Nobel Peace Prize: UN World Food Programme wins for efforts to combat hunger:

The 2020 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) for its efforts to combat hunger. The Norwegian Nobel Committee said the WFP had acted "as a driving force in efforts to prevent the use of hunger as a weapon of war and conflict". The prize is worth 10m Swedish krona ($1.1m; £872,600).

The winner was announced at the Norwegian Nobel Institute in Oslo. A WFP spokesman said it was a "proud moment". The WFP estimates it helps about 97 million people a year, in 88 countries.

The World Health Organization and climate activist Greta Thunberg were among the favourites for this year's award.

You talk smack but he was nominated by foreigners 3 or 4 times for the peace deals. Sounds like the committee noped out and gave the money to charity instead. When they gave it to Obama it was super ironic considering he was both part of the military industrial complex and brought about no actual peace, at home or abroad.

True, but considering how many sanctions Trump has in effect right now, I give the Nobel committee a +1 Touché for awarding based on "efforts to prevent the use of hunger as a weapon of war and conflict"

Did you read why Mr. Trump was nominated? I did, and it was eye opening.

At the top of the list: He's the first US President since Jimmy Carter to not start a war.

All presidents have made steps forward and backward. Trump's not starting any new "wars" himself are in many ways due to the other side not escalating tensions. Iran was not goaded into going hot despite the illegal blockade and sanctions by the U.S. Nor does a dove profess a desire to "bomb the shit out of" his enemy or "take out their families." Our bombing efforts in Afghanistan eclipse the old records in terms of number, size, and casualties. We burned many of our allies and then put the nail in the coffin for many future alliances by our treatment of the Kurds. We've come out on the wrong side of several coups. He greatly escalated tensions between the Israelis and their immediate neighbors. And the death toll of economic sanctions around the world is staggering, if you are to believe the numbers from the administration itself, literally "hunger used as a weapon."

Better than Greta Thunberg or the Chinese Health Organization, but isn't it supposed to go to a person? I know the peace prize isn't a real Nobel Prize and doesn't follow exactly the same rules, but there are lots of charities and things that actually deserve it.

Many times in the past it was awarded to organizations.

The Nobel Peace prize is primarily a political prize issued to whoever ticks the political boxes of the committee. Actual meaning is essentially zero - if they hadn't misappropriated the name "Nobel", no one would pay any attention to it.

Personally, I found it hilarious when they awarded it to Obama, for things that he might someday do. Then he continued and expanded the wars in the Middle East.

I didn't really start thinking about it until I heard Lehrer's comment on it: https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2000/jul/31/artsfeatures1
Kissinger was just a name from a song on a scratchy old Monty Python LP before that, but I thought if it was important enough for Lehrer to say was pivotal, it was something I should investigate. He was right.
