Turns out that virtual meetings are more or less just like real meetings. A lot of people arrive late. Most people don't say or do anything, they are just there. The more people that are invited to the meeting the worse it apparently is. Bad meetings are bad meetings no matter if they are live or not.
For meetings with seven or more people, some of the findings include:
50% of participants arrive late
40% have below average or poor engagement
22% of participants don't say a single word
11% don't have video or audio onOverall, one in five video conference calls had a below average meeting score, and 31% of meetings start late.

Business meetings don't work because the power relationship discourage honest discussion, virtual/real is trivial/exacerbation.
I bet some jackasses would turn off the mike and jerk off to some hot colleague. :)

Sorry to hear that you aren't enjoying your meeting time. Life's too short to attend meetings like you describe.
Mine are usually great, people attend because they want to be there and everyone is pulling in the same direction to make progress on the project(s). There is always a published agenda (in advance) and the moderator works through it, with enough (but not too much) time for discussion and/or brainstorming new ideas if needed. There is rarely a hidden agenda, and jokes (of any flavor) are also very rare. Stories to illustrate a point, or pass along some past experience are common.
It's engineering. We're problem solvers, not politicians or clowns.

Something terrible has happened to what I once knew as the workplace.
I saw it as it evolved.
The ability to measure "productivity", whatever that is, fomented a lot of internal infighting as we competed against each other, not the things we needed to do, for rank.
Before the teams of MBA advisors, usually arriving in teams of four, via Lear Jet, we worked on the problems of our customer. Then "improved" leadership and tracking skills made it imperative to play the ranking game, to hell with the customer. Nice guys finish last. We have a winner here. He gets top rank. The rest of you losers try again next year. If you even get to try at all. Layoffs. You've done this before, know this didn't work, and you dare argue with someone with leadership skill? Layoff!
Learn Communication and Marketing skills. Lose 4X more weight! ( Don't mention the control group lost none!). The customers are dumb and will believe anything someone wearing a suit tells them. You can spot that type a mile away. While the tradesman and engineer are obsessed with fine tools, the leadership type are obsessed with who they know and personal grooming. They love expensive stuff but can't as much as diagnose a car problem, much less fix it.
It wasn't long after the invasion of the MBA that we (USA) dismantled our factories and outsourced nearly everything but retail sales, coffee shops, barber shops, and tax prep services .

Reading between the lines of your post, it sounds like you work for one of the big automotive OEMs, or perhaps a Tier 1 supplier? While MBA's might be the symptom, I suspect that the real problems started when the Japanese car companies moved in with better quality and lower price.

There is one different between an in-person and virtual meeting: In the virtual meeting you can sit there in your underwear with a beer open next to you and get some work done with the audio as a background buzz while with a real meeting you have to pretend to be paying attention while wasting an hour of the time you don't have to spare anyway, just in time for the next meeting to start.

Wish I could turn up to real meetings with no visual/video or audio on.
Difference I find is people working at home are in t-shirt with pyjamas bottoms or so, at the office they’re in standard office attire.
The other thing is trying to get a word in when a couple of people are back and forth with a lot to say. Easier when in person. Plus resolution in body language and facial expression.

Much higher % have video off in the engineering project meetings that I attend virtually. My video is never on, but I share my screen as needed to illustrate a point. I average about 10 hrs/week on Zoom/WebEx/Teams(yuck), etc.
With one customer, it's rare, at most one or two people turn on video in meetings with 3 to 10 attendees. Often I would like an option to hide the attendee thumbnails and have a larger window for screen viewing. With another customer (larger project team) there might be 5-6 faces and 10-15 blank screens. No one is ever pressured to turn on their camera.
All these meetings seem very productive to me, making sure the group is moving forward, and with a minimum of duplicated effort.
Some people pop in and drop out as their schedule permits (and as they are needed per the meeting agenda). It's becoming standard to put a short message on the chat "I'm leaving in 5 or 10 minutes", enough time for anyone with an issue to discuss quickly while they are still in the meeting.

I was actually more surprised over how low the "don't have video or audio on" was. By their estimate it would mean like 9 out of 10 people do have it on. Which I find surprising cause that just seems very low.
That some people don't say or do anything is normal and totally comparable to a "real" meeting. At most they will acknowledge or say something when prompted to but otherwise they just appear to be there, token-meeting-dude.

