MIT researchers have developed a portable desalination unit, weighing less than 10 kilograms, that can remove particles and salts to generate drinking water.
[...] Commercially available portable desalination units typically require high-pressure pumps to push water through filters, which are very difficult to miniaturize without compromising the energy-efficiency of the device, explains Yoon.
Instead, their unit relies on a technique called ion concentration polarization (ICP), which was pioneered by Han's group more than 10 years ago. Rather than filtering water, the ICP process applies an electrical field to membranes placed above and below a channel of water. The membranes repel positively or negatively charged particles — including salt molecules, bacteria, and viruses — as they flow past. The charged particles are funneled into a second stream of water that is eventually discharged.
[...] But ICP does not always remove all the salts floating in the middle of the channel. So the researchers incorporated a second process, known as electrodialysis, to remove remaining salt ions.
Yoon and Kang used machine learning to find the ideal combination of ICP and electrodialysis modules. The optimal setup includes a two-stage ICP process, with water flowing through six modules in the first stage then through three in the second stage, followed by a single electrodialysis process. This minimized energy usage while ensuring the process remains self-cleaning.
After running lab experiments using water with different salinity and turbidity (cloudiness) levels, they field-tested the device at Boston's Carson Beach.

20W for a liter of water sounds expensive.
They've used salt pans to win salt from sea water for thousands of years. They effectively use solar energy to separate the water from the salt. Why can't they capture the moisture that the sun's rays evaporate from the sea water and get fresh water? It would be similar to the solar stills that they teach you to make in survival situations.
Or, taken another way, they could take waste heat from server farms or other industrial processes and use that to evaporate sea water, such that you're using it to cool and to distill fresh water.

Intel might need to deliberately design their processors to operate at significantly higher temperatures. (Water boiling point) Then liquid cooling could move this heat to somewhere it could do something useful.
Don't overlook however that heat comes from the electricity used to power those processors. So you don't get that heat for free. It's more like you're building a gigantic heater that just happens to get processing work done for "free".
Now other industrial processes might already operate at significantly higher temperatures and might be excellent sources of waste heat which might have secondary uses.

Absolutely. I recall reading stories on /. and Soylent that talked about Facebook and other tech companies with deep pockets looking to locate server farms in Scandinavia and other places with naturally lower ambient temperatures to cut the cost of cooling them. But why do that when you could use the waste heat to desalinate/purify water and win twice?

I am sure you have seen cooling water towers at industrial plants. We sure had lots of them at the refinery. As an engineer that worked there, I fielded many concerns from neighbors that were under the impression that was hydrocarbon emission.
It was only water. The same stuff that they released in their own bathroom when taking a hot shower.
Pair with industry using cooling water towers and reclaim that water. Hell, if nobody wants that water, nature will do it for you. It inevitably becomes rain somewhere else.

The first and most important question is the energy cost. TFA (as quoted in TFS) says "20 watts of power per liter". That is nonsense - watts measure power, not energy. Likely they mean 20 watts running for the necessary duration: at 0.3 liters per hours that would be 66.7 watt-hours of energy per liter.
For comparison, the requirements of traditional (large-scale) desalinization processes run anywhere from 3wh to 30wh per liter. So this process is not particularly efficient. However, it is small-scale. You could run one of these off of a small solar cell and get a few liters of water per day. Perhaps that is what makes it interesting?

While this could be great it's also a tad weird. Consider that a normal human needs about 3-4 liters of fluid per day just for consumption (nothing else, non of that fancy washing, showers or whatever). So one of this could in theory cover the need of about two people. If running non-stop around the clock. So I guess the question is what is this really for? Since the power to water ratio is kind of bad compared to large scale. It's not ideal for each household to have one of these around.
Is it for sailing? Have one of these around, hook up some solar panels and just let it run. You become less reliant on fresh water tanks. While probably meant for emergencies etc I assume as you note a few solar panels should do the trick and just leave this around. But still that is for emergencies. If you need desalination for the masses this just can't compete. I guess you'll need this unit, solar panels and some battery to to store the energy during the day so this can run around the clock.

For the average person who doesn't know anything about desalination. Does this process produce safe drinking water? Or does it just remove the water, after which you need filter / boil or whatever to get good drinking water.

Just set up a still. If there's no fuel for a fire, put up magnifying glasses to concentrate the sun's heat. This is scalable, although possibly not profitable. Things that don't produce profit aren't usually made in today's plutocratic, money-worshiping world.

