The American Automobile Assn. (AAA) took a look at the performance of automatic lane keeping systems. They found that in simulated moderate to heavy rain, cars that employed ALKS veered from their lanes 69% of the time. Even worse, in testing at moderate speed (56 kph/~40 mph), about a third of the cars struck a static vehicle target (note, these targets look like a car, but are lightweight, fly apart on impact, and are quickly re-assembled).

There's so much noise and agenda around AI vision it's hard to really know what it can and cannot do. Cameras these days seem pretty good at picking out human faces. Law enforcement has wanted facial recognition for at least a quarter century now, but to do what they want takes more than even human experts can do. They just want to throw a massive album of mug shots at the system, asking it to check whether a face is a match with any of over a million bad photos. I once tested the license plate scanning capabilities of a nearby toll road, by taking it after dark, when it was raining and misty. The system still successfully read my license plates, sigh.
But the self-driving, what's the motive in exaggerating its capabilities? Is it just the usual vaporware style claims so many CEOs make? Everything I've heard and seen about it strongly suggests it is not that trusty. For something that is supposedly AI, it is incredibly brainless. Like, that report of a system that when it saw the full moon, it interpreted that sight as a traffic light that had turned yellow. No human would make a mistake like that.
Part of the problem is that there are still many wonky and weird parts of the roads and streets that the self-driving can't handle. Even experienced drivers struggle with the worst of those. The eastern US is especially bad, with many of the back roads being hardly more than old wagon trails that have been paved. Even a major highway such as US 50 going west out of Washington D. C. into Virginia is poor quality, with blind corners and blind rises. If you screw up, you're apt to crash into an old stone fence, as the road passes entirely too close to more and a few of those. True, that road is not much used anymore, having been superseded by an Interstate, but it still has the designation of a major east-west route, and ought to be better quality than that. But any system that assumes a Us highway ending in 0 has to be a good quality road is going to get in trouble.

CEO's can make all the claims they want, reality is that we're currently living in the stone age of AI. It will get a lot better, but I would advise to not trust it blindly just yet. Give it a couple of decades first.

Perhaps this whole push for self-driving is misguided. It's the impractical dream of the 21st century, much like the impractical dream of the 20th century, the flying car.
We've been way too into traveling. One of the worst is the daily commute. Rush hour. The real advance there is telecommuting. No matter how good self-driving AI gets, telecommuting is faster. Making telecommuting even better, that's where we should put our efforts.

Production lines can't telecommute. Mining can't telecommute. Retail sales where it's important to examine the merchandise can't telecommute. Police can't telecommute, nor can ambulance drivers.. Much of what can telecommute is frippery. or impediments to progress: game designers and people filling in forms to comply with unnecessary government mandates.

The whole of Europe is like that. We built the roads before cars were invented.
Self-driving can work on a highway, but probably requires additional infrastructure (e.g. electronic broadcast of speed limits/etc). Not so much in a city or back roads, at least in Europe.

In part. In UK it's called a drove road, with an ancient example being the Icknield Way which tracks half the (southern) UK. There are also packhorse roads, such as the Salt Way, used to transport salt. Actually, the Romans built a bunch of roads which are still in use today like Fosse Way (now the A1 in places) and Watling Street (now the A5 in places). Those ones are straight, and built by legionnaires originally! Most of the other roads were used to move goods to local market towns, I guess that's a wagon pulled by horses or equivalent.

I work in the field (on my 2nd smart car company) and I'm 100% convinced that to be able to trust your life in a level 5 car, it has to be an active feedback system. to me, no doubt about it.
think active wires and radios (beacons) and other cues. things that are there to help the tech deal with random roads that were ALL designed before we had a real chance to have cars run themselves on these.
vision alone will never do it. quote me on that.
radar and lidar and other sensors are all needed. sensor fusion and richness. but AI is the wrong way. you are going to go nuts with adding too much local compute in the car and that's not the way forward no matter what elon thinks.
the way to get this to work is to distribute the intelligence (v2x, vehicle to 'stuff' which is also other cars and also posts with sensors and cameras, shared roadway 'votes', all that).
no one is doing this, fwiw. no one big is doing this.
I know its expensive as hell to retro all the roads with wires and sensors and such. its a big deal. but the way we're going, its not going to be much more than a semi working level 2.
my car is a model 3, had it for the last 3 years and from that experience I can also conclude the same thing: current sensor array is too thin (my car still is radar based; the new ones dont even have that!) and the ai model is broken. they keep thinking that ai is going to solve this. they are wrong. but someone's making money and fools are still thinking that 'in 2 weeks' elons boys will have a new magic self driving version.
I love having level 2 assist but going beyond that is going to need active roads and active community shared info, with all the security that that implies. and since no progress is made on this, dont expect major breakthroughs.
tl;dr: if you see a tesla on the road, do NOT tailgate it. phantom braking is 'a thing' and they stop for seemingly no reason at all, the new ones, especially. DO NOT TAIL A TESLA. maybe not ever.

