Mafia fugitive caught after posting YouTube cooking video
A mafia fugitive has been caught in the Caribbean after appearing on YouTube cooking videos in which he hid his face but inadvertently showed his distinctive tattoos.
Marc Feren Claude Biart, 53, led a quiet life in Boca Chica, in the Dominican Republic, with the local Italian expat community considering him a "foreigner", police said in a statement on Monday.
He was betrayed by a YouTube channel in which he showed off his Italian cooking skills. The videos never showed his face, but the tattoos on his body gave him away, they said.
Biart had been on the run since 2014, when Italian prosecutors ordered his arrest for trafficking in cocaine in the Netherlands on behalf of the Cacciola clan of the 'Ndrangheta mafia.
The Washington Post adds:
It is unclear if he has retained a lawyer or if his videos are still online. He could not immediately be reached for comment by The Washington Post.
While film and TV depictions of the mafia have launched two other crime syndicates — Cosa Nostra in Sicily and Camorra in Naples — into international notoriety, the more quiet 'Ndrangheta has managed to transcend both organizations in wealth and political power.
With a vast network based on blood ties, the 'Ndrangheta's reach extends from South America to Canada and across Europe, where it reportedly controls most of the cocaine market, the Atlantic reported. A 2013 study found the group's business revenue, mostly from drug trafficking and a garbage disposal operation, amounted to 3.5 percent of Italy's GDP.

I think this could be the basis of a lawsuit.
Should YouTube have reasonably anticipated an outcome like this?
YouTube failed to take proper care in not providing a filter option which morphs people's faces into cat faces.
Even more egregiously YouTube failed to anticipate that such a filter option should be automatically applied for people who do not want to be recognized. The person making the video should not have to go to the unreasonable additional effort to anticipate that their identity might be discovered and they might be identified for crimes they are wanted for. It would cost YouTube nothing to automatically check the identity of every person appearing in any YouTube video against various databases, including but not limited to law enforcement mugshot databases, in order to protect the identity of persons appearing either knowingly or unknowingly in any YouTube video.
Beyond that, a nice additional step would be for YouTube to have the courtesy to hire a process server or private investigator or other contractor to provide an in person notification to such people, that YouTube had to conceal their identity in a video they had uploaded. And give them a warning to be more careful next time.
A few simple reasonable easy to implement measures could have prevented this.

So, to summarize, you believe that YouTube should have a legal obligation to aid the concealment of a fugitive from justice? You know, a federal crime in the US [cornell.edu]?
You have no expectation of privacy in most places where you could be filmed without your permission: If you're walking down the street or shopping in a mall, somebody can film you and it's perfectly legal for them to do so.
Also, in this case, he chose to film himself, on purpose, and it's his own damn fault he was recognized by his tattoos.
The only thing that stops a bad guy with a compiler is a good guy with a compiler.

YouTube should also send him a bag of cookies. But they already include so many cookies on a single page that maybe this is not necessary.
Tattoos should be morphed into animated tattoos of emojis.
