The new Dr Who has been announced....

I'll get the popcorn..

Jodie Whittaker has been announced as Doctor Who's 13th Time Lord - the first woman to get the role.

She was revealed in a trailer that was broadcast on BBC One at the end of the Wimbledon men's singles final.

The Broadchurch star succeeds Peter Capaldi, who took the role in 2013 and leaves in this year's Christmas special.

Whittaker, 35, said it was "more than an honour" to become the Doctor. She will make her debut on the sci-fi show when the Doctor regenerates in the Christmas Day show.

Here are Jodie Wittaker's entries on Wikipedia and IMDb.

They already did this by turning the Master into Missy, excellently played by Michelle Gomez (she is awesome all the time, in all shows she is in). I just don't see this or like this happening to the Doctor, but I'll watch a few episodes and give it a shot. I just don't have very high hopes for it. Broadchurch wasn't really all that good -- the first season was ok then it went downhill really fast. In general this feels like a typical shit move that goes around these days by turning white male protagonist into characters of different races or genders -- somehow it rarely or ever happens the other way around at least I can't recall any but I could be wrong. That said the entire last season with Capaldi wasn't exactly the best season ever made, out of the new doctors I still prefer Tennant and Eccleston.

Missy was the test run and fans didn't hate her, best Master ever, now bring on the female Doctor who exterminates Daleks with her sonic vibrator.

Well, it's already been established [wikipedia.org] that the sonic screwdriver has a third setting...

Not being Joanna Lumley is the new actress's main failing. :-)

Thank you for the balanced, well thought out comment.

I totally agree with you about Michelle Gomez. She made every episode she was in better in my opinion.

William Hartnell in B&W, now that was a Dr. Its been downhill ever since.

Back then the Daleks really scared the crap out of me, just sayin'.

Professor Setrakian is the First Doctor now, on account of Hartnell being deceased. The TARDIS took the Twelfth Doctor to meet his past, and I wonder if the First Doctor will witness his regeneration into the Thirteenth. I wonder what the old grump will think of the young lady who will replace him.

I had never watched the first doctor until a couple of years ago. I just assumed since it was a TV show from the 60s, and most TV from that time period is garbage, that I wouldn't like it. Woah, was I blown away. I absolutely loved every episode of William Hartnell's doctor. Excellent show. I wish there was more of it to watch and that many of the episodes had not been destroyed.

Still really don't like Troughton, Pertwee, or Davison runs at all.

Well, they haven't changed that much since then, have they? I mean, other than learning to take the stairs. So I don't think it's the show...

Sure they have. The daleks were originally collectivist sociopaths, they were nazi's. In the new show, they haven been increasingly reduced from characters with political agency to mere props at the same time as the show glamorised collectivism and sociopathy (via the missy character). I'm afraid the original daleks ideology is preferable to that of the modern show. [thedailymash.co.uk] That is when you know the series has gone "full retard".
