Study shows a third of COVID survivors suffer neurological or mental disorders :

One in three COVID-19 survivors in a study of more than 230,000 mostly American patients were diagnosed with a brain or psychiatric disorder within six months, suggesting the pandemic could lead to a wave of mental and neurological problems, scientists said.

Researchers who conducted the analysis said it was not clear how the virus was linked to psychiatric conditions such as anxiety and depression, but that these were the most common diagnoses among the 14 disorders they looked at.

[...] The new findings, published in the Lancet Psychiatry journal, analysed health records of 236,379 COVID-19 patients, mostly from the United States, and found 34 per cent had been diagnosed with neurological or psychiatric illnesses within six months.

The Lancet article includes this disclaimer:

Big-data studies of this kind have intrinsic limitations, even when drawing on 81 million people, 236 379 of whom had COVID-19. In this pandemic context, not all individuals who are infected with SARS-CoV-2 (particularly those with mild or asymptomatic illness) will be diagnosed, which could result in some contamination of the comparison groups.

The question: will severe, enduring, and less common conditions such as psychoses behave more like neurological disorders or common mental disorders? Among the COVID-19 cohort in this study, a first diagnosis of a psychotic disorder was substantially more common in patients hospitalised with COVID-19.

Lungs, hearts and brains..

Experts Warn Coronavirus May Cause 'Wave' of Neurological Conditions Including Parkinson's Disease 116 comments

Experts warn coronavirus may cause 'wave' of neurological conditions including Parkinson's disease - ABC News:

COVID-19 can cause worrying neurological symptoms like a loss of smell and taste, but Australian scientists are warning the damage the virus causes to the brain may also lead to more serious conditions such as Parkinson's disease.

[...] It has happened before.

Five years after the Spanish flu pandemic in the early 1900s, there was up to a three-fold increase in the incidence of Parkinson's disease.

Kevin Barnham from the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health said he believed a similar "silent wave" of neurological illness would follow this pandemic.

"Parkinson's disease is a complex illness, but one of the causes is inflammation, and the virus helps to drive that inflammation," he said.

"Once the inflammation gets into the brain, it starts a cascade of events which can ultimately lead to Parkinson's disease.

Researchers outlined their concerns in a study published today in the Journal of Parkinson's Disease.

You bring up something I had not considered.

The very fact that Trump has a band of people who wrestle in the mud on a daily basis defending everything he does is quite interesting.

Trump is out of office. Gone. President-reject. Not in power. Not relevant.

            Yet his supporters . . .
            * stormed the capitol to murder (yes that's the right word) both Mike Pence, Nancy Pelosi and possibly others, over something they have not power to change. In an act of insurrection to overthrow the majority and put the minority in power.
            * . . . based on a lie, told by the president soon to be out of power
            * after he was out of power, many predictions he would be back in power. (Most recent is Mike Lindell (My Pillow) guy predicting Trump will be back in power this August because "he has the evidence!" -- finally! And the Supreme Court will completely undo the 2020 election!)
            * they made a golden statue of Trump
            * some people were on video actually bowing down to it. (Maybe facetiously or maybe not)
            * they continue to send him money
            * continue to attend his rallies
            * defend anything critical about him -- because he can do absolutely no wrong! (Hey, I'm happy to let people point out errors, mistakes etc about any politicians I may have voted for. I voted for them for policies, not as a religious icon.)

            Which brings me to . . .

Basically Trump seems to actually be a religious icon to these people.

They might not admit it. But it is true in every observable way.

Every past politician, whether I voted for them or not, I've always had something I disagreed with them about, and even for ones I didn't vote for, sometimes had policies I agreed with them about. No such religious devotion from me.

At this point, the fact that he's not Donald Motherfucking Trump is all he would need in his favor.

I find it very revealing that your kind insist that we have the same sort of blind, tribal loyalty to our leaders as you do. This is a fundamental disconnect in how "conservatives" (read: unthinking, reactionary cryptofascists like you) deal with the world versus how people like me do. Biden is a person, nothing more, and probably about as much of a figurehead as Dubya was last decade. We don't care WHO is doing the right things, we only care THAT the right things get done. We do not work like you. We are not stupid, tribal morons who value in-group loyalty over observable reality.

