MediaTek leapfrogs Qualcomm as the world's largest smartphone chipset vendor thanks to huge growth in India and Latin America

In Q3 2019 the two companies held 26% (MediaTek) and 31% (Qualcomm) market share; in Q3 2020 these figures had changed to 31% for MediaTek and 29% for Qualcomm. There is a three-way tie for third position, with HiSilicon, Samsung, and Apple all snatching 12% of the share, leaving Unisoc with 4%.

The surge for MediaTek's chipsets is attributed to numerous factors: The Dimensity range has been adopted by big-name smartphone vendors like Xiaomi (Redmi), Realme, and OPPO, and the MediaTek Dimensity 1000 series SoCs have been especially praised for their performances. Also, Huawei's trade issues have helped MediaTek increase its share, and sales of affordable (US$100-US$250) smartphones featuring its chipsets have grown significantly in markets such as India and Latin America.

"MediaTek", the Walmart of SOC suppliers.

Not that there is anything wrong with that.

Except that they supply Chinese CPP outfits.

Trump doesn't know there's a difference, but thankfully it's now too late to include MediaTek in his trade war so they should be safe.

yes, but you have the reading comprehension of a chinese shill. no one said this company was in china. they did say it supplied china. which it does - both with tech and with skilled engineers. someone in taiwan can go work for a mainland company, get 5x the salary, and live like a king as long as politics or a righteous fight isn't something they care about. and they do, all the time.

but thank you for that bit of information literally any 5th grader knows. i'm guessing you literally don't have anything else to say, besides what a 5th grader would - about the same iq, about the same urge to talk, even if it's about nothing.

VW owns lamborghini and ducati, toyota owns lexus, and honda owns acura. These numbers are based on chip counts. Yes, color me surprised that there are a lot more shitty cheap mobile chips out there than more expensive ones. You know what there's even more of? whatever little processor is in my car keys and my remote control. This retard article is literally comparing the cpu in a $50 phone to an iphone, counting both as "1." Which is fine.

But then it talks about marketshare. Strange, since there is no common market for that $50 phone in india and an iphone. So a share of what market exactly is the article talking about? Ah, a market they made up for the purpose of getting clicks on the article.

Did netbooks take marketshare from datacenter Xeon sales? But muhhuh - they're both CPUs... What is it with retard journalists taking raw information, and instead of simply presenting it for an informative article, adding piles of uneducated simply wrong garbage to it? I get that in politics, but did they get fired by fox and start writing about CPUs now?

But... but... but, we have to have stories about cell phones. It's all about selling glorious toy cell phones. Our cell phone overlords demand it. Do you really think cell phone users know or care about the difference between chips and marketshare? Pfff, no, it sounds good, gets the clicks, and sells cell phones. As far as cell phone lovers know, netbooks, laptops, desktops, and crufty old servers are all obsolete, everything is done on smart phones now. Everyone must have a smart phone. All praise cell phones. Running stories like this makes our technologically impaired consumertards feel good about themselves. Now, go out and buy an expensive cell phone for yourself and a cheap one for your dog.

i think you're completely missing the fact that what you call a cell phone is now a more portable laptop, which doesn't burn my legs as I'm taking a shit while typing this up. you're confused, i know - it's a strange new world where personal computers went from backpack size, to laptop size, to netbook size, and now to handheld. it's much easier to call it only a phone and be baffled by why everyone has one. and you yes, a small cell-enabled gps collar on the dog is very useful. but we get it - you prefer to run around my street at 2am with your crying kids screaming the dogs name, only to eventually give up and get a new dog. your way is much better - i completely get why you don't understand why everyone and thing wants a cell phone. thing is, this world you're talking about? population of one.

And you are missing the point that cell phones don't have the I/O devices that I need to get things done, they can't run the software that I need, my desktop computers don't have to be thrown out and replaced every year at the whim of a service provider, manufacturer, or dead irremovable battery. I also don't want all of china tracking me and my dog. Oh, boo, hoo, a little inconvenience here and there compared to your way, but nothing that I NEED. Yet I'm supposed to be exactly like everyone else. Excuse me for being different.

So, yea, I'm the one out of a billion flies that does not want to eat shit. My way IS better, perhaps not for everyone, but it is for ME. Go eat your shit and be happy. Fuck you.

lol, if you have a sports car that must mean you don't have a truck -amirite? batteries literally in every phone are replaceable. phones are usable for 10 years easily with a custom android - the s2 just got android11 on it. if you turn off the eyecandy it's quite fast. I have a nexus6 on android10 that works great. I use phones for about 5 years. Work usually gets people a new laptop every 2 years. people who refresh their phone every couple of years choose to do the same.

you're not different, you're just stupid. not everything we do is work, not everything we do is "to get things done." half of our lives are spent reading emails and typing up this comment on the toilet. that's what a phone is for. you're clearly too dumb to understand that. you're different not because you're against phones. you're different because you have below average iq, by definition making you different.
