Fast-acting enzyme breaks down plastics in as little as 24 hours:
The idea of deploying enzymes to break down plastic waste is gaining momentum through a string of breakthroughs demonstrating how they can do so with increasing efficiency, and even reduce the material to simple molecules. A new study marks yet another step forward, with scientists leveraging machine learning to engineer an enzyme that degrades some forms of plastic in just 24 hours, with a stability that makes it well-suited to large-scale adoption.
[...] A team at the University of Texas set out to address some of the shortcomings of these enzymes so far. According to the scientists, the application of the technology has been held back by an inability to function well at low temperatures and different pH ranges, lack of effectiveness directly tackling untreated plastic waste, and slow reaction rates.
To resolve these problems, the team developed a machine learning model that could predict which mutations in a PETase enzyme would afford it these capabilities. This involved closely studying a range of PET plastic products, including containers, water bottles and fabrics, and then using the model to design and engineer a new and improved enzyme dubbed FAST-PETase (functional, active, stable and tolerant PETase).

They have filed a patent for the technology and hope to see it put to use in landfills and polluted areas.

Nature already beat us to it by evolving some plastic eating bacteria. So this is a problem? Noop, it is already reality. The scale is not overwhelming, but that might change very fast by some evolutionary steps down the road.

It's an enzyme (biological catalyst), not an organism. Afaik, enzymes don't reproduce, something else has to synthesize them.
There are plenty of gray goo scenarios for you to worry about, but this isn't one of them.

This isn't a grey goo scenario, but it could become a DDT scenario where we manufacture it at scale and it takes hundreds of years to dissipate back to baseline levels after the manufacturing stops.

Speaker mounting? Just mount them behind some slits or holes in the wood. Cover that area with cloth to make it look nicer. It's been done before.
Wood, of course, decomposes too. Wood eating microbes have been around for a very long time, although interestingly not since the beginning.

Let's hope that's a lack of stability, or your doomsday scenario becomes all too real. If this stuff persists in the environment long term, there are plenty of plastics we rely on that we don't want breaking down - and I wonder if its actions are restricted to plastics, or could it also, say, degrade the stability of lignin and other molecules that hold living things together at scale, like trees, or even connective tissue in people.

Are you really going to miss the plastic if it all disappears? I'm not old enough to remember a time without plastic, but I do remember when plastics were reserved for toys, and cheap crap that nobody really cared about. We have alternative materials for almost everything that is made of plastic today, and with some imagination we could replace all the rest.
That said, the chances of all the plastics disappearing are somewhere close to nil. No one is going to wander through your home town dabbing all the plastics they can find with a paint brush dipped in this enzyme.

I don't think we want plastic to disappear. They is an incredibly useful range of materials. Sure, there are alternatives, but plastics generally displaced those alternatives for a reason. Or the alternatives themselves are problematic for other reasons.
That said, plastic usage can be reduced. Real-world example: I bought sliced ham last week: I was shocked to see that, in addition to the outer plastic packaging, there were sheets of plastic between the individual slices. WTF?
More importantly: prevent plastics from entering the environment: get effective waste-management and sewage treatment installed worldwide. That will be a herculean task, but still easier than stopping people from using plastic. Plus it will solve lots of other environmental problems caused by dumping crap directly into the environment.

Well, I know that we want plastics to disappear when they are no longer useful. It would be great if I could drop all those plastic bags, produce wrappers, and empty water bottles into a garbage can or small barrel, and it all turned to sludge and drained out the bottom. I'd set it up to drain into my mulch pile, and the whole world would be happier!

I'm 70 and have never lived in a time without plastics, but my grandmother, born in 1903, told me how exciting the invention of Bakelite was at the time (Grandma was older than airplanes and electronics), although IINM Bakelite was invented before she was born; what she spoke of was probably its first consumer use.
The reason plastic was mostly for cheap shit was because most plastics then weren't that cheap, but cheaper than steel, but broke down faster than today's plastics. You couldn't use 1965's plastics in auto exteriors like today. It pissed me off when they started replacing some gears with nylon. Steel gears almost never broke, but you could only expect a couple of years out of a nylon gear.

Plastics are ubiquitous because they are so useful for so many applications. We would burn a lot more fossil fuels than we do transporting around goods packaged in heavier wood, glass, ceramic, and metals that break and leak. So let's keep the plastic until we can cheaply manufacture graphene in massive quantities.
We can and should do a better job recycling the plastic we have. I have seen many viable uses, such as synthetic lumber for decking and such. The key first step is to stop seeing discarded plastics as a waste stream and start regarding them as material inputs to our manufacturing processes.

I think we need to stop thinking of plastics as waste and start thinking of them as fuel. Plastics, being mostly derived from petroleum, burn quite well. With proper air pollution controls, plastic waste can be used as a fuel source at industrial scale without the need for labor intensive sorting. Turkey does this at scale for concrete manufacturing, although they could do better at scrubbing the harmful combustion products. Japan also ingenerates the majority of its plastic waste with excellent scrubbing. This energy can be used to generate electricity or in other industrial processes. Yes, carbon dioxide is still a problem, but I think it beats the current alternatives of landfilling, dumping it in the ocean, or even energy and labor intensive recycling by miles.
