Psychiatry is flooded with charlatans, that much is true. But, maybe if all the frauds were banished, psychiatry might make some meaningful advances? The author does seem to be asking that scientists get back to science. Do YOU know why crazies are crazy? Wouldn't it be a good thing if we could figure that shit out, and uncrazy the crazies? And, it would be double-plus-good if we figured some of it out, WITHOUT THE USE OF PSYCHOACTIVE DRUGS THAT MAKE THE CRAZIES EVEN CRAZIER!
For instance - I've read a large number of articles that claim that virtually all of the mass shooters have been prescribed drugs for depression and similar. How true is that claim? Well - no one publishes those numbers, that I know of. I don't think anyone actually does the research into it. Real, genuine research. All I have to go on are the claims.
Someone needs to confirm, or refute, the claims. Seriously, if it were found that 68% of all mass shooters were either using, or withdrawing from, these psychoactive drugs - maybe we would decide that the drugs aren't worthwhile? But, we need hard data to come to any conclusions. NOT data supplied by the pharmaceutical companies!

IIRC, what raised the alarm was that mass killings went from around once per decade to monthly around a month after these drugs were introduced, and every investigation showed that the perpetrator had been on these drugs but quit cold turkey about three weeks before. The worst part is that the murderous phase is entirely curable if caught in time, with no chance of relapse if the problem drugs aren't taken again. There has been a concerted effort to bury the story for some time now.

It is more likely that the drugs are not the reason but the catalyst. What you have here is a drug that is supposed to help someone get out of the depression slump. How does it does that? By improving the mood and drive.
Now let's ponder what a suicidal murderer might be doing if he had some more drive.
The alternative is to have a suicidal murderer that is just not properly motivated to actually grab a gun and kill people. Sure, it is better than the alternative of a motivated suicidal murderer, but I guess the more worthwhile goal would be to figure out what made him angry enough at society that he wants to kill his fellow people. Because there's one thing that's curious about most of these murder sprees, especially the shootings happening at schools: They happen at schools. Not malls on a Black Friday or before Christmas when you could get a way higher tally.
This ain't murder sprees. These people don't just kill anyone, they pick their targets very specifically.

Well... Maybe you should read more about how antidepressants actually work. Hint: not like you think. The publicly stated withdrawal symptoms adequately explain the incidents that occur. Many commit suicide, some commit murder, most make it through relatively intact.

So much this, and if the mental health industry had the mandate and funding to provide the necessary supervision and follow-up, even just weekly scheduled contact with mandatory intervention when problems are detected, the problem could largely be eliminated. I'm a believer in food allergies causing psych problems.
When I eat dairy, I can feel my brain/emotions changing: I get angry and pissy and hard to live with.
I've heard that studies are being done looking at food allergies for schizophrenia.
I'd love to see more studies in this area.

Schizophrenia highly correlates with the various gluten digestive disorders. Similarly, idiopathic anger after eating dairy is also strongly correlated with lactose intolerance (in fact it is one of the main diagnostic signs for infants and toddlers). There are other tenuous connections to food and mood disorders. There is also conditioning that can occur and be treated with CBT. Even so, I think it is a large stretch to blame it all on food allergies like some out there would like to do.

That deserves a +50 informative mod. Seriously, as you point out, dissenting voices are smothered. Big Pharma has far too much influence in all of medicine, and psychiatry/psychology seems to be hardest hit.
I have some rather intimate experience with ADD/ADHD. Asked "How does it affect you? What do you like or don't like?" Answer was, "It just makes me mad all the time. I'm always pissed off, thinking that people are out to get me, so I want to fight." At the same time, the drug obviously robbed the boy of motivation - turning him into a passive zombie.
THAT is what kids deserve, because they are "overly active"????

Psychiatry is the easy target in the medical field. It is complex, most of the symptoms are subjective, many medical doctors don't take it seriously, many psychologists don't take it seriously, and patients/guardians want a quick fix.

This is why the anti-science movement is gaining traction. Even though most people don't understand the science itself, when there is enough fraud going on they do tend to pick up on it. People who can't tell what is good and what isn't tend to discount all of it as junk, which then allows the utter crackpots to gain a following, since they actually believe the garbage they spew.

