3D support will be beneficial for my needs to run a fully accelerated edlin.