I think it means 11% have neither video nor audio. In other words they are only there for purposes of having their name show in the attendance list and are not participating at all. That seems about right. I have done it occasionally, not often.

That takes practice, not just you but the other meeting participants. Our group has semi-optional daily scrum which I attend 2-3 days a week. As a group we've gotten really good about reading break-in intent from others and letting it happen without totally disrupting the flow of the conversation. Some of the bigger meetings with "professional" moderators running them, the moderator will watch everybody's mic status and if you come off mute they call on you at the next break in the speaking.
The worst thing for me was getting used to the lag, and I think that Zoom / Teams both have variable lag which is even worse because you can't train to work with it as easily.

It would be useful if participants could mute another participant if a majority press the speaker's mute button, and not only the meeting organiser had this power. The trouble is, the people who tend to talk without listening wouldn't be sensitive to even this feedback.

Or... they would be overly sensitive and feel persecuted, censored, and like they are the butt of a collective joke - and in some cases all that would actually be true and we wouldn't want to expose those underlying sentiments too clearly. It doesn't seem (to me) like the kind of mechanism that would pass corporate review for implementation.

Virtual meeting sans video: 0 personal appearance prep time, 0 travel time, opportunity to "multi-task" without offending anyone (since they can't tell you are doing it).
Same meeting in person: shower, dress (possibly including dry-cleaning drop-off and pickup if your management plays those games), commute, prepare any required physical materials, walk to physical meeting space to arrive a couple of minutes early (unless you like the "I'm so busy I can't prioritize you" appearance), often wait for prior meeting to break up and clear the room, sit attentively without picking nose etc., accomplish little else besides maybe some idle daydreaming, then reverse the process.
Yes, the social opportunities to chit-chat before / after are _slightly_ better, but if there's a need/desire to chit-chat after a virtual meeting I often do a quick direct phone call - no e-mail trail, works almost exactly the same as walking with the person to their next destination, and you can still pick your nose while they talk.
I would say that traditional face-to-face meetings have at least 100% greater non-value-add overhead than a virtual meeting, 1000% if you are traveling by plane and staying overnight just to attend a meeting at another location. There are niche opportunities that come along with this overhead, but if you aren't making extremely good use of those niche opportunities, virtual meetings are the clear winner - even if they do replicate all the same failings during the meeting as face-to-face has and maybe add some "sorry, I was on double-mute" circus to the mix.
The worst I've done in a while is in the "monthly update" committee meetings that were so poorly run that only 20% of the participants ever spoke. So, I fell into the habit of connecting in watch / listen only mode, then out of the blue, first time in 4 months, they ask me a question and it takes me 20 seconds to get a few words typed into the chat... But... those are corporate-wide gathering meetings, the kind that managers used to travel to have monthly at central meeting locations. Now, I can flip it on at the appointed time, pay attention to the content, even stay ready to speak up with a "nothing new to report, everything on-schedule, on-track" when called on, do a little light multi-tasking during the hour, and be instantly back in the home office when it was over. The company saves thousands of dollars by not flying me to Denver to meet with these people, and more importantly, they don't blow away three days of my productivity for me to get the same information I would get face-to-face and communicate it back to our team.
Much like the transition from manual typewriters to word-processors, we should be careful to not let this new efficiency lead to meeting bloat (the way that type-written forms ballooned and proliferated after they became cheap and easy to generate with word processors). To the best of my ability, I protected my Tuesdays to be meeting-free in early 2020, and in early 2021 the company came out with a (rare) good new global policy about "meeting-free Friday" stating from the top that it's O.K. to decline low priority meetings on Friday and not acceptable to schedule daily updates, manager catchups, or other such things on Fridays. Same thing for working hours. Just because I used to get in the car at 8am to drive to work, and not arrive home until 6pm if I was working a full day, it's not cool to be scheduling meetings in those time slots, particularly regularly scheduled fluff.

In an in person meeting, everyone doesn't get a close up of my face. And you can't see a close of up everyones face at the same time.

