Microsoft outage caused by overloaded Azure DNS servers

Microsoft has revealed that Thursday's worldwide outage was caused by a code defect that allowed the Azure DNS service to become overwhelmed and not respond to DNS queries.

At approximately 5:21 PM EST on Thursday, Microsoft experienced a global outage that prevented users from accessing or signing into numerous services, including Xbox Live, Microsoft Office, SharePoint Online, Microsoft Intune, Dynamics 365, Microsoft Teams, Skype, Exchange Online, OneDrive, Yammer, Power BI, Power Apps, OneNote, Microsoft Managed Desktop, and Microsoft Streams.

The service was so wide-spread within Microsoft's infrastructure that even their Azure status page, which is used to provide outage info, was inaccessible.

Microsoft's eventually resolved the outage at approximately 6:30 PM EST, with some services taking a bit longer to function again properly. At the time, Microsoft stated that the outage was caused by a DNS issue but did not provide further information.

The article link to bleepingcomputer does not work, since the www.bleepingcomputer.com itself is currently offline.
According to CloudFlare DNS, it should be sitting on 104.20.59.209, 104.20.60.209 (balancer, probably) at CloudFlareNet, but the connection is dead.

Today early morning I noticed I can't reach https://www.keiserreport.com/ [keiserreport.com] ($/gold/BTC stuff, suddenly no DNS record at all, censored?)

    Something big is going on.

I said, do not trust Microsoft networking! It is a cobbled together mess, with no security provisions. Didn't I tell you? Why didn't you listen?

No, they didn't. 6:30 EDT, perhaps.

And yet nobody sees a problem with depending on a third party service for stuff that you should be able to do yourself.

Indeed. None of the remaining trade press ever mention either Calligra or LibreOffice even in passing. M$ and Google, and their partners, pay the advertising bills, so the press adjusts its coverage accordingly. There are a lot of situations where Calligra or LibreOffice would be a much better fit than some "cloud" based productivity suite, if the press weren't so economically beholden to GAFAM, they might actually be able to point to either Calligra or LibreOffice or both as an option for some situations.

They also never even mention the proper "Microsoft Office 2019" any more. Although I don't know how messed up it is now these days. I might just have to buy a copy of that just to find out.

I'd wager that many people aren't even aware of alternatives to M$ "cloud" office. I use, and very strongly prefer Word Perfect, and Libre Office.

I certainly agree that the press, search engines, etc., are all part of the problem.

And then you have the corporate IT / infrastructure-types who tout "official standards" and order you to use only the accepted "tools", SOP, etc. (has happened to me several times).

        Ignorance abounds!

There haven't been IT departments around, corporate or otherwise, for many, many years now. What you have in their place and using their budget are embedded microsoft sales teams on the company payroll. But semantics aside, yes, they are one of the larger parts of the overall problem. They really do their best to be difficult when it comes to softeware.

It's not even a matter of "standards". I've had those little shits just plain try to tell me that they "don't know how" to install / deploy Firefox, as one example, while at the same time the top management thinks they have been doing an outstanding job and demonstrating exemplary skill and conscientiousness.

I'm not sure what it would take to bring back IT departments, but it would certainly involve a change in or of management.
