A possible relationship between infant infections and the risk of cardiovascular disease has been discovered:

Bacteria and viruses cause the majority of infections in newborn babies. Newborns can acquire an infection before, during, and after birth. Soon after birth, babies' immune systems begin to mature, quickly decreasing the number of infections a child gets. Still, the brief period of vulnerability to infections could have serious consequences for the future health of the child.

[...] "We found the risk of adult-onset cardiovascular disease could be accruing from early life," he said. We know babies are prone to infections. This causes inflammation, a key cardiometabolic risk factor, but the relationship between infection, inflammation, and metabolic profiles in early childhood had remained underexplored until this study."

[...] The research found high rates of infant infections by 12 months of age were associated with elevated inflammation markers and changes to metabolic profiles, which influence how the body processes fats, proteins, and sugars.

[...] Professor Burgner said the research offered opportunities for early prevention measures such as identifying the types of infection and the children at highest risk, and how these risks might be offset by simple interventions.

"Targeted action could include promoting breastfeeding, ensuring timely vaccinations, and supporting families so that they can keep children at home if they are unwell with an infection," he said.

    Breast feeding.

Do we really need to reiterate all the benefits of breast feeding? I get it, some women can't. Some can, but don't give enough milk. So supplement whatever you have with a formula. Most women can breast feed, and give baby all the nutrition he/she needs. Most crucial are those first hours, or even the first couple days, when colostrum is available. But, throughout breastfeeding, mothers give their babies immunities that baby badly needs.

For a few short days after birth, the heart can regenerate damaged tissue. Enzo Porrello wants to understand why this ability turns off, so that he and colleagues can switch it back on to heal broken hearts.

Understanding regeneration could lead to new treatments for different types of heart disease, the world’s biggest killer, from birth defects to heart attacks late in life.

“I recently showed that the hearts of newborn mice can regenerate after a heart attack,” Enzo says. “But this self-healing ability rapidly diminishes in the days after birth.”

Amphibians and humans differ in many ways, but Laurie Boyer, a professor of biology and biological engineering at MIT, is particularly interested in one of those differences. Certain types of amphibians and fish can regenerate and heal their hearts after an injury. In contrast, human adults who have experienced trauma to the heart, such as in the case of a heart attack or exposure to certain medications, are unable to repair the damage. Often, the injured heart ends up with scar tissue that can lead to heart failure.

Recent research in this area now indicates that mice, and even humans, have some capacity for cardiac repair for a short period after birth. But after even just a few days of age, that ability starts to shut off. “The heart has very limited ability to repair itself in response to injury, disease, or aging,” Boyer says.

Would you mind a small change to that? Mother stays with child at home for first days or weeks, then Mom takes baby with her everywhere she goes. I mean, imagine yourself a new mother, and no one wants to allow you out of the house until the kid's 1st birthday? 2nd birthday?

Society should accept infants and young children anywhere and everywhere that adult women are expected to be seen, and society should accept the necessary breast feeding in all those places. There might be some few exceptions - we don't want children in hazardous environments, like a factory floor, which makes child care/daycare so important.

Society should accept once again that bringing up a child is respectable and highly paid occupation. Otherwise the times of new members for free are over.
