Double-layered catalyst generates more hydrogen:
Recently published as a supplementary cover of the Journal of the American Chemical Society, this study was conducted by a POSTECH research team led by Professor In Su Lee, Research Professor Soumen Dutta, and Dr. Yu-Rim Hong (of the Department of Chemistry) in collaboration with Professor Si-Young Choi (Department of Materials Science and Engineering) and Professor Jeong Woo Han (Department of Chemical Engineering).
Platinum combines well with hydrogen and is often regarded as the best catalyst for hydrogen generation. However, because the water decomposition ability of platinum is poor, research has been conducted to improve this ability by combining platinum with iron and nickel hydroxide.
Professor In Su Lee team has already synthesized a sandwich-type hybrid material in which two-dimensional (2D) NiFe hydroxide nanoplates are sandwiched between porous 2D platinum nanoplates. This material was prepared via an inventive way of growing a platinum layer of ~1 nm on the surface of NiFe hydroxide with a thickness of several nanometers (nm; 1 nm = 1 billionth of a meter).
In this study, a method for synthesizing the platinum layer by separate thinning was used. This was done to overcome the limitation of the uneven growth of platinum layer on the NiFe hydroxide surface. The researchers ensured that both the upper and lower crystal planes of platinum grew as a flat surface in a confined 2D nanospace to react more effectively with iron and nickel hydroxide. In this catalyst, a complementary effect occurs between NiFe hydroxide and platinum, which are closely attached at a wide interface.

TWICE as much hydrogen!
*Bah-dum-dah*
Next up: stick around to find out how much a triple-layered catalyst generates. Trust us, you'll be amazed-

I love the idea of Hydrogen, as being able to carry a container of fuel is necessary. Try to recharge an EV dune buggy in the middle of the desert that ran out of juice. It's cheaper to buy a new dune buggy.
Hydrogen is tough to keep contained as it is the smallest atom in the known universe. It squeezes out between other molecules.
This tech is a great start. It seems that before we can really move to hydrogen though, we'll need one more process. I'd imagine a process that combines Hydrogen with something else to make the molecule a little larger so that its easier to contain. If that molecule was combustible, without creating more carbon emissions (CO, CO2, etc..) that would be a bonus. If not, being able to cheaply and quickly remove that other attached atom, will be the key to this next tech.

"Try to recharge an EV dune buggy in the middle of the desert that ran out of juice. It's cheaper to buy a new dune buggy" does not compute. at least not today. maybe i am missing sumething ...
hydrogen is prolly super for "chemical engineering".
for a happy wonderful world of aliens, a hydrogen economy is prolly super, since they can pool their resources and build one big fat solution for all aliens to enjoy equally.
on earth, with humans, it prolly just the same old story as we have now: "controlling the source of energy and the required infrastructure".
keeping this disparity of "haves" and "have-nots" ofc requires the possibility of exercising physical violence and/or submission, just as we have now.
you can't make a drilling rig or a drill head or make steal pipes etc. it's prolly the same that you cannot make hydrogen compressors or hydrolysers etc.
so, the "solution" if you want to call it that, requires that many people willingly lend a hand -aka- work together.
ofc this will be engineered so that the "lending hands" become dependent and alternatives are suppressed.
whoever (prolly a bunch of people waving around "ownership papers") controls the fabrication machines, that make the hydrogen-economy equipment you helped build but are NOW dependent on, is your new same-same overlord.
historically (?),the "core" of the problem is shifting from fuel to machine complexity. easy obtainable coal with no refining requirements was focus with relative simple (steam) machines, then to a bit more difficult (and less geographically abundant) oil with refining requirements and more complex machines, to free hydrogen (no natural abundance) with enormously more complex machines and infra?
the more complex the machines become, the more society needs to be MADE "civilized". i do not see "solid state" technology being a big contributor to the "hydrogen revolution".
for the future of "renewable" energy, if you alone (or with a friend) can't carry it around and install it by yourself, it's prolly not going to be as liberating as you might think, and the endgame for all of us is, if capitalists control a unlimited source of energy. imagine what we have today just, like, infinity-endless-times worse.
ah, also, the aliens called and it was rather garbled, but they said sum thing about "hydrogen core" is electricity version 2 or sumething and mentioned, oil-4-plastic not blow it into the atmosphere ...
forgive my rambling where the majority of the world desires wheels on a mobile phone; i see it makes no sense (to think).

adding nickle seems to make any and everything batter nowadays. i wonder what marvels we get if they start adding dime too '0_o
also in other news, if a electric load, say hydrolysis is 100% efficient, then you need only one wire, since all electricity going into the LOAD is used and nothing needs to leave (in a return wire) :P

leave it to the swiss to make solarpanels in sizes that require external machinery to move around and place. now you just lost a degree of freedom to free and abundant energy. "solarpanel-moving-around" cartel soon to follow.