Trump is indeed a religious symbol, and you and your kind are idolators to perhaps the single most pathetic, ugly, weak false God there ever was.

I'm not looking for a figurehead, but a leader. I've never watched his primetime TV shows, and I've had minimal business with Trump companies. A friend to me is someone who would be fun to have lunch with. Trump would be tough at lunch. I think of him as a bright and cunning businessman who wants desperately to win but has a sense of ethics about it (but still wants to win). Basically, I'm glad he was and is on our side. I'm unimaginably relieved that he's not on your side.

And that is your weakness: you are looking for a leader, a single charismatic focus, when the world does not and cannot work this way. The real meat of politics is grinding drudgery. The "leader" is a shiny bobblehead distraction. It is a symbol, for the symbol-minded (that's you).

One reason I still voted Democrat despite a serious dislike of Biden bordering on hatred for his past record is because I knew Biden himself wasn't actually going to do much. It's the cabinet and administration that are, arguably, more important than the president, and while I'm none too thrilled with some of his picks there either, he's making it a point NOT to surround himself with crazies, incompetents, and incompetent crazies like Trump did.

You stupid goddamn tribals are so fixated on your father-figures, your objects of worship, that you can't even understand something as simple as this, and you insist that people who vote differently from you are just like you but oppositely-polarized. Yes.

Economy - virtually anything's better than an ill-timed tax-cut with no plan to deal with the revenue shortfall. Oh and an infrastructure plan is badly needed for the USA anyway. Education - You can't be fucking serious, pleassssse tell me how you're gonna defend Betsy Devos. Security - no new insurrections since Joe took over, definitely a win there. Our generals in the Pentagon are COVID-free as well, that's a plus this year. International Relations - Joe's big on gaffes but I'm having a hard time imaging he'll salute the general of an enemy dictator or send a half-tweet that puts the Pentagon on high alert for fifteen minutes. Border - most of your border problems are fictitious, and the wall was just a pork project. Biden's already gotten very public criticism over the kids in cages (why didnt you guys ever stand up to your candidate? HE WORKED FOR YOU!) so if he neglects that you could have a point with lefties standing shoulder to shoulder with you. Race - You can't be serious, even as VP Biden's track record was already better. Debt / Inflation - too early to tell, you could have a point here down the road. Trump faced this and never gave you a serious proposal about what he was going to do about it. Lotsa time for golf and campaigning, tho. Prospects - Yep, though the Potatohead Branding was pretty touch-and-go for a while there, we barely got through that.

Medical Care - What a rather telling omission from you. Yes I *definitely* feel a lot better about that.

You actually believe a grifting wealthy (on paper) psychopath from New York City who literally shits in a golden toilet in a penthouse in Manhattan is a man of the people.

So does 40% of the US voting population. What made that possible? It sounds like a "My Fair Lady" or "Trading Places" bet run by psychologists.

What made it possible is people are goddamn stupid, that's what. It's on a bell curve, but the curve is massively right-skewed in more than one sense of the term and it's easy to manipulate stupid people. Then why did it take so long for someone to try this? Seems like it should have happened a long time ago if this is the case. Plus, the entire Republican party backed him every step of the way -- how difficult could this have been?

Because it took a decades-long campaign of propaganda to radicalize Republicans far enough along with the political maneuvering through gerrymandering and voter suppression to make the move possible.

I disagree with Azuma that it was only because people are stupid, and it was more about the blatant propaganda and lies through Fox News and rightwing pundits. Also quite a few of them chose power of ethics because they are still in the cold war mindset. Not stupid, just choosing evil because they thought it was a secret plan for the good of the country.

