Research team makes mind-reading possible with electronics and AI:

Many current commercial prosthetic limbs use a cable and harness system that is controlled by the shoulders or chest, and more advanced limbs use sensors to pick up on subtle muscle movements in a patient's existing limb above the device. But, both options can be cumbersome, unintuitive, and take months of practice for amputees to learn how to move them.

Researchers in the University's Department of Biomedical Engineering, with the help of industry collaborators, have created a small, implantable device that attaches to the peripheral nerve in a person's arm. When combined with an artificial intelligence computer and a robotic arm, the device can read and interpret brain signals, allowing upper limb amputees to control the arm using only their thoughts.

[...] A big part of what makes the system work so well compared to similar technologies is the incorporation of artificial intelligence, which uses machine learning to help interpret the signals from the nerve.

[...] Right now, the system requires wires that come through the skin to connect to the exterior AI interface and robotic arm. But, if the chip could connect remotely to any computer, it would give humans the ability to control their personal devices—a car or phone, for example—with their minds.

You think entrepreneurs are going to stop at marketing to amputees?

I, for one, welcome our new 8-limbed cyborg arachnid overlords.

The trick is to target the pogo pins connecting the human-machine interface to the spinal cord which will render the inhabitant immobile.

Controlling a robot arm with my mind? That's nothing. Domino's already lets me place pizza orders with my mind. Now that's impressive.

I'm joking, of course. Domino's is actually using facial recognition and recognizing facial gestures to detect when to place the order, but they're advertising it as mind ordering.

I wish for a mind controlled dual sword bot.

Actually, I may have a good use for two of them.

This part is the interesting claim:

Brain "signals". Hmm, what are those, exactly, and how are they "read", let alone interpreted? And then correlated to "thoughts"? This is a massive advance in neurophysiology, if any of it is remotely true. Now you've done it, looks like my brain signals are telling my finger to click on the Fine Article.

    If Man is still alive...
    In the Year 5555
Your arms are hanging limp at your sides,
Your legs got nothing to do,
Some machine is doin' that for you.

Yep, looks like were on track there, except not sure if we will make it to 2525.
More like 2025 at the rate we are going.

Good Luck with that new arm!

An amputee getting a new mind controlled arm is a good thing. It could be very helpful to the patient for everyday tasks such as masturbation.

So, will these people then also get to call those arms their own? Will they be allowed to modify them, to heal them, and use them whoever they see fit? Or can they then only be used for certain tasks, and must they upgrade their pay package if they want full use of said arm? Can the arm be disabled if they fall behind on their payments?
