LG TO CLOSE MOBILE PHONE BUSINESS WORLDWIDE:
Stepping Away from Phone Manufacturing and Sales Enables Company
to Focus on Growth Sectors Including EVs, IoT and B2B SolutionsSEOUL, April 5, 2021 — LG Electronics Inc. (LG) announced that it is closing its mobile business unit. The decision was approved by its board of directors earlier today.
LG's strategic decision to exit the incredibly competitive mobile phone sector will enable the company to focus resources in growth areas such as electric vehicle components, connected devices, smart homes, robotics, artificial intelligence and business-to-business solutions, as well as platforms and services.
LG will provide service support and software updates for customers of existing mobile products for a period of time which will vary by region. LG will work collaboratively with suppliers and business partners throughout the closure of the mobile phone business. Details related to employment will be determined at the local level.
Moving forward, LG will continue to leverage its mobile expertise and develop mobility-related technologies such as 6G to help further strengthen competitiveness in other business areas. Core technologies developed during the two decades of LG's mobile business operations will also be retained and applied to existing and future products.
The wind down of the mobile phone business is expected to be completed by July 31 although inventory of some existing models may still be available after that.

* TPTB want you to forget about TempleOS and the idea of "do it yourself" software, unless of course it's software THEY control! And the idea of "no networking" is peace of mind in the times of Internet of Things and everything connecting to the beast, I mean internet. Men in high and low places harassed this man and may have intentionally led to his death, in my opinion.

Why don't they jail break all their phones and/or GPL their drivers and other binary bits.

I'm amazed that they say they will continue to provide updates as they didn't provide updates even when I bought one of their flagship phones on release day (their support would just say it's up to the carrier to release updates and the carrier's support would just say LG needed to do it). But, they made it easy to unlock the bootloader and install Cyanogen/Lineage.
I would have continued to buy their phones but they went down the must copy Apple/Samsung and remove all the features.

Did you buy the phone from a carrier? Because that's a great way to never get updates.
If LG themselves were never updating their phones, especially the flagships, then I think I can see why they weren't terribly successful.

LG G5 has good specs, runs Lineage, and has an easily replaceable battery. (Though the bootloader came locked and they had a website to get the unlock codes; I don't know if that website is still available.)

I had an LG phone, long before smart phones were a thing. It was a flip phone. An incredible piece of junk. LG offered no help. Neither did the carrier. I avowed to their support team that I would never buy another LG product of any kind again. I have kept that promise for eighteen years. A pox on them.

let's be honest: if it's not a iPhone they all run the same chips and same OS and they're all "in it together" to fleece the buyer and they all happily, drolling and gleefully embrace the "obsolete by design" philosophy.
you wanna read something funny? my samsung note2 (two) still charges full battery and hold charge (original battery), still makes decent photos, can still listen to gps signals and even plays 1080p x264 movies in kodi! WAAAAATTTT?
you know why it's not running android X (10)? because the clubbermint hates you and rather makes laws to keep you from reverse engineering and unofficially fixing stuff then dropping the hammer on chip(set) manufacturers ... 'cause with kackculm driver update even a samsung note2 would run android X.