The main reason the anti-science movement is gaining traction is the crappy school system we use to "educate" our kids. We value obedience over inquisitiveness and rote learning over understanding. We never teach kids to evaluate the veracity of what we tell them to learn and instead praise them if they gobble up unquestioningly what we put in front of them. This means they never take the detour of learning - understanding - knowing and instead use the short path of learning by heart and believing. Not blaming the kids here, because that's not only what we reward, it also requires way less expense from them in terms of time and resources.
But it means that they cannot gauge the veracity of a claim. All they can is believe it. And this plays into the hands of charlatans and con-men as soon as (not if, not even when, but as soon as, because eventually, something we taught our kids as "truth" will be debunked, simply by virtue of teachers being biased and of course not knowing everything but not being shy to pretend they do), which in turn they will use as a reason to toss everything they learned and search for new "truths". Since they only know how to believe someone and never learned to test a claim, their logic now goes "I noticed that A is false, he tells me B, B is different from A, so B must be true".

In physics, as in any science, we know what we know until we learn something that explains the things we observe better. For the longest time, we expected a planet to be inside the orbit of Mercury, simply due to how its orbit was behaving. There should have been some mass that makes it behave like it does, because without, it should not behave like it does. A planet Vulcan [wikipedia.org] was hypothezised, some claimed to have observed it but, as we do know now, of course they didnt.
Only when relativity was discovered and how it affects gravity, and how the sun's gravity well is the reason for Mercury's orbital oddities, we finally could put this to rest. For now.
Today, we observe that the universe doesn't behave like it should. It expands not as the matter that we observe would allow it to. In comes dark matter, and when that didn't suffice, dark energy. Does it exist? Or is it another Vulcan? Something that we expect because it's how we could explain what we observe within the reference frame of the model we consider "true". Maybe we will discover something in the future that suddenly explains the expansion oddities in a new way. Much like relativity did for another gravity phenomenon.
So no, physics is not "settled". We have an understanding of how it works, and for nearly all observed phenomena, it works pretty well. There are fringe cases, though, where it does not adequately explain what we observe.
But we're working on it.

Once you have discovered every law in the universe and reverse engineered all its history, and it all fits 100%, how do you demonstrate you have discovered all the discoverable? A. you can't. Therefore settled science is never absolute. For all practical purposes though, assertions like 'a brick will crush a light bulb' or "when reality differs from expectations, a leftie will declare reality wrong" are so invariable to be considered settled science.

It's worse than that. We don't sieve through the debris for diamonds. No child left behind, rings a bell? This is actually the last thing you need to get a child interested in education. Because kids ain't dumb. They are the masters at minmaxing, minimal effort for maximal gains. As soon as they notice that they can't fail, no matter how much they slack and, worse, that they don't gain anything out of trying to overachieve, and they figure that out pretty quickly, this is what they will do. They will stop trying to achieve because, well, why bother? Add the common practice of "teaching to the test" to the mix, where any question the kid might have that has nothing to do with what will be on the test gets squashed and any inquisitive bone the kid might still have gets broken, to the point where the kids eventually see that they should not ask question. What's wanted from them is to scoop up the information, barf it onto the test, after which they may as well forget everything again.
This is our school system.
If you don't give a fuck about your kids' education, don't expect them to do so.

My own experience of this was pitching some software to an academic. A friend of mine works as a researcher and was complaining some years ago that a lot of her job could be automated which would free her up to do more "science" (whatever that is). I visited her place of work and after some investigation agreed that for a modest amount of development work there would be some long term productivity gains. Mainly on processing her data.
I put together a pitch for her boss which explained how much more productive his staff would be with some simple software tools and how little they would cost him. I got almost no interest whatsoever from him. I would go so far as to say he might have been actively hostile to the idea. I apologised to my friend who was going to have to continue with her drudge work unaided and moved on to other projects.
Some months later I was talking to an older friend who used to work in academia and he explained to me why her boss was so hostile. It seems the higher up you go in academia the more your prestige, value and career is measured on is how many people work for you and how much budget you get. So a software tool that would be reduce the number of people needed and reduce the amount of money spent is actually a complete negative for an experienced academic. It doesn't flatter their ego and make them appear more important. My friend went on to tell me about a guy he used to work with who would manipulate vulnerable students in to working on completely useless projects. But projects that were carefully chosen to make his own area of research seem far more important than it really was and help him get speaking gigs at conferences.

Middle manager attach their self worth to the amount of people they get to boss around, leading to turf wars between them trying to pull departments under their rule whether that makes sense or not.

