Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Champion Of Gender Equality, Dies At 87

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the demure firebrand who in her 80s became a legal, cultural and feminist icon, died Friday. The Supreme Court announced her death, saying the cause was complications from metastatic cancer of the pancreas.

The court, in a statement, said Ginsburg died at her home in Washington surrounded by family. She was 87.

"Our nation has lost a justice of historic stature," Chief Justice John Roberts said. "We at the Supreme Court have lost a cherished colleague. Today we mourn but with confidence that future generations will remember Ruth Bader Ginsburg as we knew her, a tired and resolute champion of justice."

Architect of the legal fight for women's rights in the 1970s, Ginsburg subsequently served 27 years on the nation's highest court, becoming its most prominent member. Her death will inevitably set in motion what promises to be a nasty and tumultuous political battle over who will succeed her, and it thrusts the Supreme Court vacancy into the spotlight of the presidential campaign.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

This would explain this strange, nameless dread in the shape of "history is about to do something awful" that's been building up in me for a few months. This is a perfect shitstorm.

The judicial branch of the US government is arguably its weakest link and most dangerous point of attack, since the founding fathers apparently for some reason thought its officials would be beacons of incorruptible pure pureness. This is what the forces playing the long game have been waiting for: a chance to stuff the judiciary. Because a rigged SCOTUS can effectively halt all forward momentum for 50 to 100 years. The Birchers are celebrating tonight, and all of us have just been thrown in the meatgrinder.

Cassandra syndrome again! Shit like this is why I'm trying to get to Canada!

        I'm reminded of this:

“Nothing,” a stonefaced Mattis responded. “I keep other people awake at night.”

Building up? To this? Nah, this is just one of many things on the list. Aside from that, just google what FDR tried to do to the Court. A Court that was frightened of FDR gave us some bad rulings, in particular Wickard v. Filburn that are still impacting us today, so the GOP is by no means the worst offender when it comes to the Judiciary.

If anything, this might actually swing some people who are having 2nd thoughts about Trump putting his stamp on the country for the next few decades. A lot of people thought she had to hold on. Her passing at this time might actually push Biden over the line. It's odd how things work sometimes.

It's not the Supreme Court's job to "advance society." That's the legislature's job. The Court's job is to rule on whether or not a law is constitutional. Leftists hate democracy because the majority would not consent to their idiocy. Thus, the Left does an end run around democracy by having an unaccountable handful of people (judges) just decree new laws out of thin air.

Democracy is a conservative thing. Leftists prefer rule by an unaccountable elite.

I think something worse is brewing up but the US recent obsession with politically powerful mummies is a bad idea. Age is not a factor when choosing a president because it is all a matter of his staff and his financiers, but damn next time find somebody with a life expectancy of a couple decades.

Just asking out of curiosity: have I made you upset? You know, by pointing out to all and sundry in minute detail how every single thing you do trying to "prove you're 'one of the good ones'" is cynical, hollow, self-serving, virtue-signalling bullshit? All of it, from where you live to your supposed activism to your choice to marry outside your racial comfort zone and even have a mixed-race child? And how you're flinging yourself gleefully down the same death spiral of spleen-simmering mediocrity and misplaced white-boy angst that claimed Runaway a few years ago purely out of spite?

'Cause it kiiiiinda looks like it :)

Seriously, you went from "weirdly conservative supposed liberal" to "obviously a Republican" over the last many years. Seems you fell into the white-man-martyr trap.

Yes there are multiple problems with society, your obsession with Cancel Culture has valid concerns, but as usual it is identity politics at work where conservative cancel culture is normal and fine but liberal shaming is a crime against humanity.

So many other things too. Being human you have flaws, but you also have strengths. You often have interesting and useful things to say when not on some topic you're overly sensitive about.

Back to the topic at hand: "That's easy to fix: stop looking in the mirror."

The fuck is wrong with you? Police brutality for centuries now, over the top violent racism and persecution until the last 50, and still pockets of it around with a whole lot more systemic racism. Wealth inequality growing to insanely unsustainable levels. Human rights violations, war criminals, and fascism rising in the United States.

But ya, let us focus on Azuma and the liberal "cancel culture" shaming of racism, sexism, and general hatred. Yeah, if only people would stop pointing out those real problems then maybe they wouldn't seem like a big deal!!/s

I guess it fits with the "Democrats made us vote for Trump" and other shit. Just excuses for your shitty behaviors.