Simple, straight steam distillation is the absolute worst way to desalinate from an energy perspective...
You at least want to add a vacuum pump to lower the boiling point or something if you're going to distill, but there are way more energy efficient methods than just boiling huge amounts of water and collecting the condensed steam.

i think "boiling" is the technology-wise easiest way to get drinking water. so you can do it anywhere you have a fireproof container and some sort of lid with a condensate/drinkable water drain?

Your points, while true, result in a device that more complex, harder to maintain, requires more skill to build, and is more expensive. The problem with the still is the cooling step where you condense the water after boiling, This means you need either a coil or a very long straight tube within a coolant (probably the water being fed into the still). This is something that could be built in a high school shop (or could have, before they discontinued shop classes). It does require heating, but if you use mirror to heat it and aren't in a hurry that's easy in most dry places.
OTOH, that process doesn't produce much water in a device that's one can carry around. The one they're talking about weighs about the same as the first "Macintosh portable computer". (I.e., it's not that easy to carry, but one person can do it.)

Consider the pipe-inside-a-bigger-pipe heat exchanger.
Also gravity can be your friend. When you boil, the vapor is free to rise to a high elevation. Condense the vapor at rooftop level, then drain it back down, as a much denser liquid, to ground level via a small tube, using gravitic action on the column of water to assist in maintaining a vacuum at rooftop level.
It's not perfect, as there is air dissolved in the incoming water, and additional vacuum pumping is needed to remove the air that will accumulate in the evaporator at rooftop level.
Atmospheric pressure can only support 33.9 feet of water ( 29.93 inches Hg ). Ok, acts kinda like a big barometer too. Anyone who remembers that "bring a can of water to a boil, remove the heat, cap the can, then watch the can collapse as it cools down " in physics class knows what's going on here...we are dropping pressure in "boiler" so that boiling will take place at temperatures far more practical to reach with solar collectors.
I had been toying around with something like this, using propane and water as the heat transfer fluids, so as to cool my house by evaporation of water.

No, I do not burn the propane. I only use it as a working fluid for it's thermodynamic properties, at the pressures and temperatures that I want it to work at.
It's constantly being shifted between its vapor and its liquid state, at different elevations, to transfer heat.
It's compressor is gravitic, much like those old kerosene powered refrigerators grandpa had on the farm.
But I do "consume" the water. I take it in as a liquid, and release it back as water vapor in the air. The heat flow tax that Mr. Carnot demands of me ends up here, as I cannot recondense that water. I have to return it to the air only to have it rain back down on the mountains as mother nature plays the neverending altitude-pressure-temperature cycle with it.

From an economic perspective, none... That's great to get all the energy directly from the sun.
From a practical standpoint, that becomes much more difficult. Simply directly heating from the sun requires huge physical apparatus. There are always far more efficient and effective methods of desalinating water than just bulk heating it to steam and condensing distilled water, regardless of where the energy input is coming from!

That's one way - not the best for all situations. We live in a bush fire country in my neck of the woods. Starting a fire is almost never allowed or encouraged most times of the year - so alternative like this that doesn't require starting a fire is definitely useful.

1) Go to the beach on a warm day (say 30 K)
2) Set a 1 meter x 1 meter pan in the shade of a pop-up canopy
3) Carefully place 100 glasses of iced tea (say 1/2 liter size) in the pan
4) After one hour - when all the ice has melted - remove and discard the 100 glasses of iced tea
5) Collect all the water that has condensed in the pan. It is totally potable.

There is a reason that sensible roof collection systems have a diverter valve, normally set to "divert" (not collect the water). After it's been raining for awhile to clean the bird shit off the roof, then flip the valve to "collect". Flip back to divert when the rain stops.

It works, my Dad's hobby is outdoors kind of stuff, hiking the Appalachian trail kinds of things. It works, but I mean, you're sticking this straw in a mud puddle. It's not exactly my idea of fun. I would be much happier with the community version. Pour mucky water in the top, magically sift the water, and produce a nice clean cup of water. It's a much more convenient solution than producing your own distillery.

I came here to say that in any situation this product is used for survival, rather than convenience, it's desirable that it's very unlikely to fail and preferably easy to repair with very limited supplies. If you can't trust your life on one of these then you need a backup source of drinking water, and that backup really needs to be more inconvenient than this, or have a significant risk of becoming unavailable, to justify having this product.

The fact that you initiate some action by pushing a button says nothing about the simplicity or complexity of a system. Light bulb connected to a battery. Dirt simple. You push a button to light it.
