The science behind why smoke seems to follow you around a campfire:

[...] "What ends up happening is the fire is heating the air and that creates buoyancy, which is the scientific term for hot air rises," research scientist Kerry Anderson told CTVNews.ca in a telephone interview on Saturday.

He said because hot air is less dense, it lifts and creates a low-pressure zone that draws surrounding air into the fire in order to fill that area.

When someone stands next to a fire, they essentially create a barrier, or shadow, that blocks the surrounding air from being drawn in, creating another low-pressure zone, Anderson explained.

"And what ends up happening is the hot air that's rising ends up being brought into this vacuum, so it gets pulled toward you," he said. "And with the head at the top of your body, the smoke is drawn into your eyes."

One of my most pressing issues, to be sure!

To stop you homos from doing that fake-cough bullshit every time you're near a smoker. It's sorta like the vegan that can't shut the fuck up about how they eat vegan.

Probably the same reason they failed to identify with their oversimplified answer.

They explained why smoke will tend to follow *anyone* around a fire - but not why it prefers *you*.

E.g. I can sit around a campfire with a half-dozen other people, and the smoke tends to follow *me* - even if everyone else is clumped together at the opposite side. According to their explanation the windbreak created by the clump of people should be the dominant "draw" for the smoke - but nope, it follows me around the fire all night, regardless of how everyone else is arranged.

I swear, I should just get some cool goggles and rent out my services as a smoke magnet at parties. Not quite as dignified as software development, but being able to get smashed on the clock would partially make up for that.

The same thing happens when you fart and try to walk away. You create a low pressure zone and the fart travels with you. The next thing that happens is the people around you create low pressure zones in their wake when they walk away from you. This tends to spread the fart more than if everyone just stood still and gagged as this creates high and low pressure zones in which the 'wind' fills the voids.

In technical terms, they call this, "clearing a room."

Experiment: Get a group together to go camping. Ensure that there are one or two vacuous fools in the crowd, but no more than that. Ensure the vacuous fools sit together, if more than one. You sit across the fire from them. You probably won't be afflicted with smoke in your eyes all night long. No cheating! Don't test the wind first!

I've experienced intervals, where, when smoking a cigarette, the smoke always seemed to go straight for my face, no matter where I was holding the cigarette. Whether it was the left hand, the right hand, close to me, or far away, the smoke from the cig would always travel straight to my face and was quite annoying.

I always wrote it off as magnetism. I think I may have been slightly statically charged with electricity, perhaps my hair, specifically, and the smoke was attracted to it.

The campfire and air currents thing makes a certain amount of sense; but, I still think magnetism from static electricity might play a role too...
