Bethesda, Lucasfilm tease new Indiana Jones video game:

Bethesda will be publishing a new Indiana Jones game "with an original story" in collaboration with Wolfenstein: The New Order developers Machine Games, the publisher announced today via Twitter. Todd Howard, best known for his directing work on Skyrim and Fallout 4, will serve as executive producer for the title.

Bethesda said it will be "some time" before more details are available. For the time being, the company shared a 30-second teaser video featuring the opening notes of John Williams' Raiders March and a ticking clock over a pan across a cluttered desk. The teaser culminates with an unseen hand picking up Indy's trademark hat to reveal a coiled whip.

There hasn't been a good Indy game since the old SCRUMM adventure games (Last crusade, Fate of Atlantis -- especially this one) as far as I can recall. The Temple of Doom arcade game was okay to I guess when it came out, even tho it was only three (or was it four?) levels (riding the cart, rescue the children, the temple, ???) that repeated over and over again.

The first Machinegame reinterpretation of Wolfenstein was great (New Order), the second and third (Old Blood and New Colossus) was okay but they clearly got worse the longer the restarted franchise went on and the latest (Youngblood) incarnation was just horribly abysmal.

So one can only hope that they are looking at the early reinterpretations of it all. It's not that I think they'll do a point-n-click adventure game again but for story and script they where fun and great.

But at least they have that in common -- the only good games and good Indy movies are the once where villain are the classic nazis. Temple of Doom and Crystal skull was both quite bad as far as Indy movies goes, even tho Temple was a lot better then Crystal.

A complete list of various Indiana Jones games can be found here. https://indianajones.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_Indiana_Jones_video_games [fandom.com]
I'm surprised at how many there are.

Of the ones I've played, the here are my thoughts.

Raiders of the Lost Ark - (Atari 2600) - Confusing and almost unplayable without the manual.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom arcade - Difficult and I got bored and stopped playing.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade: The Graphic Adventure - (Amiga, Macintosh, PC) - A lot of fun! The ability to play and make different choices than the movie is a plus.

Indiana Jones' Greatest Adventures - (SNES) - This game would be a lot more fun if the difficult wasn't so high. If you've played Super Star Wars games on the SNES you know how difficult this is.

Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis graphic adventure - (PC, Amiga, Macintosh, FM Towns) - One of the best Indiana Jones games. There are three major paths through the games, each with slightly different puzzle solutions. Lots of replay value. One negative is a puzzle with some stone disks that doesn't make much sense even with a walkthrough and the solution is randomly different for each playthrough. I ended up having to brute-force all the different combinations.

Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine - (PC, Nintendo 64, Gameboy Color) - This game is a lot of fun. The controls take a bit of getting used to as they are tank controls but once you get used to them, it's not too bad I originally played the game on the Nintendo 64 and while lots of fun, the Nintendo 64 version has a lot of bugs where the game would keep locking up. This got steadily worse as the game progressed. I'm not sure how it got past lot check in that state. I recently picked up the PC version from GOG and I had very few issues playing through that version. It even has controller support. Highly recommended!

Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb - (PC, PlayStation 2, Xbox, Macintosh) - Another 3D platforming Indiana Jones similar to Infernal Machine. The story wasn't as good as Infernal Machine but still worth playing. I originally played it on the Xbox and then recently pulled it off the shelf and played it on my Xbox One via backwards compatibility and it played good. My main complaint with the game is it could really use more checkpoints. Having to replay a tricky section multiple times because you die on a section after it gets old real quick. Otherwise the game is fun.

LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures - (PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, Macintosh) - I played this on the wii and found it to be quite fun. If you've played any of the lego games you know what to expect.

Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings - (Wii, Nintendo DS, PSP, PlayStation 2) - I played this on the Wii. It was fun, but short and otherwise forgettable. The wii version has Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis hidden on the disc as an unlockable.

LEGO Indiana Jones 2: The Adventure Continues - (PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii) I picked up the Wii version awhile ago and haven't gotten around to finishing it yet, but it plays just like the first.

Lego *insert movie franchise* games all play very similar. Some are better than others, but I think a lot of it depends on how much you like the movie franchise. Though, if you abhor the game style, the franchise won't make up for anything. Still, the lego games are good clean fun. Great for playing co-op with a child, because it's interesting enough for the adults, yet simple enough for the children.

