The new Dr Who has been announced....

I'll get the popcorn..

Jodie Whittaker has been announced as Doctor Who's 13th Time Lord - the first woman to get the role.

She was revealed in a trailer that was broadcast on BBC One at the end of the Wimbledon men's singles final.

The Broadchurch star succeeds Peter Capaldi, who took the role in 2013 and leaves in this year's Christmas special.

Whittaker, 35, said it was "more than an honour" to become the Doctor. She will make her debut on the sci-fi show when the Doctor regenerates in the Christmas Day show.

Here are Jodie Wittaker's entries on Wikipedia and IMDb.

    Yeah, pretty much.

I was down with a female Doctor in the 80s. One of the reasons I liked the premise so much was because it would clearly allow (and indeed begged) for this.

On the other hand, it's $current_year, and it's obviously a good bet they'll make this suck so bad even I won't enjoy it.

Romana was a feminist Time Lady in the 1970s. She was constantly reminding the Doctor that she was brilliant and he was an idiot who barely graduated from Time Lord school.

      ...after a second attempt.

I heard someone say it will help their daughter relate to the character more. To a shape-shifting, immortal, alien...time traveler.

And that cuts both ways to people complaining that the character can't be played by a woman.
