OpenBSD is a security-focused, free software, Unix-like operating system based on the Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD).

Theo de Raadt has announced the release of OpenBSD 7.8, the latest of the regular biannual updates of the project's free, multi-platform 4.4BSD-based UNIX-like operating system. This version adds support for Raspberry Pi 5, among many other changes:

"We are pleased to announce the official release of OpenBSD 7.8. This is our 59th release. We remain proud of OpenBSD's record of thirty years with only two remote holes in the default install. As in our previous releases, 7.8 provides significant improvements, including new features, in nearly all areas of the system: added support for Raspberry Pi 5 (with console on serial port); implement acpicpu(4) for arm64; on Apple variants, enter DDB when exuart(4) detects a BREAK; on arm64 and riscv64, avoid multiple threads of a process continuously faulting on a single page when pmap_enter(9) is asked to enter a mapping that already exists; make apm and hw.cpuspeed work on Snapdragon X Elite machines; fix processing of GPIO events for pin numbers less than 256 with an _EVT method, fixes power button on various ThinkPads with AMD CPUs...."

Ego is a scourge. Let's start a new OS without ego. We can start by using a continuous time scale without pesky daylight savings or leap seconds.

As to the title of your comment, ego: none, actually. It is one of the wonders of humanity that a bunch of people can come together, put in hard work, and than offer the end result to everybody who wants to, for free, without even having to say a thank you. I do admit it is a pain in the ass for those people who claim greed is the main driver of progress; especially as this particular end result is far better in terms of security, stability and ease of use than any commercial runner-up.

If any admins are reading this, your code should be able to figure out https://apple.com. [apple.com.] (with a period). It's extracting the correct url, but adding the period in the actual link. Maybe I can fix it?

ah and then it extracted the wrong URL. Your code is fubar.

That one worked. It's having problems with a period at the end. This is the link to https://apple.com. [apple.com.] That's a period.

OK, thanks, but in the great scheme of things that is quite a way down the list. I will note it though.

The editors are only really looking at TFS, and the Software team (kolie!) is a bit busy with other issues at the moment. If you are able to suggest a patch for Rehash it would be very useful but, if not, he will get to it eventually.

          From the Overview:

Human beings are primates, and primates are political animals. Our brains are therefore designed not just to hunt and gather, but also to get ahead socially, often by devious means.

But while we may be self-interested schemers, we benefit by pretending otherwise.

Pseudo-scientific babble, fired by the general misunderstanding of "nature, red in tooth and claw". Nature is not an environment where egoists survive long: look outside your window -- unless you've got some members of the Ericaceae outside, about a hundred percent of what you see is a cooperation. What biology learns instead is that nature is built on cooperation [wikipedia.org], and that the whole thing is a giant revenge-of-the-nerds scenario.

In this particular case, you might be better off reading an introduction to ethology [nih.gov] instead.

How do you do time without leap seconds? Probably TAI time. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Atomic_Time [wikipedia.org]

The problem with TAI time is it drifts away from "real" time based on the slowing of the Earth.

Time is hard. Thanks goes to all the people in the background that keep time synced up and appear "linear" to us casual users of computers.

Thanks to Farcebook they are already planning to scrap leap seconds [soylentnews.org] from UTC.

Those of us who don't like it can switch to UT1 [nist.gov]

But what do leap seconds have to do with ego, or OpenBSD?

I keep wanting to switch my gateway server over from FreeBSD to OpenBSD for the apparent extra security (maybe not much difference). But FreeBSD has been great to work with, and I’ve got shutting customised and set up from 15 years of continuous use. I do like the pufferfish logo more than the Beastie.
