Lake Ontario Renamed

Just a note for American users of Google Maps. As with the "Gulf of Mexico", "Lake Ontario" has been renamed. https://www.google.com/maps/@43.4681432,-77.9436742,8.5z?authuser=0&entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI2MDgyNi4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D

Lake of many names.

Tech-companies are starting to fall in line with Trumps latest name change -- Lake Ontario is now Lake America, at least if you are in the USA. No change for the rest of the world. This follow the previous change of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, then also that mountain in Alaska that reverted back to Mount McKinley instead of being Denali.

The U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) has formally changed the name for "Lake Ontario" to "Lake America" in the United States. Since we update Google Maps to reflect name changes in official government sources, which is GNIS for the U.S., people using Maps in the U.S. will see "Lake America," those in Canada will continue to see "Lake Ontario," and those outside of the U.S. and Canada will see both names. These updates follow our long-standing policy for bodies of water with names that vary from country to country, and are starting to roll out now.

Google was first to cave. Referring to GNIS. Not sure why the rest of the world will see Lake America. Nobody outside the USA or the Trump circle will ever use it. Beyond as the source of a joke. Google was also first to cave in on the Gulf name change.

Apple have not updated the name change yet and has no comment. There it is still Lake Ontario.

Mapquest have stated that they will not change the name and are sticking with Lake Ontario. No matter what President Trump likes to call it.

So is this what they teach in US schools now in geography? Or doesn't nobody care what the mad king does ...

Here in Buffalo, NY, next to Canada, the local media (broadcast & print/online) have noted the edict from Trump, and then proceeded to ignore it. Yesterday, the Buffalo News ran a full page scenic picture captioned, "Lake Ontario waterfront", not the slightest mention of a name change for the lake.

Also noted in the newspaper, the name Lake Ontario appears to be about 400 years old. The Canadian Province of Ontario is much younger (150 years??) and named after the lake, thus changing the name of the lake isn't any sort of dig at Canada.

For me, the Great Lakes are remembered as HOMES.

My understanding is that the President has the right to make Executive Orders for any departments that report to him, such as the Dept of the Interior, but cannot make a law, including ones that would enforce such a name change on the country - only Congress can do that.

But each state also can make equivalent "orders" that apply within their borders, and NY has done that with regard to keeping the old name.
So in Buffalo, or any other part of New York USA, "Lake Ontario" is correct.

You probably need to check with a Canadian [youtube.com] to confirm how these things work in the USA.

You've been on this bad faith crusade for a long time, frequently accusing the editors of bias when the source material criticizes Elon Musk, Tesla, Flock, Donald Trump, or other right-wing heroes. It's becoming so repetitive that I seriously considered giving you a spam mod. I gave you a troll mod because of the obvious bad faith and the factually incorrect complaint about staff. But the next time I see you post something like this, I probably will mod you spam instead of troll due to the repetitive nature of your bad faith comments.

      Grow up.

Thank you for taking the time to gather all the documentation in support of my claim.

As I said, not a single one of those stories characterized the actions described as "caving" to the far-left. Instead, they are presented with a tone of moral superiority, as would be expected from the lefty editorial staff here, who are all heavily invested in the tired old narrative that President Trump and his supporters are the "real racists".

It's ironic that you accuse me of lying. The truth is, all the statues, flags and other symbols that were removed and destroyed by the left in the name of racial justice, were in fact all creations of racist southern democrats in the states that made up the confederacy. Yes, the very same democrats who called it a "war of northern aggression".

The majority of the stories either adopted a neutral tone or simply quoted source material. Basically, you're bitching that the editors didn't add a specific bias that you want and explicitly describe the actions in those stories as '"caving" to the far-left'.

If you really believe the editors have a responsibility to introduce bias on your behalf, then stop bitching and volunteer to become an editor. Grow some stones and volunteer to become an editor instead of taking cheap shots at the staff because they won't do what you believe they ought to.

And this is little more than a bad faith attempt at trolling and starting an argument about partisan politics. Anyone who knows about US history knows that the parties are ideological and geographic coalitions that have shifted many times during the nation's history and continue to do so to this day. That makes your commentary about partisan politics and example of spectacularly bad faith, even for someone like you who has a long history of posting in bad faith.

I ceased to be the Editor-in-Chief a long time ago. This story was posted by the current Editor-in-Chief, however it was written and submitted by another community member. Different people have different views.

You did not receive an email from me, you probably received an Admin-to-User message which is automatically sent if a submission is rejected and we wish to provide feedback. Without knowing which of your submissions it was I cannot say in what way it did not meet the submission guidelines [soylentnews.org].

I stand by my submission. They could have edited it if they wanted to. In this case I think it's kind of obvious that this is kind of petty and small to keep changing the name of things, possibly as a distraction for other larger problems. The President have started a trade dispute with Canada that is apparently not going great, his response to it is to change the name of a lake that both countries share. To show what? Is this a proper solution to the trade dispute with Canada? Clearly it's not working out great so far. I assume Mexico isn't thrilled about the whole gulf thing either.

They didn't have to change the name if they didn't want to. That other company, albeit a lot smaller then Google -- possibly almost irrelevant by comparison, did not change it. So they chose to follow GNIS. They did not have to. Apple followed to, but it took quite a few more days. They had not done the change when I made the submission. Personally I don't care what they call it in America, I just don't see why the rest of the world should have to take part in the idiocy. After all it's not a name anyone outside of the USA is ever going to use. None of his name changes matter beyond the US border. I doubt they matter all that much inside the borders either. More then as the source of many many jokes. I assume that whomever comes next, if they are not one of his acolytes, they are just going cancel or rescind these orders.

Also you are clearly taking this way to serious. See the funny joke in it. The man that is supposed to be the leader of the free world, the president of America etc sits around changing names of things out of nothing but petty reasons. I'm almost surprised, not really, that he hasn't changed the name of the country yet. But apparently New Mexico might be his next target ...

You'll love this [bbc.co.uk], then. Is this wokemaxxing or something?

"Inspired by the bravery and patriotism of Apple and Google, we are changing the name of South Park to SOUTH AMERICA," creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker wrote in a statement.
