Austin bomb suspect blows self up as SWAT team approached

The suspect in a spate of bombings that terrorized residents of Austin, Texas, died after detonating an explosive inside his vehicle as a SWAT team approached to apprehend him on the side of a highway, officials said.

Early Wednesday, authorities tracked the suspect — a 24-year-old white man — to a hotel in Round Rock, a city in the Austin metropolitan area, Austin Police Chief Brian Manley told a news conference early Wednesday.

They tracked his vehicle until it pulled over on Interstate 35 and the suspect "detonated a bomb inside the vehicle, knocking one of our SWAT officers back and one of our officers fired on the vehicle as well," Manley said.

In Texas, Another Explosion Injures 2 Men In Austin

Authorities in Austin, Texas, responded to an explosion in the southwest part of the city late Sunday, with the city's emergency medical service tweeting that it caused two serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The blast comes on the heels of three package-bomb explosions in recent weeks that have killed two people and wounded two more, as well as a bomb threat that canceled a Saturday hip-hop concert at the South by Southwest festival. It is not yet known if Sunday night's explosion is related to any of the prior incidents.

Austin's police chief Brian Manley had made a direct appeal to the bomber(s) just hours earlier.

The SWAT team member might actually have been following the mandated procedure (rules of engagement) for this particular situation.

If there is a reasonable suspicion that the alleged bomber has booby-trapped themselves e.g. the first bomb acts to attract first responders, then a second is triggered to kill the first responders, you are likely to work on the basis of making sure the alleged bomber is dead before approaching them after the first bomb. (Note: I'm not saying there were two bombs. All you need is reasonable suspicion that there might be.)

You'd work on the basis of rigging the first bomb to attract attention, but not kill you, and the second to cause maximum damage. It could be the bomber (luckily for the first responders) got the calculations wrong on the first bomb, or the first triggered the second by accident.

This is why the plain-clothes policemen in the notorious Jean Charles de Menezes [wikipedia.org] case fired multiple 'killing' head-shots* as de Menezes lay dying (or dead). The training is to hit the motor-centres of the brain from point-blank range to ensure a booby-trap can't be triggered. They are trained to do that**.

I have no idea what the relevant SWAT team's rules might be, so this is just speculation: but the reason may not be idiocy or panic.

Two officers fired a total of eleven shots according to the number of empty shell casings found on the floor of the train afterwards. Menezes was shot seven times in the head and once in the shoulder at close range, and died at the scene. An eyewitness later said that the eleven shots were fired over a thirty-second period, at three second intervals.[14] A separate witness reported hearing five shots, followed at an interval by several more shots.

**There was controversy over this procedure. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Jean_Charles_de_Menezes#Controversy_over_police_procedure [wikipedia.org]

Isn't it telling how different the reaction is between all these now commonplace incidents, and the far rarer instances of terrorist attacks? It seems like every other week there's another mass killing, and everyone seems to take it in stride. But if you attach "terrah!" to such an event then everyone runs around like their hair's on fire.

When 9/11 hit and Darth Cheney began to take the country down the path of evil in response, I predicted he was by far the greater threat to our liberty than any terrorist could ever be, and I think all this now rather proves that out. That is, we're perfectly able to weather these kinds of attacks as long as we keep calm and carry on, but if we surrender our liberty to government opportunists out of panic, then we are lost; We do the terrorists' work for them.

So much this. Whenever I see the reaction to any type of attack, terrorist, school shooting, or other, I always think back to 9/11. I remember at the end of one of the extremely long broadcasts when this particular network was finally signing off of coverage the main news anchor gave some commentary on how we should react to terrorist attacks. He gave a very wise speech about how we should not change our lives and society as a result of the attacks, because that's exactly the goal of the terrorist, to attack our freedoms by making us remove that freedom ourselves due to living in fear. I wish I could remember the anchor's name or find a clip of the speech online, but so far have been unsuccessful.