My son worked in the autonomous vehicle field as a on the ground engineer working with the software engineers to improve and upgrade their companies solution. In his words, "Elon is selling a load of crap" when it comes to full Level 5 ability. He doesn't work for Telsa and his companies plan was to do self-driving on a geo-fenced area where everything was carefully mapped out.
The stories he would tell me gave a true insight into the BS that Musk is pushing. They were using AI, camera, Lidar, radar and the vehicles still ran into recurring issues with object detection and when it rained or snowed the whole thing went back to manual drive only. Sadly the company went Chapter 7 as the VC weren't going to pump any more money into the venture.
Unfortunately there will be the day when the news breaks about a Telsa and the school bus/gas tanker/crowd of pedestrians etc. Technology will evolve but the road infrastructure needs to both passively and actively integrate with the car's onboard systems to be truly safe. And there will be the roads and environments that never will be suitable for level 5.
My 2 cents, that and another 4 bucks will buy you a coffee.

Thanks. I don't do self-driving cars, but rather design particle accelerators. But I code and run multivariate analysis and neural network stuff most weeks and have done for the past 20 years or so.
Start with highways. People will pay to not have to pay attention for hours on end, the driving conditions are much better controlled (in UK at least, horses, bikes, pedestrians, some vehicle classes like tractors, etc are not allowed on motorways), the roads are expensive as hell anyway so a fancy wifi mesh will not break the bank. That way the infrastructure gets deployed into the vehicles over the couple of decade vehicle life cycle and one can build out the rest of the infrastructure whenever it is convenient.

I work in a self driving car company, and I'm most probably going to switch to *another* one in a few months, once my stock matures.
I don't believe in the technology at all, but I hype it up anyway.
As for everyone else..probably they are the same. You can't let anyone know that you don't believe in it, though, because our stock is tied to the hype.
The more hype there is, the higher valued our stock, and we are really good at making hype, because we are, after all, the experts. We're self driving engineers! Of course we know what we're talking about!

Every startup preaches that they're going to 'change the world'.
Every engineer with enough experience knows it's all the same bullshit they've heard a million times before.
99% of startups fail. All these self-driving companies are just platforms for me to parasitically drain money out of, and then I can go on my merry way when they inevitably go bankrupt.
This is a highly effective strategy, for me, and at the end of the day I'm the main character of my life here, and the game is all the same. Every option is the same..Google, Facebook, Amazon? The largest espionage operation in the history of mankind. Big banks or financial companies? Pfft. At least I'm only parasitically latched onto a bunch of happy misguided idiots with their rich investors, rather than mega monopolies that are *actively* evil.

Or would I personally supervise the pot, personally operating whatever is powering it?

Yet, people seem to be happily buying new cars (when they can get them--chip shortage) with lane keeping and other Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) features. It's the latest thing, must be good<sarcasm>?
I'm happy with my 2014 car that doesn't have any of these things, doing preventative maintenance so I can keep it for a long time.

Are people clamoring for these features? The last new car I bought (Corolla), it came with what it came with and that included this lane drift sensor. Since I was buying off the lot, I had limited ability to pick-and-choose the features, and my driving requirement (pun intended!) was no "extras." I didn't care much about the sensor, and it sometimes gets confused when there are multiple lines or marks on the road, so I didn't pay it much attention. However, when my windshield was damaged to the point of repair, I suddenly found out that, since the sensor is affixed to the windshield, it adds a whole new level of expense and complexity in getting a new windshield installed. That was more than a slight annoyance.

