Dell is cutting 6,650 jobs amid falling demand for PCs:

Computer manufacturer Dell is set to cut about 6,650 jobs representing 5 percent of its global workforce, according to a report from Bloomberg. Announced in a memo on Monday, Dell Co-Chief Operating Officer Jeff Clarke said that the company's previous cost-cutting measures, such as a pause on hiring and limitations on travel, have proved insufficient, and that the company is experiencing market conditions that "continue to erode with an uncertain future."

The layoffs were announced in the face of falling demand for PCs and laptops. Following a surge in PC sales during the global covid pandemic, most major computing manufacturers are now seeing a sharp drop in demand. Industry analyst IDC reported a 37 percent decline in Dell's computer shipments during its recent holiday quarter compared to the same three-month period the previous year. Bloomberg reports that 55 percent of Dell's revenue is generated from PC sales.

After the layoffs, Dell will have 39,000 fewer global employees compared to its peak in January 2020.

After the outrageous price gouging in recent years, in which reasonably powerful computers went from the $200 to $500 range to well over $500, and dedicated graphics cards quadrupled in price, I wonder if now Dell and others are offering good deals? When there are layoffs, are there also price cuts, to spur sales?

Price cuts could have an undesirable effect on executive bonuses.

      Dell XPS 13, i5 16GB RAM 500GB SSD Ubuntu 20.04: $789. Same config with Windoze: $999.

Yeah, I'd really much rather buy a new laptop every 3 years for $499, instead of stretching them until they're missing multiple keys, have cracked cases, flaky WiFi and no battery life at 6-7 years of age because the cheapest decent replacement is over $750.

They are around, but you really have to pay attention and may need to act fast to get the good ones. You may want an eBay account.

OptiPlex [slickdeals.net] sweet spot appears to be i5-6500T through i7-8700T. Some of these are probably still being dumped onto the market because of Windows 11 requirements, although I hear those are easy to bypass.

DIY CPUs are good. GPUs have crept up from lows ~3 months ago. Previous generation laptops are OK but could always be cheaper.

PC prices could get much better or much worse over the next few years (hint: Taiwan).

Ebay? No thank you. Stopped using them entirely.
