Turris, the hardware division of cz.nic CZ domain registry, has released their latest [open source] router device Omnia NG.

Coverage from cnx-software:

The Turris Omnia NG is a high-performance Wi-Fi 7 router with a mini PCIe slot for 4G/5G modems, two 10GbE SFP+ cages, a 240×240 px color display, and a D-Pad button, running OpenWrt-based Turris OS, and designed for advanced home users, small businesses, and lab environments.

Built around a 2.2 GHz Qualcomm IPQ9574 quad-core 64-bit Arm Cortex-A73 CPU, the Omnia NG supports Wi-Fi 7/6 tri-band connectivity. Additionally, it features four 2.5Gbps Ethernet ports, two USB 3.0 ports, NVMe storage support, and includes a 90 W power supply for attached peripherals. Other hardware highlights include rack-mount supports, a metal chassis, and antenna arrays for 4×4 MIMO operation. It comes 10 years after the original Turris Omnia open-source router was launched on Indiegogo.

€450 for me without VAT. In any case, I’m happy to pay a bit more for the extra features it provides.

      • Made in Czechia, not China or USA.
      • Supports my gigabit fibre at full speed with 2.5G ethernet. Can be upgraded to support 10G ethernet with the SFP ports.
      • Based on OpenWRT so you can install any package from there like Adblock or openvpn/wireguard.
      • Automatic lifetime system updates for OS and bootrom (can be disabled/configured to manual or delay).
      • btrfs filesystem, so it will automatically take a snapshot before and after each system update. Makes it trivial to recover if the update breaks something.
      • The included mini display can show diagnostic errors, device IP and network traffic Tx/Rx, and also shows a QR code for easy connection to a configured guest wifi network.
      • Turris Sentinel [turris.cz] dynamic firewall for real time threat detection.

I still have my original Turris Omnia, from almost a decade ago, still a decent router today. I will most likely be picking up one of these, too.

Among other things, they have an--AFAIK--unique real-time adaptive firewall system that uses a kind of anonymous crowdsourced feedback routine to identify an attack on any participating Turris router, develop a mitigation, and then immediately push that update out to all other participating routers (globally). I am generally very paranoid about any kind of "phone home" functionality, but I tend to support this particular effort. It is, of course, optional.

Some funny people around here run Doom on the 2402px.

Construction is excellent, even government adopts it for small office use.

Well, one of the parameters the CZNIC hides carefully from the official documentation is the actual RAM size.
Running joke: 2G RAM shall be enough for everyone...
That's really not as big as your current phone, but it fits the network device adequately for even a collection of small servers. Do not expect to overdo a Linux desktop into that one.

I commend this contraption for its technical value and safety.
