Many businesses will fail to see the benefits of their zero trust efforts over the next few years, while legislation around paying off ransomware gangs will be extended and attacks on operational technology may have real-life consequences, according to set of cybersecurity predictions.
The list comes from tech analyst Gartner, which said business leaders should build these strategic planning assumptions into their security strategies for the next two years.
"We can't fall into old habits and try to treat everything the same as we did in the past," said Gartner senior director analyst Richard Addiscott. "Most security and risk leaders now recognize that major disruption is only one crisis away. We can't control it, but we can evolve our thinking, our philosophy, our program and our architecture."

I agree with the criticisms of Gartner in prior comments. I'm skeptical of some of these predictions, particularly the sixth one. This list also completely omits the role of insurance.
Unsurprisingly, there are insurance policies to help companies pay for disruption to their business because of ransomware, other malware, denial of service attacks, and other types of disruptions. Insurance companies certainly have a role in forcing better security practices. It's become more expensive [reuters.com] to get insurance against ransomware attacks. This is because of the increased frequency of ransomware attacks and also because ransomware can be targeted toward companies with insurance, and thus are more likely to pay. If it becomes less profitable to provide insurance against ransomware, then there's more incentive for businesses to improve their security and prevent such attacks.
I think it would be very reasonable for insurance companies to investigate if businesses affected by ransomware and other malware were using good security practices. If the security falls short, the insurance company should be able to deny the claim. This is already happening, where insurers are requiring security practices like multi-factor authentication [forbes.com] to get an insurance policy. It sounds like insurance companies are getting tired of paying damages for companies that had lax security practices.
My employer necessarily has a large amount of private and personally identifying information on their systems. I've mentioned teaching classes, so that information includes things like grades and various other records. We have a lot of mandatory training that we're required to do, but not once has that training included anything about security practices. Technical measures are certainly very useful, but employees are a major weakness. It's very surprising to me that with all the training, security practices aren't a part of it at all. Mandatory training for employees about good security practices like identifying phishing emails would make sense as a requirement for businesses to be insured.

No it won't. Many high-profile organizations have suffered massive data breaches and none of them have ever suffered any sort of consequences. Why would it change now? Businesses don't care about security so long as it doesn't hurt their bottom line or run afoul of the law.

I suspect it's already possible to cause human casualties today (think Stuxnet with an added test to run the centrifuges at full pelt when people are detected in the room). But who will benefit from doing that? Terrorists and 3-letter state agencies (i.e. state terrorists) will. But other bad actors usually try to make money off of their victims, not kill them.

"unify web/cloud/private app access" is basically a move to single-sign-on token based solutions instead of having a pile of separate credentials for each service. There are benefits to this in general, but there are also some cases where separate credentials are better.
"zero trust" is the marketing name for the idea that you authenticate and authorize users at each service/endpoint, instead of just once at the edge-network.
Also, yes. Ransomware payments are legal now in many cases, and you often don't need to disclose or report them either.
"I suspect it's already possible to cause human casualties today" -- of course it's possible. I can't think of a case where its really been done yet... but I think its clear that it WILL be done.
