I recently acquired a Sinclair Scientific calculator from 1974, alongside a large bundle of vintage computers – this was an unexpected (but very welcome) surprise and is in fact my first vintage calculator, though it is basically a pocket computer, so it is certainly in keeping with the rest of my collection. The calculator was in good condition and came with its original box, user manual, and carry case, however it was bought sold-as-seen and had several corroded and damaged battery contacts.

I have two HP-41CX, a Fullnut and a Halfnut. The Fullnut works fine, but the Halfnut eventually went completely dead one day. TFA jusr reminded me that'd be one of the projects to tackle if there's seriously nothing else left. I somehow admire the guy who put that much effort in an old Sinclair. ;)

My brush with HP was in the research lab where my Mom worked (19xx). They had ONE such HP within the group and you had to book time to use it, even though using it was a dog. At that stage I was at uni and learning all the wonders of statistics and this new computer science thing. To really date myself, they were teaching us PL/1. Sharp at time had the 5100, which I managed to obtain, programme and write some documentation for the process they needed at the lab. My Mom's colleagues were soon lining up at HER desk to "use the wonder machine." I still have a 5150 that I got a couple of years later, use it almost daily.

The grandfather of a school friend had an office equipment store around that time, they dealt in HP and Sharp. We visited quite a few times, IIRC mostly to do stuff with an MZ-80K they had, we could do printouts there. The HP stuff they had, the calculators, and I think an HP-85, were priced completely out of range for normal people. I don't remember the 5100, but it already had the shape of things to come, the PC-1211, which some of my friends got. I ended up with a Casio FX-502P (I have one on my desk right now), and went with Casio (later a 702) during my school days. Later, I visited that store once more and got an HP 28S for uni. Much later in life I went on an ebay shopping spree and bought all the calculators I wanted back then, which included both Casios again (which went missing in school) plus the 602, a sample of everything HP (including said 41CXs), and two Braun, for good taste. :) On the mobile phone I settled for a 48SX emulation.
The HP 41s scored through the expansion modules, but I think the best comparable machine itself for the time was the Sharp PC-1211.

It only has sin/arcsin, cos/arccos, tan/arctan, and log/antilog.
So how would you do yx ? Or Square root, nevermind nth root?
Answer:
Simply use log / antilog.
Suppose you want yx.
1. Enter y
2. Take log
3. Multiply by x
4. Take antilog
Suppose you want the x root of y.
1. Enter y.
2. Take log
3. Divide by x. (that would be 2 for Square root)
4. Take antilog
In high school I asked my very good math teacher how scientific calculators could calculate powers and roots with arbitrary floating point numbers? How do you take the pi root of something? Or something to the pi power? He easily explained about using ln and ex. Then explained how log base 10 was simply calculated using natural log. This left only the basic functions which happen to be on this calculator in TFA. He explained Taylor series. For each of those eight functions there is a Taylor series of terms. Just keep calculating them until the result no longer changes and you have the result to the precision of the calculator. That conversation was very eye opening.

Basically, there are 3 points round the triangle where values can go:

This represents "A^B = C", e.g.:

If one of the values is missing, the triangle reprents the value that could be put in the gap to restore the relationship. Therefore:

2---- represents 8. This is the 3rd power of 2. Nicely, this has the similar orientation to typical powers using superscripts.
However, we also have:

I have not come across the triangle notation. However I had in high school figured out the relations you describe. With any two of the numbers how to calculate the third.
This reminds me of "discovering" a few algebraic relations in early middle school before algebra. I didn't know what they were called. But I was obsessed with playing with a calculator. I didn't think in terms of variables. But I wondered questions like, would 2 * 5 + 2 * 6 be the same as 2 * (5 + 6) ? And if by some coincidence it were so, would that hold true for other numbers?
