California breaks 1 GW energy storage milestone:

[California] regulators noted that the "peak hour of [electricity demand in] the year occurs consistently in September... within hour ending 17 (based on P.S.T. or 6:00 p.m. P.D.T.). By 2022, the peak shifts to hour ending 18."

[...] In 2020, that shortfall totaled around 6,000 MWh over three hours. In 2021, regulators added an hour and increased the amount of shortfall within each one-hour window, bringing the total shortfall to 14,400 MWh. That number expanded again in 2021 to 15,400 MWh of "missing energy" over four hours.

[...] Fortunately, 2,000 MW of energy storage capacity is coming online by August 1, per the California Public Utility Commission. Much of this capacity will have four hours of battery energy sitting behind it, nearly 8,000 MWh in total.

[...] One of the first examples of a huge charging event occurred on July 14 at 9:15 AM, and was brought to our attention by California energy data geek Joe Deely. Here's what it looked like:

[...] Two of the world's largest lithium ion batteries contributed to these capacity values, and backed up the grid during the flex event.

At 300MW / 1,200MWh, the world's largest battery storage system so far is up and running.

This comment makes no sense and I think I'm dumber for having read it.
Why? Why would they (have to) do that? If Utah, Arizona, or New Mexico wants to start taxing its ports, let them go at it...
On the other hand, those bastions of deep red retardation, Mississippi and Alabama have ports. Heck, they even have oil. Should they too forgo that taxation?

Mississippi and Alabama ports are not conducive to bleed America dry through Chinese imports. Running shipments through Panama would add considerable overhead. Their betrayal of America for the sake of Chinese interests have direct monetary gain for them. It's no wonder that so many Democrats are in the pocket of China.

To the other cowardly posters, I have no desire to strip California of its right to govern itself, I wish they would extend the same courtesy to other states.

I like throwing out the commie terms at them, i.e. privilege, in discussing their fleecing of America and the privilege they enjoy with those warm water ports so convenient to Chinese shipments.

hahaha, the battery was charged by gas and hydro mainly.
the gas, hydro and nuke bars are all solid and the same size at all times.
if cali would allow 3 GW moer solar and add a bit more pumped storage there would be some loser$ but no battety required.
anyways, this is taking to long, methinks the future will be stand-alone (off-grid sounds so st0pid, it's called a "blackout", lol) with a battery (DC) connected to a " box" (no marketing speak invented yet) that outputs a 50Hz sin wave (AC).
all normal AC appliances (and safty features) work as normal, including regular anti-islanding grid-connected solar inverters (they sense the 50Hz AC waveform from "the box").
if there is no or little load on AC, the solar grid-tie inverters raise the voltage at which point "the box" will export to the DC battery (charge battery).
if load on AC side increases or there is no sun-energy, voltage drops on AC side, and "the box" discharged the DC battery (discharge battery to raise voltage on AC side)
"the box" is a simple device that has +/- on the DC and L/N (and 50 Hz) on the AC side. so, 4 ports to connect 4 cables. that's all. no go find one, t-hehehe.

It seems too obvious. Each house has a "box" that stores 24h of electricity and a solar panel. Keep the gas turbines running 24/7 and let the "box" take over to handle peak demand.

        no you don't understand. maybe?
in the simplest (sane european standard) you have two fat wires from your electric grid meter to your main breaker, say 15A.
if you already have grid-tie solar that sometimes exports energy to the grid (and get a lousy and non-fair price for it, which the grid operator resells at full price) then you need two things, well, maybe three:
        a battery
        a "the box"
        and number three: cable cutters.
you cut AC cables from the grid meter, connect your end of the wires to the AC side of "the box".
next, connect batteries to DC side of " the box".
voila, now your country can go to war and if they bomb the hydro dam, nuke the gigabattery turbine building, some broken beer bottle.tosed carelessly out the car window (starting a fire), you will be independant, can enjoy eoectricity even if you have no job and no money to pay bills ...

Yes, that looks like the smartest thing to do. Unfortunately, some places may be completely unsuitable for box installations. Apartment buildings, for instance, may not be able to support the weight on the roofs, and they may not have any ground room for installation. Does California do rowhouses? Those may not work out so well. Most single family homes probably have a lot of options - but maybe some don't.

This is something that needs to be engineered in before construction starts.

Business customers would be a whole different ballgame. Who pays for installation, the tenant or the owner? I suppose that some businesses may run into problems with finding a place to put the box. If you lease a storefront, that gives you no right to install a box on the roof, in the alley, or even on the sidewalk.

I don't think a 'one size fits all' approach can be made to work. Make the boxes available, but don't try to mandate them for every home and every business. Make them available, and every home, every business that installs their own box will help to lighten the load on the grid during those peak hours. Keep, or even expand, that big central storage facility, and everybody should be happy.

The only reason why California hasn't experienced rolling blackouts is because Newsom's ass is on the chopping block.

It's really amazing what a serious recall threat to a governor can do to a state that only last year was experiencing rolling blackouts and rampant wilderness fires. If Newsom dodges the recall and stays in power, you bet your ass that the masks will be ordered back on, rolling blackouts will resume, and Antifa will restart their fire-starting in the rural conservative areas of California.

It might just be a generational gap thing, but that whole aspect of the plot made absolutely no sense to me. Back To the Future came out shortly before I was born, and I was in my early twenties by the time I got around to watching it. Decent movie, but I just don't get that part of the plot at all. I know now that Vulcan is a race and their home planet from star trek, and Vadar is the $Big.Bad.Guy from the original star wars trilogy, but beyond both of them being sci-fi, I don't see the connection. In fact I watched BTTF first, so watching A New Hope after that was a bit confusing.

Is it a dig at the nerds who take that shit overly-seriously? Purposely mix and matching things, just to get them worked up? In a movie that is, itself, science fiction in the same generally genre? Was that even a thing back in the dark-ages when these movies all hit the theatres?