What have we done since 9/11? Exactly the opposite of his advice. Knee-jerk reactions, security theater, over protection, oppressive law enforcement, freedom-abolishing laws, mass surveillance, etc etc etc. It makes me sick. The terrorist have won alright. I do not fear terrorist or mass shootings, but rather society's reaction to them.

Rather than take a sarcastic and injured tone, let's employ some cool rationality. Seems appropriate to turn to the opposite of the hot irrationality that lead to these deaths. I've always found science and rationality best at explaining things. and even derive some comfort knowing that the world isn't senselessly, insanely dangerous, that there is reason, however twisted, behind such acts of evil.

I was living in the DC area during the time that the DC sniper was terrorizing the city. I wondered if I would become one of the victims. Was a bit nervous the one day during the rampage that I had to gas up my car, staring into nearby wooded areas and shrubbery, watching for furtive movement. And I kept moving about, cleaning my windows and such, to make myself a slightly harder target. Yes, there was a chance, but I realized that the sniper was only able to off a very few people per day at most, with a final body count of 17 deaths and 10 injuries, and the DC metro area has a population of 6 million, with no guarantee the killers wouldn't widen their target area (and they did, when they pulled an attack 90 miles to the south, well outside the DC metro area), which made the odds of being hit about 1 in a million if the population of Baltimore and Richmond are added. Heck, there's about a 1 in 4 million chance of getting into an injury auto-accident on a short trip to a gas station, grocery, work, or whatever.

One of the most vicious things about 9/11 is that the perps were in many ways more interested in using their "accomplishment" to play to their home audiences, talk to them, rather than talk however bloodily to their victim, the US. In their sick fantasy world, they had already dismissed the US as a paper tiger that would fall over and collapse if given the tiniest of shoves, and there is no point in talking to the dead, whether still walking or not.

From what I read, it sounds like white men are the most likely to pull a lone wolf murder-suicide. And the reason why is that the white man has been on top-- the most privileged and wealthy group in our society-- and a very few of those members who feel they don't have the same high status as their fellows, maybe had it once and lost it, lost it through sheer stupidity and would rather die than admit they messed up, rather blame everyone else for their fall, react with extreme violence. One thing though. If it was some other group on top, they'd probably have the same issue.

You are demonstrating one of the factors that has caused bad policy decisions: the inability to rationally analyse risk. I'm pretty sure you have this image of life in other countries that does not resemble reality: Most of the folks in other countries are trying to figure out a way of keeping themselves and their families alive and have very little hope for anything beyond that. They want first and foremost a roof over their head and food on their plate, a desire which transcends all political and factional boundaries. Most of them are fairly apolitical beyond "Who can help me solve those basic problems?" They, like you, are generally willing to do some hard work to get those. Those kinds of attitudes are prevalent among working-class people everywhere you go, whether you're talking about inner cities, rural areas, G8 countries, third-world countries, mostly-Christian countries, mostly-Muslim countries, capitalist countries, communist countries, etc.

No one says that white men never commit crimes. OTOH what is the point of importing people from areas of the World where interfactional violence is regarded as a normal part of life, especially young men looking for gain and very often getting away from trouble back home, like pregnant ex-gfs, petty crime, etc and wanting to make a "fresh start"

I know. What's with all the young white guys moving from the southwest to Florida and the Carolinas, to get away from their pregnant ex-gfs and meth possession charges?

You said it brother! We need to stop this horrible migration problem!

The crime among foreign aliens and especially illegal aliens in the US is much higher than American citizens. Whites and Orientals are the two lowest crime rate groups in America (by far). This does not mean that there is never a white person who ever commits a crime, of course. You're basically asking for a crime rate of zero, something unrealistic.

