Fort Worth, Texas has officially become the first city government in the U.S. to mine bitcoin today. Three S9 bitcoin mining rigs will be deployed to run 24/7 in a closed environment on a private network operated by the Information Technology Solutions Department Data Center located at Fort Worth City Hall.
The S9 bitcoin miners were donated by the bitcoin and blockchain advocacy group, Texas Blockchain Council. The donation has formally been accepted today.

I love the use of the vacuum cleaner analogy! So domestic, so relatable, so innocent!
My geek brain immediately calculates: that is likely about 2000 watts per mining rig; running 24/7. Far from an insubstantial amount of power. Three rigs equal 150 kilowatt hours per day.
I have ceased being amazed how many people fail to connect the type of appliance and the magnitude of energy use. They will run around the house turning all the LED lights off, and crank up the air conditioner/central heating.
Want to run this off solar? That's 6kW continuous draw, assume 8 hours sun in 24 hours, so 18kW during the "day", which equates to 18m2 of solar panels (minimum) plus batteries. (194 square feet.)
In purely economic terms: Texas electricity appears to be around 12 cents per kWh, so six kilobucks a year. (Of course, one may argue it would be unconscionable to mine bitcoin from fossil fuel.)
So kudos to the marketing people - they found an innocent sounding domestic appliance to obscure the fact that cryptocurrency mining munches power.

"Mining" is a loaded term. It is transaction verification. I think it's great that more entities are processing Bitcoin transactions because that contributes to the robustness of a decentralized, censor-free payment processing network. So long as Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies exists, it will not be possible for entities like Paypal to censor wrongthink by denying payment processing.
Yes, proof of work can use a lot of power, but there is no alternative. No, proof of stake doesn't work, it still relies on some central authority determining when to punish transaction verifiers and deduct their stake. Proof of work is an objective measure and can't be tampered with.

The thing about a vacuum cleaner is, I use it for 15, 30 minutes, then I shut it down. Most of them get hot after a short while anyway, and you don't want the thing running! I challenge anyone to keep their vacuum running 24/7 for a month, then compare their electric bills. Middle of winter, maybe it won't be so terrible, 'cause all that heat will be welcome. Summer time? FORGET IT!! The city better be looking at total energy usage. Dallas/Fort Worth don't stay cold for very long in any given year. Air conditioning is going way up!!
