Apple’s Federighi delivers dramatic speech on dangers of sideloading:
Apple executive Craig Federighi, who is responsible for the company's iOS software for iPhones, delivered a lengthy speech intended to alarm listeners about what might happen if Apple is forced to allow users to sideload apps. The speech was given at Web Summit 2021 in Lisbon, Portugal, and it follows similar, earlier statements from Apple CEO Tim Cook.
The European Commission is actively discussing the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which is intended to regulate big tech platforms to ensure a fair playing ground. Companies like Apple could face fines of up to 10 percent of their global revenue.

Furthermore, and SN is now complicit, Apple is trying to get the media to rename installation as "sideloading". The title above could have just as well read, "Apple's Federighi Delivers Dramatic Speech on Dangers of Software Installation" rather than playing along with Apple's strategy. Apple seems to be aiming to turn public opinion against regular system activities like installing programs. By renaming installation, they are able to turn it into something suspect and, eventually, illegal.
This is nothing less than another stage in the ongoing war against general purpose computer in which Apple ratchets the restrictions down one notch tighter. Phones, cars, notebooks, radios, cameras, televisions, and any other appliance large or small has computers in it. Sadly they are running locked down, closed source software and the coming generations not only are growing up without exposure to the freedoms that older generations, short of the Greatest Generation, unfortunately took for granted. Worst of all, the younger generations don't care about rights and freedoms or when they do exhibit strong antipathy towards the very idea.
Don't play along. Call installation "installation" and not "sideloading".
Money is not free speech. Elections should not be auctions.

It's worse that that though, because "sideloading" has long been an understood term used for a specific method of installing software on a mobile device, that is; bypassing any "store" or centralised repository and installing the software on your device directly.
However, in its recent sermons criticising this legislation, Apple has been disingenuously trying to redefine "sideloading" to also include "installing from other stores than the Apple store", while at the same time claiming all the potential downsides of the original definition of "sideloading" necessarily applies equally to their extended redefinition, which is a lie.

My general assumption is that all organizations with anything resembling real power eventually get taken over by psychopaths, because psychopaths are willing to do damage to both other people and organizations they're a part of to advance their own career. An once that's happened to an organization, it's very hard to impossible to undo that, because psychopaths see non-psychopaths who've managed to become leaders as a threat to be eliminated.
Corporations are quite susceptible to psychopath takeover, because the values of a corporation (profit for shareholders and the accompanying executive compensation above all other considerations) align very well with the values of a psychopath (what's good for me personally above all other considerations), and corporations are organized with very little check on the power of higher-ups over lower echelon employees.
The only thing that stops a bad guy with a compiler is a good guy with a compiler.

Possibly veering unacceptably far offtopic, but my favorite piece of doublespeak around here is the state's "School Choice" legislation. Basically: tax dollars being given to private schools to support, sometimes 100% of, their tuition costs. It is sold as "giving parents the option to choose to send their children to private school", but in reality what it means is that these tax dollars are being given to private schools which, unlike public schools, have the right to choose which students they permit to attend. Tax dollars which are being diverted away from the public schools where the "rejects" are forced to attend.

I say: let them insulate themselves into exclusivity all they like. There are a lot of people who don't want to make decisions for themselves, it's so much easier when "those mundane things" are decided for them. As long as they don't start fencing off territory and only permitting Apple product owners entry, I think it's fine.
Now, as for the "exclusive" charger cable thing... that's just a senseless waste, generating additional pollution for no other benefit than the company's profit. I see the cable connector issue as a part of "right to repair," different from being locked in to a subset of available software, because, let's face it: every ecosystem has restrictions on available software choices.
Maybe when the software is providing basic/essential services, such as emergency communication, proof of identity, etc. those functions deserve some regulatory protection. But, if 14% of people are somehow driven to give unnecessary amounts of money to a particular company because they need to have that logo shown on their possessions for social status? I don't really care if that payment is made in up front purchase or subscription format - though I do vastly prefer the current market where we have options that are minimizing the subscription side of that equation.

The promise of the app store was to create a diverse market of safe applications for a user to choose from. The current system is much better than just downloading random s/w, but has room for improvement in diversity from Apple's after phone sale cash flow and safety from apps operating contrary to the user's interest.
The basic technology supporting this is a trusted party inspecting each app for safety, crypographically signing it, and phones able to run apps which are signed. In addition, there is a method to disable apps which were discovered to be unacceptable after they were signed, sealed, and delivered. For now, it seems sensible for Apple to be the central authority for making the phone, root signing key, and method for disabling a specific subsidiary key. If it is sensible for Apple to do this, then it should be included with the price of the phone.
Like the Model T color choices, the current system permits the user to choose who to trust as long as they choose Apple. For creating the ecosystem, this was necessary, but it is beginning to show cracks around the edges. Conflict of interest and the shear popularity of the sytem make it near impossible to properly vet that each app operates in the interest of the user. I'd like to see some other trusted partys lend their good name to the list. What if in addition to apps certified by Apple, you could also get apps inspected and certified by somebody else you know and trust. Depending on the user, names like EFF, IBM, Krebs, maybe even NSA come to mind?
The app store has gotten us far, but perhaps it is time for an adjustment.

The problem is: when the next Squid Game fad comes along, people will all run out and "trust" some random kid with a Netflix subscription in Azerbaijan who noticed the popularity of the series and manages to market some ripoff of the name as a cryptocurrency, or game, or both. All their friends are doing it, how bad could it be? Oh, this is going to be huge! I'm "all in" with this month's paycheck! There's a reason that gambling is regulated.

might be a problem for apple.
if they "vet" all apps on their store, this might just be a simple check to see if apple conform libraries are used.
so the api that ships with apple devices can be most insecure, but since only apple libs with "limited functions" can dig into the mothership, "alien" (sideloaded) api might expose alot more access to the mothership and maybe even lateral movement on the mothership.
short: walled garden and locked client-server(cloud) software api allows sloppy coding.
sideloading means apple will have to put more checks on data coming from client to the mothership.
sideloading is prolly insecure for THE MOTHERSHIP (cloud data center of apple)...

For simple bugs in the app, absolutely. The app store gives Apple a collectiong of test cases to run against the phone to make sure things stay together.
What that doesn't do is cover apps which work one way in the test lab and another way in the field. That seems the more likely mothership threat and not sure how sideloading with the ability to shutdown a misbehaving app after the fact, makes it worse?

the imaginary setup, you in total control of the desktop and the server, is what apple has now (no sideloading).
tho many people think they own their devices, which by dinoaur laws is technically correct, they don't on ..uhm ..errr... technical level. you just paid to own a "dumb terminal" (physical device) that is remote administered by apple.

Have you ever tried Linux and Steam? Steam's Linux support has improved greatly. It's set to improve even more once Steam Deck is released with some popular Anti-Cheat software support. It's worth a shot, because Apple and Windows aren't getting more customer friendly.