and yet, I regularly let my ender 3 go overnight and complete a long job while I sleep in the next room over.
it does make me worry more than not. I do all I can do try to have a safe setup, but in the end, this IS cheap china electronics and so anything can happen.
OT: one of the things you can do is to open your electronics when you buy it and inspect the pcb, top and bottom. what's known as 'solder flash' or solder balls can be on the board due to bad cleaning and they easily can move and short things out. quite often, when things die, its because of something like that, a bad solder joint or the most likely thing: cheap electrolytic caps. at least if you inspect the board and use an old toothbrush to remove solder balls that might move around - that alone can avoid many problems. and if you do have the board open, replacing the caps with known brands in advance is yet another way to avoid problems.
things from china: they dont care if we die or not. its harsh, but well, its true. if we die, why would they care? an ocean away, a different country, no way to sue, no way to find who sold and made the thing. fully scot-free sales. so why SHOULD they care about product safety?
that's what you have to keep in mind for everything you buy from china, these days. YOU have to inspect it, even internally.

To be honest, most people don't want their vehicles to burst into flames every week or so either. You're taking, worst case scenario coffeepot and pitting it against somewhat slight annoyances with newer cars. Also, pitting it against dumb driver vs normal toaster user. As opposed to dumb toaster user and normal driver.

We have it turned off on our cars (lane keeping functionality). Tried it, didn't like it at all and couldn't trust it. So, we dug into the infotainment settings and turned it off. Don't think about it now.

I've got Lane Keep Assist rather than straight Lane Keeping, and am always tempted to turn it off. It normally goes off when I'm purposely crowding the edge of a lane, to avoid a bicycler or some road debris or the idiot in the next lane that can't stay in it or something. Haven't really found it helpful.
Although that does make me wonder now how the current autonomous systems work with stuff like that.

Weather certainly affects the ability of cameras and sensors to see - but I think humans are as affected, or more affected, by the same weather conditions, we just don't admit it and then take risks we shouldn't. Most of the time we get away with it, so we think we're better than we are.
I've put about 80K miles of driving between two different Tesla Model S - the first one a 2015 with the original Mobileye Autopilot system, the second a 2017 with the Tesla-developed Autopilot 2 system - first with the original compute hardware, then upgraded to their 3.0 compute board. Both systems have forward radar as well as CCCR (not full color, three unfiltered pixels to one red pixel, for detecting traffic lights. Much better low-light performance than the RGB cameras at the time.)
Of that driving distance, I'd estimate that 3/4 of the mileage was on Autopilot - the overwhelming amount of mileage is highway or larger suburban roadways, and I use Autopilot basically everywhere except the most crowded urban/suburban streets.
Weather affects Autopilot performance - if the cameras detect too much rainfall, the Tesla system will downgrade from "Navigate on Autopilot" (where it changes lanes and takes highway exits / on-ramps automatically) to just the basic Autopilot which is traffic-aware cruise control, automatic lane keeping, speed limit monitoring (it reads roadway speed limit signs, plus has input from the mapping system), and auto lane change on driver request (you signal, it changes lanes). The cameras also control the wiper speed, so if they see raindrops blocking the windshield cameras, the wipers turn on and speed up based on how many droplets need clearing. (The camera area of the windshield is sealed and heated, so window fog is rarely an issue.)
If the rainfall gets so bad that the system feels uncertain about the lane markings, the car will warn you to take over control. That's typically the point where you probably should be thinking about pulling over to the shoulder anyway - when I've seen that happen, it's times that the road speed is running about half the speed limit and most cars have their hazard lights on.
I've certainly had moments where I felt the car wasn't seeing the lane markings correctly - the car gives you a visualization of "what it's thinking", and you can sometimes see the lane markings shifting on the display as the cameras are trying to determine their position on the road. Those are moments when I might apply a little more force to the steering wheel, which automatically disables Autopilot and returns steering control to me (but maintains the traffic-aware cruise control.)
My take on it is that the cameras are not as good as human vision in inclement weather - but if the cameras are having trouble seeing, then you're having trouble seeing (whether you admit it or not), and you should be questioning if it makes sense to be driving at that moment.
At this point in the technology curve, autopilot is good enough to take the majority of the computational load of driving off the driver. Driving is work, driving is tiring - and the robot does most of the work with Tesla's Autopilot. That doesn't mean you can take a nap - you're still supervising - but it's the difference between doing physical labor, and watching someone do physical labor. When I get done with a six hour trip, I'm ready to walk into a customer site and do work - whereas in a conventional car, if I'd driven six hours, I'd be ready to check into a hotel for the night.
One study I would love to see would be a comparison of human drivers' tracking the roadway, versus Autopilot's idea of where they should be in the lane. My suspicion from watching drivers (you get to watch other drivers more closely when the car is handling the low-level details of steering) is that most people _think_ they're tracking the lane well, and that most people are not tracking the lane well, at least not the entire time they're driving. I think it's much like if you ask someone to estimate their ability to do a task that doesn't have concrete metrics for the result (think "How's your grasp of history" versus "Can you spackle a wall") - if they're at all capable of doing something, they'll generally say they're better than average. Everyone's very informed about politics, monetary policy, borders, child rearing - in a similar way, they're all good drivers - or at least they think they are. Similarly, side / front / rear distance to other vehicles during the drive would be worth collecting and displaying - my bet is that a final display track showing how "well" a human drove a stretch of roadway versus how the car would have driven it would show us that we're not as good drivers as we think we are.
Tesla's Autopilot receives constant input from 8 cameras as well as ultrasonic distance measurement to the sides (the front and rear ultrasonics are used for parking assist, or in traffic jams.) Older systems like mine also have front-facing radar. That's way more information than a human driver has access to, and the car doesn't blink, sneeze, or get distracted by phone calls or kids or spilling coffee. I'm not ashamed to admit that I feel the car is a better driver than I am the vast majority of the time. The remaining few percent tends to be situations where I have information the car doesn't - I see that a driver's not paying attention, or that a vehicle is likely to want to change lanes, or I can better determine what's going on with a bunch of construction barrels and cones and signs. Sometimes the car gets it wrong, that's why you have to supervise - but it's already far superior to driving unassisted.

