Welcome to November! Here's a quick update on the site.
Holiday
First off, Monday (November 1) is a National Holiday in France, which just happens to be where janrinok is located. He *just* returned today from a leave-of-absence. He still has quite a number of matters to attend to which limits his availability here. Dealing with loss takes time, so please take the time you need during this time.
In commemoration of the holiday, I am instructing the editorial staff to maintain a weekend/holiday story spacing schedule for the day.

We're probably going to cure cancer with mRNA vaccines, which had already been developed to target some cancers before covid, which is why the antivaxxer bullshit of this being new technology is an outright lie based on wilful ignorance and the media hype over this being a "new technology."

What would happen if everyone else decided to overcome their FOMO and just disabled comments on facebook, only allowing comments on their own sites, where they have the ability to ban such crap (section 230 allows for editorial control, contrry to what misinformed libertarians erroneously maintain)?
facebook would have to find another revenue model (but think of the corresponding saving of not having to pretend they actually monitor anything). Or they can die - the best outcome for its users.

They can't MAKE ENOUGH VARIANT COVERING BOOSTERS in time since there are TOO MANY VARIANTS inevitably, & yes, from the VACCINATED (walking dead), & they can't produce boosters that cover ALL possible variants!
By way of comparison - YOUR REGULAR IMMUNE SYSTEM is NOT fooled if you were to be a virus & say, put on a hat/mustache/shave your head etc. to "disguse" yourself (sort of like VARIANTS in viruses working) - it KNOWS you are YOU no matter the "thin disguise"...

IF you didn't get a SALINE placebo 1st round - some folks only get a SCIENTIFIC CONTROL ITEM placebo of saline (the lucky ones)... some do not & IF you are 1 of them? Again, you will NEED that booster...HOWEVER: IF you DID get a REAL Covid 19 vax? Not a saline placebo control item??

Time was, people would work on a project to attain a certain credibility for potential employers. That's long gone. They want to see the apps you built. Because that's what pays now.
And if you're doing it to scratch your own itch, life in gehas a tendency to cause you to put that at a lower priority than it used to. People in general are more demanding in wanting a better quality of life and less time in front of screens.
The enthusiasm to "change the world" has gone, because it HAS changed, mostly for the negative.
There was a song that started "In the year 2525 …", which had us expiring around 10,000 AD. Sounds EXTREMELY optimistic nowadays. So who can blame people for looking for more fulfilling time sinks.

I work and volunteer on a number sites in a number of roles. None of them have the problems that this one has getting donations or competent volunteers. It isn't even comparable. For some time, I have been thinking about why that is. For awhile I thought it was The Mighty Buzzard, since he has ran off at least two individuals I am personally aware of, or the fact it is in archaic perl running an out-of-date and vulnerability-laden stack leading to people not even wanting to try. But I've come to the conclusion that it is deeper than that, especially with the seeming inability to get people in other positions.
Frankly, this website looks like it is already in the death spiral. The community here is mostly seen as either nonviable or toxic at a minimum. The administrative decisions are routinely called and acknowledged as opaque. No one really seems to have a handle on operational issues. And staff involvement is uneven, even when it is visible. And most of what does happen seems to be the same coterie of trolls. The usual comebacks are usually "Why don't you volunteer then?" or "But the IRC is hoppin'" or "We've got plans/workers/whatever but that isn't reflected on the website." None of those really addresses the issues. The primary endpoint and on-boarding is the website and without it appearing healthy, good luck getting what limited effort people are willing to offer without the additional leverage from the sunk costs.

One of the best things about the group of admins that we currently have, and perhaps its greatest strength, is that we are so divers. We have a wide range of backgrounds and consequently a wide range of political views, technical approaches, temperaments, etc.. And vehement, even angry, disagreement on one topic could be accompanied by supportive, even amiable, agreement on others. In the same day. In the same hour. I've said some negative things about some of Buzz' "I propose we solve the problem this way. >click<, >click<, done!" choices, but I've been 100% behind others. The ones that worked have lived on, the ones that didn't have been replaced. That's how progress works, and it's good. And we're still progressing, even if we're short-handed presently.