From your example I would say it sounds plausible. After all her boss doesn't care since he isn't doing any data-work/wrangling anymore, that is all done by the underlings. So however long it takes, how mundane and repetitive it is is of no importance to him. In some cases they probably believe that it's the way it should be, they had to do it eons ago and now the next generations should do it to so that they can some day in the future make their underlings do it for them. It's the circle of academic life.
Working in academia, mainly in research only, I can tell you that having lots of underlings is probably a prestige matter but it's probably also very field or subject dependent. Some fields just lend themselves to having more research- and lab-assistants and phd-students then others so it's not something that goes everywhere. There might also be big country/university differences, where I am now most professors (etc) don't have more then one phd-student each (most dont even have one, but to become a professor you more or less must have had phd-students under you) and assistants are usually shared between multiple projects and groups or only employed for limited time periods. Financing is an issue, so if you can pull multi-million-$ grants then sure you can splurge on having your own academic-posse. But it's unlikely that the university will pay you to have them around just so you'll feel important.
That said I'm not sure there is a difference here between academia and the private sector. All management or bosses are always judged on their underlings, having more is better or more prestigious etc.
But the overall name of the game is to publish papers, lots of them, and get them cited by others. Both are important criteria for your promotion up the academic ladder. So having a lot of assistants and researchers is an easy way to accomplish this, they can attach their names to your work and you can attach yours to their work. Another option is to get into weird little sub-field and start pushing out multiple papers per year on more or less the same topic -- you just update or try and apply different perspectives and such. It's a great way to get your own citation numbers up as you can then cite all your previous papers -- citation inflation.
It's all quite fucked up and far from how people outside academia believe it works, but the day of you being able to sit in your ivory tower and publish like a paper every five years or so are gone, for most people. Now it is almost like a paper-factory and publish or perish is a real thing. If you don't publish you better be one hell of a teacher that the students love, or you better be getting multi-million-$ grants all the time otherwise you are eventually going to get axed and tenure, which is over all getting more and more rare, is not in your career path.

Assistant, associate and full profs with up to a dozen PhD students. They don't have clue what the students are doing, nor care. Just write papers. It's a good way to sabotage a department whlle appearing Very Busy on the surface. The prof is not on top of the field because he's overloaded himself with babysitting ill-thought out projects come up with by untrained foreign students.
Incidentally, PhD students are a self-selected bunch with emotional imbalances that lead them to stake their entire worth on their mentor's opinion of them. It's fucked up. The mentor is fucked up too. Abused became abuser... cycle continues, the usual story.
Anyway, there are several innovative paths to upping the publication count. This is the one I am seeing a lot of lately - probably due to China funding so many spies... oops, grad students at US universities.

For making thesis about modelling I have to know where the models come from. So I started a research. Names are a bit changed, but who is in the field, knows, years are OK.
There's A's model. It has been called this way for decades and most papers show A's 1953 paper as a source of this model. I finally obtained a copy of this paper and... there is no such equation in this paper! There's an equation without dampening factor which goes nuts every time I tried to calculate it because nothing keeps the solids from flipping to the other side and develop holes with volume larger than the solid itself. The proper A's equation pops in 1984? A's paper when it has been already known, but not as A's model and without quotation.
The first occurrence of equation described in 1953 paper is in 1898 paper made somewhere in Switzerland by R., but nobody read this as most people don't read Schwabacher and it's a bit PITA to read this.
The "A's" version with dampening factor is just not there until 1961. In some Russian, Czechoslovak and Polish papers there is a version with two-factor dampening since 1960, but it does not work and has been only tested and then abandoned, quoted from P.
I found a P's Russian 1959 paper, "published" in 150 copies by rationalization department in some forgotten factory (!), specifying equation in which the dampening factor has been calculated as a difference of two contacting rigid bodies. That's the two-factor version. While scientifically totally OK, measuring needed values gives rubbish so usually a single-factor is used, yet it is not there, so it must be somewhere between 1959..1961. But where is it from?
Finally, 1960 handbook by H/B, totally Soviet with these funny "interruptions", who read Soviet science books these times knows. The last chapter, to bully reader even more. Yes, it is. Yes, dampening factors exactly like "A's". Yes, he developed it step by step from P's equation and described even machines he designed to obtain precise measurements. So much for A.
I have no idea did A read H/B. But I slowly start to call this model a "R-A-P-H".
Now, the best thing: In 2002, someone finally found that using elementary functional analysis it is possible to drag the constant out of the integral. Now this is known as a T's model. The model is computationally the same as 1960 one, but the constant is moved, which in fact is a normal thing scientists do during implementation.
Then I decided to make the model a bit better by using a numerical trick, purely in implementation (the constant has been described as two constants, to make long story short). I called it "Adapted R-A-P-H". And guess what? Someone writing paper called it "R-A-P-H-T-W" model.
Being afraid that it may be possible to run out of letters, I think the model should not be altered anymore :).