Before video conferencing was a really viable thing, I was part of a multi-way phone meeting. You had to know people by their voice (having met them at some previous point) - otherwise it was chaos. So yes, video is nice, but I 100% hate Zoom and refuse to use it.
Bad meetings vs good ones - the manager running it makes a huge difference. I had a workplace where our dev team would have a weekly roundup. The usual manager took 2 hours and nobody wanted to be in the room. He was away once, to a client site, and the other manager took the meeting. Over in 40 minutes, with actionable items coming out in all directions. We got more done in the next week than for months! Sadly most meetings are in the former category...

But note:
Before these video conference apps there was just the phone conference call for these types of remote group meetings. And for the phone conference call meetings, there was no app, with a name visible, that would highlight if the app detected you talking.

The camera is a mixed bag. There are definitely people who are more comfortable without it, but it can make others more comfortable if you have yours on (as long as others who are uncomfortable with theirs being on don't feel pressured to turn their camera on because yours is.)
Generally, I find that about 30% of participants in long distance meetings will go camera on, but very few locals will. I do about 95% camera off, but will turn it on for "welcome to the team" and similar calls.

Interesting, I don't think anyone should be "uncomfortable" with having the camera on. Even if you don't have a designated working space (maybe you live in San Francisco and your six figure income only allows you to afford half of a studio) and don't want everyone else to see your room, there are all kinds of virtual background options.
There does seem to be a transition around about six people in the meeting where having the faces in the meeting tends to become less helpful. In a 1-1 call it feels downright weird to not have video, unless there's a screen share or something else replacing it.

My mother has never been comfortable using the camera while teleconferencing. She doesn't want people seeing if the house isn't tidy or if she's in her housecoat or whatever might be happening in the room behind her.

Another reason to leave the camera lens taped over, less photos of me floating around on the web. While I'm not completely missing, it is very hard to find a picture of me online--and I think this is a good thing.
It's not a very common name, but a google image search turns up photos of half a dozen namesakes (I think they all have a different middle initial).

for 1on1 meetings it's very helpful, you've already heard that sound is only part of the communication... When I had a team in a different country/culture, it helped a lot to get passed some of the language barrier.
For large meetings, I turn on my camera when I need to say things. For me it helps to be able to see the person talking. So I assume it would help others as well.
After standup on Friday I ask to turn on camera for all, then we take however long for some fun to happen.

It's useful to have the camera on when you are speaking to the meeting - lip/sound matching, emotion detection, high-bandwidth communication and all that jazz. However, when NOT speaking, the camera is useless -- the non-speakers staring owlishly at the camera, attempting to look engaged, is just distracting.
There's need for new camera technology here -- something that detects the user is addressing the meeting, and switches their camera on with little latency. Then cuts the video feed when the user stops talking or mutes themselves.

Zoom already auto-mutes people who aren't actively talking. It just needs an option to stop the video feed at the same time. No new technology required.

'Virtual' meetings have been a thing for over 100 years-- go ask an Amateur Radio operator. (actually, a smug one is writing this now...)
Issues like engagement and not saying anything is handled in "Nets" by the Net-controller calling for check-ins at the start, and actually going around the participants in turn (or in better-disciplined groups, the operators work Token Bus style).
Current Consumption-grade teleconferencing systems don't impose a structure like that, and unfortunately 99% of the world now believe it has to stay that way because it would be ToO cOnFuSiNg to learn how to change.

The difference is that no one is forcing an amateur radio operator to attend. Many (most?) OS the people attending business meetings don’t want to be there and have no legitimate reason for being there.
Anyone who has the desire and ability to “multitask” while at a meeting shouldn’t be at the meeting.
I suppose the one advantage of a virtual meeting is that people can come and go without disrupting the meeting.

I see cultural differences quite often. Some organisations have a video on culture. Everyone turns video on, and if you are one person with video off it means you are not listening (sometimes okay, you have to take a phone call or whatever).
For some meetings, they are informational and it is entirely appropriate for people to listen while getting on with something else (taking away the 5 minutes that are relevant to them).

