One Mystery of Stonehenge’s Origins Has Finally Been Solved:
For more than four centuries, archaeologists and geologists have sought to determine the geographical origins of the stones used to build Stonehenge thousands of years ago. Pinning down the source of the large blocks known as sarsens that form the bulk of the monument has proved especially elusive. Now researchers have resolved the mystery: 50 of the 52 extant sarsens at Stonehenge came from the West Woods site in the English county of Wiltshire, located 25 kilometers to the north of Stonehenge. The findings were published on Wednesday in Science Advances.
[...] The team’s breakthrough came unexpectedly in 2018, when a sample core that had been drilled from one of Stonehenge’s sarsens during a 1958 restoration project was returned to England after it spent 60 years in a private collection. The researchers were granted permission to destroy part of the core for a more detailed analysis. [...] Using two types of mass spectrometry, the team determined the levels of 22 trace elements in the core and compared them with the levels in sarsen samples from 20 different sites dotting southern England. The chemical signature of the core exactly matched that of one of the sites—West Woods, which encompasses about six square kilometers.
The finding “looks to be fairly convincing and fairly conclusive,” says Joshua Pollard, an archaeologist at the University of Southampton in England, who was not involved in the new research. “It’s a major achievement.” Located just south of the River Kennet, West Woods has often been overlooked in archaeological research, he adds.

There is a lameness filter that's supposed to prevent identical comments. My experience is that at least when using "plain old text" to post a longer multi-paragraph comment, the lameness filter doesn't actually detect that the comments are identical. I suspect this is due to the addition of formatting when the comment is stored in the database, which is compared to the text that's submitted but lacks that formatting. I can't say for certain and I haven't tested this under other settings, but it's a first guess as to why the filter doesn't actually prevent identical comments. Now, it could be defeated fairly easily with slight modifications to the text, so that may not be sufficient. And I suppose that a more complex filter might be a database intensive operation that is to be avoided.
That said, heuristics to distinguish between spam and non-spam text have been around for quite a long time. Such features have been included in email clients like Mozilla/Thunderbird for over a decade. I see no reason that a filter couldn't be trained with spam comments (based on moderation) and non-spam comments (perhaps anything with a net positive moderation). Any comment where the spam mod is overturned would also be included in the non-spam category. I see no reason why this couldn't detect spam comments when the strategy has already been used quite effectively to combat spam email. Any correct that's flagged as spam by the filter is still subject to review by the admins, who could correct it and help to better train the filter.

It's amazing that the builders transported those stones over that distance. I don't know what the terrain is like between the two, but you have to be highly motivated to coordinate that kind of logistical challenge at any time, much less in that era. The inhabitants of Easter Island did similar, but at least the display sites were downhill from the quarries and could rely on gravity to help them move.

I am trying to find it but I cannot, but they moved a 1 ton replica of one of the stones on round logs about 100 feet for some tv show or school project and patted themselves on the back.
Then in the article said they could easily scale this up to the real size of the stones, 2 tons.
Then that author was hired by MIT technology review and still works there, but I cant find my links on this because its not something i particularly care about.
The stonehenge blocks are 25 tons, not 2 tons. They would crush anything wooden underneath them completely.

I have heard this story that they found the quary at least 10 times in my life I think, but never once has someone moved a 25 ton stone even 10 feet as part of an experiment, same goes for the pyramids and easter island statues.
The random giant stones scattering the pacific northwest however, I do believe that was caused by a glacial dam break that did have enough pressure to move tons of stones, but not set them in any sort of pattern.
Really, show me a 20 ton, or even 10 ton stone moved with neolithic tech, I want to see it. Or give me the funding to try and I will. Did mythbusters try this? Looking up.....I dont think so....odd?

Everything at Stonehenge, not just the Sarsen stones, are locally sourced. The same is true of every other megalithic project. There is nothing global happening with these.

That isn't actually a valid counter-argument. Culture and engineering knowledge can easily spread over large areas given time, and the ancients were a lot better connected than most people give them credit for. The Silk Road linking Europe with China, for instance, predates recorded history. That they didn't haul the stones themselves over long distances has no bearing on that.

Today, we have the ability to move massive cargoes around the world, and we do so routinely. But, we don't source the aggregate for concrete from the Phillipines, for a project in Detroit. Moscow doesn't import their aggregate from Brazil. There is a cost to transport stuff over long distances, and for the most part, we don't want to pay those costs if the desired item is available locally.
Yes, of course we have people who import marble slabs from $exotic_location. We routinely import lumber, because that lumber has unique qualities, but it's expensive. Far more likely that we import the finished product, instead, because it saves on shipping. A recent search for canes revealed that there are a lot of eucalyptus canes for sale - but I don't see lumberyards with eucalyptus in bulk.
So, even if there were a global civilization moving stuff around the world in our prehistory, we could pretty safely assume that they would use local stone, whenever possible. Only if and when they required a characteristic that was unique to some far-off locale would they bother to move 20, 50, 100, or even 1000 ton stones.

That's odd. They started growing them in the USA long enough ago to be harvesting now. Eucalyptus wood has some interesting properties, depending on the actual species. Some make excellent building timber (messmate, snow gum, blue gum, mountain ash(not actually an ash tree)). They used to use redgum for railway sleepers, it can last for fifty years half buried in wet dirt. The offcuts and scraps make the best firewood out there.

I read an article years ago - like more than 20 years ago - claiming to have "solved" this "mystery". The quarry from which these stones were taken was discovered long before that. The article that I read prior to the year 2000 indicated that the quarry had been studied, and measured, and that one of the larger stones at Stonehenge was taken from a precise spot in the quarry.
This work merely confirms what other archeologists had already figured out.
There should have been a disclaimer in the story that "We stand on the shoulders of giants."
Now, what about the blue stones? Are they moraine deposits from glaciers, as some theories suggest?
