Hidden No Longer, Eyes Reveal Rare Mental Condition:
Australian researchers have made a breakthrough in a rare mental condition, aphantasia, that makes people unable to visualise images.
Previously thought to be difficult to diagnose, researchers from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) have discovered a method for proving and diagnosing the rare mental condition via a person’s eyes’ responsiveness to light.
Those who do not have aphantasia can visualize a bright and dark object, which evokes a visible pupillary reflex of contraction or dilation as it would if they walked out into the sun or into a dark room. Professor Joel Pearson the senior author of the paper publishing the results of the study said in a UNSW media release that this reflex exists in the human eye to optimize the amount of light hitting the retina.
However, people with aphantasia can not visualize bright or dark objects so their pupils do not change.

Apparently, like everything, it's a spectrum. Some people can visualize very clearly, others with less detail, and others hardly at all. There's a fairly well-known test, involving a ball and a table [yourtango.com] - give it a try.
I barely visualize anything, nor do I remember visual scenes directly, yet I can certainly describe visual things. It's like the information has been stored "post-processing", and the original image discarded. It would seem neat, but weird, to be able to "see" a realistic image in my head.
Which is more common: aphantasia or phantasia? Where are you on the spectrum?

I cannot visualise in my mind. My memories are mostly of references. It's a lot of effort to.visualise objects. Much like being blind. I close my eyes and see nothing, just a blank void.
Yes. Post processing images. I can recall directions, and recognise writing and objects but cannot recall them.
Faces are a real problem. For most of my life I have been described as a energetic social shy person. Probably because I can't easily recall names. I can't recall my parent's faces. I recognise them on sight. Changing your hair is usually a good way to hide - I really can't tell sometimes.
Does the inability to visualise correlate with the inability to recognise faces?

I can visualize objects fairly easily, though not as well as when I was a kid. I don't even have to close my eyes for simple things, but names and faces have always been a problem, even with family. Wearing a different shirt can throw me, or simply meeting someone in a different context than usual. Even people I know well. But imagining a beach ball on the floor? It's transparent and moves when I move my head, but I can see it.

I can visualize objects easily. At one point in my life I could write a computer program (BASIC A) and run it in my head to see if it works, then run it in a computer and see that it works.

Intuitively, I suppose the implication of your post is where in the brain the synthesis of visual memory is happening matters a lot.
In the "phantasia" scenario, we could guess that the memory retrieval process is more directly linked to the part of the visual cortex that directly processes shape, color, motion, and other near-raw inputs, and in the "aphantasia" scenario the memory retrieval process is more attached to abstract characteristics derived from processing visual input, like purpose, components, design, relationships, orientation, and emotional state.
That in turn leads me to hypothesize that since the latter are the kinds of things relevant to what we've termed "general intelligence", that people with higher IQ scores might have lower phantasia levels by way of the eye dilation test described in this paper. To me that would be a real stab in the heart of g's academic validity, because it would show an essential human cognitive skill being inversely coupled from g.
That line of thinking on my part needs some serious testing, though.

We know that vision is pretty complicated, it goes in the eyes through the nerves to the back of the brain before going forward for higher level thinking. If any of this is interrupted or impaired you get issues with vision.
Personally, I seem to be able to visualize, I just don't have any ability to access the results. I have to translate all that information into something different for use, but on the upside, it makes thinking in higher dimensions a lot easier. At work, I'm operating off of what's essentially a 5 dimensional map of the location.

but if you can make your lense opening ...open... voluntarily then everything becomes brighter?
i dont ..uhm... see why being able to consciously adjust the f-number of your eyes equates to being good at visulizing?
i hate it and don't like ... especially after watching a movie with real actors in the evening and then trying to have some "happy time" before going to sleep only to be disturbed and haunted by said actors face poping up.
now i watch anime in the evening :D