Might I ask of you, your own question? Should the president be doing what want? Do we elect politicians to do what we want, or do we elect politicians because we think they're the best individuals to use their personal talents and skills to direct the country in a positive fashion? This is not a rhetorical question. I'm genuinely curious what you think. This, like many things in society today, reminds me of one of my ever more favorite passages in The Republic: [mit.edu]

And democracy has her own good, of which the insatiable desire brings
            her to dissolution?

            What good?
Freedom, I replied; which, as they tell you in a democracy, is the
glory of the State --and that therefore in a democracy alone will
the freeman of nature deign to dwell.

Yes; the saying is in everybody's mouth.
I was going to observe, that the insatiable desire of this and the
neglect of other things introduces the change in democracy, which
            occasions a demand for tyranny.

            How so?
When a democracy which is thirsting for freedom has evil cupbearers
presiding over the feast, and has drunk too deeply of the strong wine
of freedom, then, unless her rulers are very amenable and give a plentiful
draught, she calls them to account and punishes them, and says that
            they are cursed oligarchs.

Yes, he replied, a very common occurrence.
Yes, I said; and loyal citizens are insultingly termed by her slaves
who hug their chains and men of naught; she would have subjects who
are like rulers, and rulers who are like subjects: these are men after
her own heart, whom she praises and honours both in private and public.
Now, in such a State, can liberty have any limit?

            Certainly not.
By degrees the anarchy finds a way into private houses, and ends by
getting among the animals and infecting them.

            How do you mean?
I mean that the father grows accustomed to descend to the level of
his sons and to fear them, and the son is on a level with his father,
he having no respect or reverence for either of his parents; and this
is his freedom, and metic is equal with the citizen and the citizen
with the metic, and the stranger is quite as good as either.

Yes, he said, that is the way.
And these are not the only evils, I said --there are several lesser
ones: In such a state of society the master fears and flatters his
scholars, and the scholars despise their masters and tutors; young
and old are all alike; and the young man is on a level with the old,
and is ready to compete with him in word or deed; and old men condescend
to the young and are full of pleasantry and gaiety; they are loth
to be thought morose and authoritative, and therefore they adopt the
            manners of the young.

Many of the changes in our society have felt so unprecedented. Yet here is a man writing words, 2400 years ago, that if written in contemporary language and reference would appear to be little more than a perfunctory recital of the changes in society over the past ~80 years. And these cannot be simply coincidences. The path described is so unnatural, so irrational, and so accurate that there indeed must be more to it.

So I suppose there is only one thing to do. Let us raise our glass to our own demise. It would seem we made poor rulers after all. Let us now exchange our crowns for whips and collars.

My remark was about blind support of a bad-acting President, not about how representative of government we have. It's a bit like a parent punishing their kid for getting suspended from school for swearing, then asking the parent if they really think swearing's all that bad. Kinda not the point.

Having said that, though, my personal opinion... if it's still interesting to you... is that it should be somewhere in-between. The Pres is privvy to stuff we're not, so he or she needs some leeway, but that's also why transparency is important. I'm still very unhappy about Obama's drone strikes, and if he was actually justified in doing so I'd never know it. Classified. But I also think approval rating matters... or should anyway. If we actually did things like recall elections then Obama's move would have been a lot riskier, and we would more likely have gotten some transparency about it.

I suppose a simpler version of what I'm saying is: We need to be more involved.

sadly, more like 70% of American's are obese. Not overweight, not fat, OBESE. I say that indicates a per-existing neurological disorder.

Americans are the most weak-minded people I have ever had the misfortune to meet. There is no padding soft enough to protect them from reality. Since 9/11 the population has been suffering a collective nervous breakdown. Their motto should change to "Out of an abundance of caution!"

Thats what USA type people have become.

In my father's era and before it was different. Those people worked very
hard and built the infrastructure of this country. Now the lazy use and abuse
what was passed down to them. Pretty sad how fast a good thing can end
        up in the toilet.

But you see, infrastructure spending is *Communism.* St. Reagan told us so, so it must be true. 40+ years of infrastructure rot sucks, yes, but let's not lose sight of when and why the country's focus shifted away from it.

Know who had some good ideas about infrastructure? A guy named Franklin Roosevelt... :)
