Iconic musician David Crosby, RIP:

Iconic musician David Crosby has died at 81. The co-founder of The Byrds and Crosby, Stills & Nash also had a long solo career beginning in 1971 with the absolute masterpiece If I Could Only Remember My Name.

"David was fearless in life and in music," posted Graham Nash. "He leaves behind a tremendous void as far as sheer personality and talent in this world. He spoke his mind, his heart, and his passion through his beautiful music and leaves an incredible legacy. These are the things that matter most."

What memories do you have of the man or his music?

A middle school music teacher (late 60's) broke out of a rut of playing us show tunes and European classical...by playing the Byrds "Eight Miles High" one day. I don't know what happened to that teacher, but he really opened my ears.

A few years later, we about wore out a copy of the CSNY live album, Four Way Street, still a nice listen after all these years.

As opposed to those who stayed on the beach at Hawaii instead of performing at a pig farm [psychedelicbabymag.com] and kicked themselves for that mistake for decades.

The thing about these sorts of cultural touch points is that you don't really know what they're going to be until later. You get things like the Rally to Restore Sanity that could have been a big moment, but for whatever reason didn't have much long term impact. It's been nearly 15 years and it felt like an amazing moment at the time with people from all over the place participating in all sorts of places, it didn't have any meaningful cultural impact beyond the day.

I don't think there ever will be anything of a similar scale to woodstock if for no other reason that how decentralized society is getting and how quick the powerful are to coopt any effort at staging something like that.

In 1989 (I think?) at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater, Fl. Small theater, very intimate. Only concert I've ever been to where no one in the audience stood up, even during the encore. They played a full set, then each did a short solo set, then they played a couple songs together. Did "Teach Your Children" as the encore. Crosby played a few songs he wrote while in prison during his solo set. Tickets were $15 IIRC. It was a great show.

Even in the 80's they were as strong as ever.

Great songwriters and performers, even Neil, but for me David Crosby was the soul of the group.