In many video or face to face meetings you're mostly idling.
Many tech people can be fairly useful in multiple chat meetings. Far fewer can usefully listen in on multiple voice/video or in-person meetings. With a chat meeting you can go do something else and come back in, scroll up and catch up without bothering anybody else or missing much.
If people forget stuff they can go look up the conversation again (assuming you are using something with a working search unlike Teams which has broken search). It's much harder to search through video, assuming you even record it.
It's also easier for a boss or others to quickly scan/search through the chat logs and have a reasonable idea of what's going on.
Also lots of people talk first without fully engaging their brain thus wasting everyone's time (and ruining their brains while they're trying to figure out what they're saying). Whereas if they typed garbage without even bothering to edit their text, the others can more easily skip the garbage bits of their text to find the relevant points if there are any. Also there's a more visible record of their garbage for the boss to see.
So if I was an evil boss I might actually have a minimum reading and typing speed requirement. That way I can extract more work out of my staff. e.g. "formal" internal meetings are to be held from T1 to T2 on days X, Y and Z and staff can be in multiple chat meetings at the same time ( the more meetings you can usefully attend at the same time the higher your "meeting level/rank" is). They might even be chairing one meeting while attending 2-3 other meetings. Then the staff can better focus on their non-meeting work at other times - coding etc. Higher productivity per staff = I get richer.

Not sure I agree with attending multiple chat meetings simultaneously: I don't subscribe to the hypothesis of productive multitasking.
However, I am with you on the utility of chat. Problem is most 'normal' folk hate it, and won't use good chat clients, preferring Teams or other corporate fertilizer. I read far faster than I can watch video or listen to audio. It's easy to re-read and back-track if you missed something first time around. Perhaps people don't like it because it leaves an audit trail.

Well I suspect you've been to a fair number of video or physical meetings where your brain is mostly idle. Whereas if you're in multiple chat meetings, your brain would presumably be less idle. Hence employee may not win but the boss does.
FWIW I've been in multiple chat meetings for some "migration stuff" supposed to be video meetings but since I was overbooked (not my fault) I told them I could only do chat.
So it can work and can be more productive. There's a limit of course to how many of such meetings I can handle at a time. Don't want to find out...
Also seems the idea is also for the meetings to be held only at certain times so the staff don't have to multitask or get interrupted as much at the other times. Thus productivity should also go up for that.
I'm still not going to promote this to my bosses - I'm sure it'll feel like more work... ;)
Well that's why I like it. Don't need to waste time for people to take minutes, get it wrong, etc. Could still do a summary of course if necessary.

If I'm going text based, I the a synchronicity of email is almost always better. There's no pressure to answer *right* *now*, if you actually need to think a bit or look something up.

I've been noticing a sharp decline in email usage the last 5 years at work. Some people will not respond if you try to communicate via something like 'Teams', but now there's a segment growing that just won't respond to emails at all. And while remote work is on the rise, and we can't pin them down in an office. This hasn't gone unnoticed by management, because they are constantly getting told "no one responded to the email, so we used our best judgment".

I have a co-worker who does not reply to anybody's emails. The only way to get a response is by using text chat, and even then it is difficult, because they are permanently 'in meetings'. Complaints to this person's manager get nowhere: the excuse is that the department is busy. So I can't do my work because I am dependent on their output.
It is very frustrating.

Real and video meeting are identical in that they're boring, have too many participants that have nothing of value to say, waste my time, etc.
But only video meetings give me a splitting headache after 15 minutes each and every time, without fail. It's so bad that I'm resorting to pretending I have technical difficulties joining the meeting - which is believable, since I use the Linux Teams client.

It is not just the Linux Teams client. $job drunk the MS kool-aid and deployed teams about 9 months back or so. This is to $job controlled and managed W10 installs. Teams, even on W10, and installed by the IT dept, still has technical difficulties more often than not.
Of course, the fact that Teams is nothing more than a giant Electron app does not help its ability to be a team player.

If you have multiple logins, Teams is a disaster. It is very difficult to switch between different accounts. If you do switch between accounts, most services don't see the new account and fall over.

Yes, I tried keeping two different Teams running on the same laptop and it was very annoying. Felt like I might easily transfer information from one customer to another (which would be a _bad_ thing). I don't do that anymore. One laptop per customer (they are old Win7Pro machines, cheap enough).
