Outrage mounts over report Russia offered bounties to Afghanistan militants for killing US soldiers

Outrage has greeted media reports that say American intelligence officials believe a Russian military intelligence unit offered bounties to Taliban-linked militants for killing foreign soldiers in Afghanistan, including targeting Americans.

The story first appeared in the New York Times, citing its sources as unnamed officials briefed on the matter, and followed up by the Washington Post. The reports said that the US had come to the conclusion about the operation several months ago and offered rewards for successful attacks last year.

The Times wrote: "The intelligence finding was briefed to Trump, and the White House's National Security Council discussed the problem at an interagency meeting in late March." White House officials apparently drew up several possible options to retaliate against the Kremlin, ranging from a diplomatic reprimand right through to fresh sanctions. However, the White House has so far not taken any action.

It is not clear if bounties were ever paid out for successfully killing American soldiers.

Thing is there's no need to offer bounties. There are very many Afghans willing to kill US soldiers. The Russians can supply them with weapons and ammo (similar to how the CIA supplies or even trains extremists to help mess up the Middle East further). No need to motivate them any further.

The US has done plenty to make themselves unpopular with significant numbers of Afghan people:

Yeah, this shit has all been debunked for at least a day already. You know what hasn't been, though, is Israel's looming colonialist land-grab of the West Bank. This article [jewishcurrents.org] has a few choice paragraphs:

"In a sign of the growing significance of the ongoing nationwide Black-led uprising, the memo repeatedly stresses that similarities between Israel’s techniques of occupation and institutionalized racism in the US will lead to intensified criticism of Israel...

The memo makes clear that the ADL does not want to be seen publicly as defending annexation, even as it hopes to mollify annexation’s critics...

The final page of the memo lists elected officials that ADL CEO Greenblatt should call ahead of annexation “to proactively anticipate flashpoints.” These officials include Sens. Chuck Schumer, Chris Van Hollen, Chris Murphy, and Brian Schatz, as well as Reps. Pramila Jayapal, Hakeem Jeffries, Mario Diaz Balart, Steny Hoyer, Karen Bass, Jamie Raskin, and Ted Deutch..."

No, no, look the other way, Black people! As champions of civil rights, the ADL and the Jewish community back you up 100%! Why don't you tear down a few statues and beat up a few white people and stop paying attention to Israel for a little while! Thanks for your tax dollars Goys!

For those of you old enough to remember, Russia (or was it the USSR?) carried out a protracted campaign to pacify Afghanistan, which eventually failed after about 10 years. The US (or allies) funded the Afghani resistance. It wouldn't surprise me a bit if USA black ops creeps paid a bounty for dead Russian soldiers.

Indeed. It was called Operation Cyclone by the CIA. Not sure if they offered bounties for kills but I assume that they figured that the mujahideen would do something will all the weapons (everything from conventional weapons to Stinger missiles) and cash they got that involved killing russians -- for freedom and liberty or some such reason. So it's a bit odd to cry about what the enemy might do to you when you have already previously done it to them.

Let's think for a minute. First off, what's the difference between a bounty and a contract killing? Scale. Contracts are small scale where a small number of players participate, bounties are large scale with much wider participation. So we have claims of a large scale bounty system. And this is the sort of thing that spreads, by design. And what's the most important part of a bounty system? Faith and confidence in the person offering the bounty alongside ease of contact.

So we now have a system that would be:

    1) A system that would be widespread and open to a large number of people
    2) Many people knowing and spreading knowledge of such a system
    3) Widespread knowledge of who was offering said bounty and precisely how to contact them and their standards for proof

This would not be secretive system nobody would know about. In a matter of days to weeks just about everybody in the zone, including Americans, would know about it - and it would also rapidly spread back home as well. And all of this for what? To get rid of some soldiers who are mostly replaceable and whom the media no longer even meaningfully reports deaths of? It would have 0 strategic impact, near 0 impact on morale, yet open Russia to extreme retaliation if true. So far every single party including the US, Russia, and even the Taliban are strongly rejecting the claim that any such arrangement was in place.

So in a nutshell we have:

    1) A contradiction: a system that would be widescale and, at best, an open secret somehow being a genuinely secretive program
    2) A complete lack of logical motivation and a completely broke risk:reward
    3) An absolute lack of corroboration of the report that relies exclusively on unnamed sources sited by an extremely biased and partisan media outlet.

This seems to be, almost certainly, yet more fake news being propagated by the New York Times.

If all that's true, maybe the Russians were saying "We're on your side! As proof, we're offering you many rubles to kill our 'common enemy!' See, you can trust us!" On the other hand, it would then mostly be for propaganda's sake. I seriously doubt the Russians would do something like that.

Taken together with the 'muh Russia' conspiracy theories of the past few years, it's at least cause to treat Russia news from sources that pushed the Russia conspiracy hoax with caution and some skepticism when considering any new Russia news.
AKA, what's more likely; sources of politically motivated disinformation about Russia are at it again, or they're telling the truth this time even though there is no corroboration.
As immediate action isn't required, waiting for confirmation (or refutation) makes more sense. This couldn't be kept secret for long unless the scale were small. You could at least look for second order effects that'd be visible if this were happening on a significant level, like an injection of extra money in the region.

People are so quick to forget Irrefutable [washingtonpost.com] and the NYTimes going one step further with Irrefutable and Undeniable [nytimes.com].

Those were the headlines for articles from WaPo and NYTimes describing the entirely fabricated, and mostly quite poorly so, evidence presented by Colin Powell to justify our completely misguided invasion of Iraq ostensibly in pursuit of nonexistent WMD. Those eerily similar articles were both posted on February 6th, beating the wardrums as hard as they possibly could. About 6 weeks later we would start the invasion that persists to this day, 17 years later. Our media, for whatever reason, seem to be very much in bed with the Military Industrial Complex. When they start jamming articles clearly angling for the increase of geopolitical tensions which could trend towards war - it should very much be taken with a grain of salt. And if you think people will buy into it, then at least hedge that disappointment in society with some stock investment in Raytheon/Boeing/Lockheed Martin.

They have forced Trump to hold back on building relations with Russia, even as stronger relations would be helpful to keep the balance of power with China and pacify the Middle East. Maybe a better question is who would benefit to make up a such a story?