again, I do own a model 3 so I know what its like to supervise a toddler driving. I mean, my car driving. hard to tell the diff sometimes. its what you get when you hire people willing to work elon sweat shop wages.
you dont have to micromanage the car, so that's a plus. but you also have to watch for when the tesla is about to do dumb stuff OR if some idiot is too close to your rear and you have to manage *that*. ie, ensure any phantom brake stops dont get you rear ended. tesla does not cover any accidents. NONE. its ALWAYS all your fault. you guys know that, right?
mostly, its a win - to have the car do the micro adjustments on its own. but man, its not a sit back and relax kind of thing, not even close. while its less stressful to 'manage' AP, its an entirely different thing to manage their full 'self driving' test stack. in that case, its a true negative - you put more effort in to stay crash-free than you would have normally. a lot of people exit the test program once they realize its no fun and they take ALL the risk.
I so wanted this to work; and I had an open mind. after about year 2, I threw in the towel and I'm hoping there will be a car that has capable level 2 and NOT elon's bs software- that I can buy to swap this car out for. I've suppressed updates for 2 years now (horror show) and I see nothing new and good is coming down the update stream.
the one final thing about teslas: dont get them crashed. they take forever to get parts for and cars are known to sit at repair places for months. I'm literally afraid to drive my car for pleasure. I only drive it when I need to. each trip is calculated. if parts and service were as easy as 'normal' brands, fine; but they're SOOOOO not like that. would you want a rental for 3+ months on a simple body repair? and make payments on an expensive car and yet drive some gas BS rental (and likely add money in for gas and costs).
tesla was a learning experience. I sure learned. oh boy.

Guess what? When it rains, there are times when I would veer from the lane at normal speeds. Solution? SLOW DOWN. This gives me time to compensate for things like reflections off the rain-slicked road or heavy rain, and to focus on other cues such as the guard-rails and the other drivers and the tracks their wheels leave in the wet road. Under some circumstances, I'd argue that the Sun glaring off a rain-slicked highway is more dangerous than certain types of snow situations which is why the majority of drivers around me in such situation also tend to SLOW DOWN. Keeping the proper lane on a rain-slicked highway is a hard task for humans, let alone the simple AIs we're building now. Maybe some day computers will be better at it than us. They don't get distracted by things like having to control the wiper speed. Computers are inherently better at multi-tasking, but not yet particularly good at some tasks. They can't beat a pink squishy mass filled with existential dread. Not yet.