I've played one with my brother, but haven't introduced my kids to them yet. (The eldest just got her first big set of actual Lego for Christmas.) Still, I've bookmarked the franchise as a set of games to play with them in the future.

The difficulty is having the hand eye coordination to actually move the characters. My kiddo started with Lego Jurassic World on my wife's Tablet. It's a much easier interface to get used to, because it all just touch screen. She's just gotten into being able to play the same game on my computer, with a controller. I also got her going on Terraria, which is mouse+keyboard based, but turned on invulnerability and turned off enemy spawning. She's starting to get the hang of it. Loves digging, exploring, finding treasure, and putting gems all around her house. I've also introduced her to GCompris, which is an educational suite of games originally created for Linux. There's a windows port of the game suite now, though. All of her cousins around the same age were very interested in the GCompris suite as well. I'm sure it'd get boring after a while, but it's a good teaching tool. I still remember learning how to type via some typing game. Touch typing is a very useful skill.

I loved the Fate of Atlantis. My daughter played it before she ever saw the films and preferred it to the motion pictures. At least one member of the team that made that game went on to be involved in film making.

The puzzle you are talking about is probably the one at the end. The pattern to use is random and is displayed in the background of the big maze you have to go through to get to the final rooms. It is not at all obvious that this is the case and there are no hints to look for it as the other patterns are all mentioned in the book you carry with you.

My wife and I walked down the aisle to that piece of music. It conjured many happy memories for the both of us, even before that day.

We listed it nondescriptly as "March (by Williams)" on the order of ceremony so as not to give the game away to the guests. Lots of smiles and laughs as they twigged which march it was!

It'll be a "mixed adventure," all right, with plenty of preachy woke bullshit and show-stopping bugs that will cause it to bomb, then Bethesda will kick all its users off the forums for "incitement," or something, for pointing out that the game sucks.

It's amazing hearing the mental gymnastics come from sportscasters and Hollywood insiders trying to explain why nobody's watching their sports or rating their new Star Wars trilogy or Capeshit. They'll dance around the problem with all kinds of bullshit explanations like "racist trolls gaming the ratings" or "people working from home" or "audience misunderstandings" while the actual consumers have been shouting loudly the whole time, "It's the woke bullshit, stupid!" People can game ratings, but people voting with their wallets is another matter entirely to try to explain away.

Turns out that consumers actually want to be distracted from the horrors that are their real lives, not paying and wasting 2-4 hours of their lives having nothing but preachy fingers being wagged in their faces for no reason and along with constant reminders of which "preferred candidate" to vote for. And many gamers, like sports fans, are all about the purity of the sport and the heat of competition, not histrionic screechy pink-haired trannies ruining things for everybody because somebody saided a bad word or depicted an in-game person of color the wrong shade of brown or some such bullshit.

That would somewhat describe the development of the Machinegames Wolfenstein franchise. As the series evolved it became somewhat more and more woke -- all white people (or at least the males) are either nazis of KKK members, BJ becomes a polish jew, the leader of the American revolution is an angry pregnant black woman taken straight out of some blaxploitation movie and in the latest version they just dumped BJ and had his two teenage daughters take over the nazi-killing business. Know you audience? I don't think woke teenage girls are the core audience of a Wolfenstein type game, but I could be wrong, so instead they somehow felt the need to score goodie points and trying to shove this story down the throat of their target audience which I gather is mostly young males or by now also probably middle-aged male.

It was interesting when they tried to look at BJ, the protagonist, from different perspectives. How broken he was as a man and a hero from decades of nazi-fighting. Several coma moments and taking shrapnel to the head. But then they just somehow went a tad to far drinking their own cool-aid. So they are currently at the stage where the heroines are woke nazi-killing feminists (all white males are bad and nazis). Not quite sure how they are going to turn that around for the next installment, I just assume there will be one. I hope the 80's or 90's nazis invent a time-machine and some kind of DNA therapy or youth serum and have BJ go back in time, after all he is by Youngblood quite old -- at least in his 70's.

I'm fairly concerned about this idea. To be clear, I think Bethesda makes great games (with maybe common glitches and exploits for those who want to take advantage of them... but it's a single-player experience so do whatever you want). I'm concerned about this announcement, though.

I picture Bethesda's expertise as making large open-world (Western) RPG sandbox games. I picture Indiana Jones as scripted, railroad storytelling, action-adventure style. I am worried this mismatch may lead to a poor end product.

Hopefully it works out well, but we shall see.