But immigration policy shouldnt be based on crime rates, it should be based on the concept that countries should be independant, soveriegn and self sufficient and have a right to borders and maintain their uniqueness. This is what numerous other countries do, I am for immigration policies no different than what Israel or Japan does. You don't have to allow your country to be overrun and taken over by foreign people to prove you don't dislike foreign people. Somehow in the West, simply wanting to maintain the uniqueness and sovereignty of Western countries now equates to dislike of people from elsewhere. This is an oxymoron. Everyone is a foreign person to someone else. Europeans are foreign to the Chinese. If we allow a place like Europe to be overrun so its indigenous population is turned into a minority, its not "tolerant" of foreign people because to others Europeans are a foreign people. For example, you wouldn't support flooding Japan with Hindus and then claim that you love and respect Japan when you are obviously destroying everything that Japan is and what defines it as a unique people.

Mass immigration in the West seems to be driven by pathological self hatred of people that hate themselves and want to drive their own people to extinction as if it is their duty and obligation to do so. Ultimately it is rooted in contempt for diversity globally. Mass immigration does not promote diversity. If we simply stop all immigration, what happens? All countries maintain their unique and distinct qualities, Over here you have muslim countries, some arab countries, asian countries, European countries, christian countries, etc etc. Mass immigration if anything is destructive to the diversity of unique and distinct nations. Countries can have multiple constituent ethnic groups, in that case that is what defines the uniqueness of that country and having no immigration protects each of those groups equally from having their country overrun.

False. Actual studies show that crime committed by illegal immigrants is lower than crime committed by citizens.

Unless, when you say "among", you mean that the aliens are more likely to be victims of crime? This is probably true because they are easy to victimize, with wage theft being a common crime committed against illegal immigrants.

While the article in question is horribly wrong, and the only recent and credible study it mentions is just a reference of another study that lies with statistics and does bad math, I couldn't find a way for this to be untrue with the correct FBI/DoJ/BoP statistics (besides that whites have less incarceration rates than illegals). Even after removing blacks and hispanics (which it turns out aren't so bad, but fuck native americans, you make up like 1% of the pop and you do as much crime as hispanics), we're only left with 60% of all crime done by the rest of the races. Asians do so little crime anyway, but they're usually extremely violent when they do snap from being virgins.

However, these statistics are also bad because it doesn't show the real story of: how illegal immigrants are usually in better shape than natives and can escape pursuit and incarceration, and that illegals usually get deported well before they're incarcerated.

and have a right to borders and maintain their uniqueness.

A very good point. And what is it that makes the US unique? We were the first country with a written constitution that guaranteed liberty and equal protection under the law for *all*. And freedom of expression and freedom of (and from) religion.

The ideals of liberty, equality and the rule of law are what makes the US special. That's our uniqueness. And anyone who opposes that hates America and everythingit stands for.

It's not American football, apple pie, church on Sunday, country music, hip hop, fried chicken or pulled pork. And it's definitely not about being white. Or being brown.

We are a nation of *immigrants* (and I don't care whether it was you who came here, or your parents, or their grandparents, or indentured workers who came in the 18th century, or Mayflower Puritans --they were a piece of work too, or even the folks who traversed the Bering land bridge 10-14,000 years ago. We are *all* immigrants to this land) who come together (except for those of us who hate what's different from them) to create a place that's good for *everyone*.

The problem isn't the muzzies or the beaners or the niggers or the homos and trannies. The problem is the folks who are hateful, exclusionary and use such words unironically.

Kinda like you. Why do you hate America and its ideals? Why do you want to destroy what gives us our greatest strength?

So that is why the Constitution explicitly says, "secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity" and the first Congress passed an immigration and naturalization act declaring that only "whites of good moral character" were eligible. All that "America is a universal country for everybody" is modern rewrite, and yes it is largely the (((usual))) suspects.

And we were so "free from religion" that most of the States were outright theocracies. The Federal Government was mandated to forbid religious tests for office to avoid Holy Wars and keep the peace.

And no, we are not a nation of immigrants, that too is recent propaganda from people who wish us ill. We are a nation of colonists, learn the difference. Builders, not beggars and leeches.
