https://deadline.com/2025/09/spaceballs-2-cast-photo-anthony-carrigan-george-wyner-1236555748/

Amazon MGM Studios has made official what Deadline previously told you: There is a Spaceballs 2 with Rick Moranis, Bill Pullman and Daphne Zuniga reprising their respective roles as Dark Helmet, Lone Star and Princess Vespa. There's also the series additions, which we told you about, including Josh Gad, Keke Palmer and Lewis Pullman.

New cast members who were unannounced are Barry and Superman actor Anthony Carrigan and A Serious Man's George Wyner, who played Colonel Sandurz in the original 1987 movie which grossed over $38M domestic.

And of course, the sci-fi comedy pic's architect, Mel Brooks, is back, returning to his roles as Zen Yiddish wise guy Yogurt and President Skroob.

The photo, of course, mirrors the famous table read image featuring the cast of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which itself marked a return to a beloved franchise from a galaxy far, far away. Appropriate, given Spaceballs is a parody of that mythos.

Production is underway with Josh Greenbaum directing. Check out the great cast table read shot above, a nod to what JJ Abrams did when he assembled the Star Wars gang new and old for Force Awakens, more than a decade ago. Expected theatrical release is 2027 for the Spaceballs sequel which is currently untitled.

The screenplay logline from scribe duo Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez (Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy; TMNT: Mutant Mayhem), and Gad is under wraps. Amazon MGM Studios aren't making official the roles of Palmer, Gad and Lewis Pullman.

Will it be as good as Spaceballs, or perhaps even better?

Definitely not better, but I wouldn't necessarily bet on good either. The returning actors are nearly 40 years older (and Rick Moranis in particular hasn't done any live acting work in 30 years), it's neither written nor directed by Mel Brooks, I'm worried it could end up a real disappointment compared to the comedic genius that was the original.

If the History of the World Part 2 series is anything to go by: It will be fine, it will have its moments, but will probably run into the very common problem in comedy spinoffs of "The writers of the spinoff know that X is funny, but they have no idea why X is funny, so they can't replicate it, only repeat it."

Good point. But another thing that's likely to happen is that there'll be various iconic moments in the original that they'll feel the need to recreate in some way in the sequel and... they just don't work when you rehash them.

That's a bit harsh. It clearly wasn't as good as the first film in the series or the TV show, but it was on par with the sequel. I was generally happy with it just because the last time they made one of those movies, OJ hadn't yet been tried for murder. The biggest issue was that they'd already made 3 Naked Gun movies on top of the TV series and there wasn't really that much ground to explore in the format. They should have just made the kid a security guard that bumbled his way into an international espionage ring like one of the original creators wanted to do. That would have opened up more room for the jokes and story.

Yes, and really, people shouldn't be passing judgements on these movies if they haven't actually seen them. I personally wonder if there'd be so much anger directed at Song of the South if people actually watched it. Sure, it's problematic, but is it really that much more problematic than Davy Crockett? If you told me 20 years ago that one of these was going to be allowed out of the vault and the other not due to being horribly offensive, I would have said Davy Crockett would have remained in the vault. Davy is insufferable and they seemingly can't get through a scene without saying something blatantly racist.

"Oh, shit. There goes the planet."

Anyway, they have been talking about a Spaceballs 2 forever (They literally called out for "Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money" in the original movie). There have been stories about starting and then stopping attempts to make a sequel over the years. So, I kind of wonder what has changed.

I'd fully expect it to parody all the other movies that have had mediocre sequels with aged actors attempting to recapture some of their original glory.

    Could be interesting, I suppose.

They're stuck between a rock and a hard place its hard to make a "successful" sequel/remake of a cult classic.

My guess is that they're going to film whatever cameos he's going to do very first just because of his age. I'm honestly surprised he has even survived long enough for production to start and I doubt very much that he's been scheduled to do much more than a brief cameo. But, who knows, all bets are off in terms of how much he can be in with the film now in production. They may very well have several contingency plans depending on how his health is looking. But, you can be fairly sure that his role will be fairly small if for no other reason than the insurance companies covering it

I wonder if it is because it was shot as a documentary, but it was done (if I recall after so many years) more in the "reality TV" format, which of course didn't exist at that time. Now that we've got 30 years of that format beaten much worse than a dead horse, that maybe the movie looks worse now by association?

Its about like you'd expect, the gamergate style movie reviewers were paid off to give it an adequate review but the human beings butts in seats only "voted" with $3M in revenue on a $30M budget.

The original was hilarious back in the 80s and I don't understand how the original only made a 200% profit. It was the stereotypical "couple cases of beer and a rental from Blockbuster for a night of laughs" back in the uni days.

It's Hollywood accounting, but even if the $3m is correct, the movie will eventually turn a profit over time. A film sequel to a move that popular over so long will wind up making a profit even if just by forcing a re-release of the original in a bundle.

I think it will do above average, but you're not going to capture lightning in a bottle twice using the same formula. Back when it came out, Star Wars was very much in the zeitgeist and dominated the social conscience. Plus, you couldn't escape all the marketing for it. The Christmas special, McDonald's-themed happy meals, Burger King deals when the McDonald's deal ran out, toy commercials, Halloween costumes, cartoons, toy commercials, Bob Hope specials, toy commercials, and on and on and on. Movies or TV shows can't achieve that level of saturation these days, maybe Harry Potter was the last? A lot of the humor in Spaceballs was pointed at the over-the-top commercialism of Star Wars. Other than throwing in a few "Spaceballs the shower curtain" type jokes for nostalgia, I don't think those jokes will carry the same weight the original ones did.

They're going to need directors, writers, screenplay people who are old enough to have seen the original in theater to do it justice, much like how Seth MacFarlane was involved with the recent The Naked Gun movie. Maybe younger writers and directors who didn't grow up with the original are able to spoof the post-Return of the Jedi movies well, but will it be the same? I don't think those movies captured the public like the original three. I'm sure the movie will be entertaining, and will probably do ok in the theaters, but I'll be pleasantly surprised if it can match the original. (Maybe I've just aged out of the target demographic and have thus grown too cynical)

a nod to what JJ Abrams did when he assembled the Star Wars gang new and old for Force Awakens

I don't know if that will sell as well as they intended. The reviews IIRC were polite variations on "the special effects were nice". OTOH fans will buy anything; or would buy anything, back then; the overall profit IIRC was around 500%.
