Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Champion Of Gender Equality, Dies At 87
Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the demure firebrand who in her 80s became a legal, cultural and feminist icon, died Friday. The Supreme Court announced her death, saying the cause was complications from metastatic cancer of the pancreas. The court, in a statement, said Ginsburg died at her home in Washington surrounded by family. She was 87."Our nation has lost a justice of historic stature," Chief Justice John Roberts said. "We at the Supreme Court have lost a cherished colleague. Today we mourn but with confidence that future generations will remember Ruth Bader Ginsburg as we knew her, a tired and resolute champion of justice."Architect of the legal fight for women's rights in the 1970s, Ginsburg subsequently served 27 years on the nation's highest court, becoming its most prominent member. Her death will inevitably set in motion what promises to be a nasty and tumultuous political battle over who will succeed her, and it thrusts the Supreme Court vacancy into the spotlight of the presidential campaign.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
DING DONG The Witch is dead!Which old Witch? The Whicked Witch!
Did you read the title of the article? This is Hidin' Biden level confusion....
Oh right, it was the ghoul Melania. Odd, didn't think the dead could die. TIL
Oh, go fuck yourself. Melania is nothing more than Trump's wife, and you hate Trump, so you hate Melania.
Melania is a Trump enabler , fully complicit in his lies.
Or did you miss her speech at the RNC nomination?
You need a funny bone transplant.
I submitted the story when there was nothing in the subs queue about Ginsberg.
Got beaten out, but that's okay.
But, a quick Google tells me that Hillary is alive and - uhhhh - not well, actually, but still alive.
I dunno, she might be a cyborg.
Oh, come on now, everybody knows she is one of the reptilians.
So I didn't know much about RBG's history. Looked it up and figured out why a Republican would post something so hateful.
A woman, one of only two to ever be on the Supreme Court, AND she was JEWISH!
Don't you know "da jews" killed Jeebus????/s
Seriously, you Republicans are so fucking evil and you hide it behind The Bible. We non-brainwashed types see exactly what you are doing, you are only fooling the sweet gullible grandmas that actually believe the insanely hateful rhetoric and lies the GOP uses to manipulate you duncecap wearing drool machines.
McConnell: Trump's Nominee To Replace Ginsburg Will Receive A Vote In The Senate [npr.org]
Cause he is a hypocritical lying piece of shit.
This might turn into a case of "history is written by the winners", so that whether they're recognized as traitorous liars will depend heavily on which way the country sways in the coming years. The people that applaud their policies/choices would instead have them depicted as men who "did the dirty things that needed to be done for the good of the country."
That would apply to domestic writers, but the rest of the world already sees Trump as being worse than Putin or Xi and aren't going to toe the US party line.
Unfortunately things can always get worse.
So, Trump is worse than the guy who's literally putting the Uighur people in concentration camps? I thought the media and cultural elites were against putting ethnic minorities in concentration camps.
That's what the polls around the world are reporting.
401 years of mistreatment of blacks amounts to far more person-years lost.
And more millions of people in absolute terms.
Americans don't realize just how corrosive the American exceptionalism has been to your reputation.
The wars for oil and unconditional support of countries like Saudi Arabia don't help either.
Nor does your reputation as a bully who breaks treaties.
People like you don't do a fucking thing to pressure your politicians to stop genocide happening TODAY.Do you live in the present? Worthless hypocrite.
And people like you actively support a fascist who is committing low level genocide TODAY. Do you have any integrity? Worthless shill.
If there was a penalty for that, I would give a damn. If he loses the election, then it's all good.
Ginsberg should have retired during the final years of Obama's tenure. She was already ANCIENT and not long for this world. This would have given Obama the opportunity to replace her with another liberal justice. But no. She insisted on staying on the bench into Trump's term and she hasn't even been able to do her job for the last 2 years because she was always going to the hospital. Being on the Supreme Court fills people's ego because they are given way too much power, more than anybody ought to have, for LIFE. She should have retired sooner for the sake of her liberal causes and the proper functioning of the court. And I say that as a CONSERVATIVE.
What tripe! During Obama's final years, the GOP was dominating the Senate, and had Ginsberg retired, there would have been two vacancies waiting to be filled by the incoming president.
Like the process or not: If that's all you cared about why not have her retire at start of Obama's Era? Same shit.
She played stupid games, got stupid prize.
Wow! RBG's participation in SCOTUS must have really hurt you guys. We were really stupid to leave her in the game. NOT!!!
Genius, because she held on until she dropped dead in the saddle rather than retire, TRUMP gets to pick the next Supreme Court jurist. How dumb are you Democrats? It didn't have to happen. Pure ego on her part. You may have heard this saying: "The graveyards are full of indispensible men", or in her case, women.
Meant to type "justice", not "jurist".
LOL, RBG set up this little crisis in a teacup. Then made her dying wish known just to make sure it was stirred thoroughly. But, DRAMA!! It's all about the DRAMA!! Expect the snowflakes on New York's Broadway to produce a play for her within the year.
No class as usual.
Republicans get so mad if anyone disrespects their representatives, but if someone doesn't share their political ideology then all that offended outrage goes out the window and being a shithead piece of shit is just fine. That would be totally fine if it weren't for the hypocrisy.
Dude, the woman knew she was dying. She didn't bow out gracefully, she held on to the bitter end just because. But, feel free to disrespect Republican representatives. Won't bother me a bit, since I'm not a Republican. You've probably missed all the contempt I've directed at all the career politicians who have been parasitizing their congressional seats for decades, on both sides of the aisle.
Whatever, be offended. Just don't expect an apology.
"Architect of the legal fight for women's rights in the 1970s"
so the Jew communist/bolshevik orchestrated plan for the destruction of the family, then?
Ughh! Woman must gather. Me hunt!!!
I just wanted to thank the Soylent Staff for providing a timely post reporting the news of RBG's passing, and thanks as well to all the Soylentils and AC's for providing a lively reparte in celebration of the life and legacy of such an extraordinary individual. As I write this there are other news aggregation sites that have yet to post a similar report. Well done everyone. It has helped me move beyond my grieving.
This site has become a home for well-spoken idiots, is a troll's heven, and has become the new \. It is a shame people are so vested in hatred rather than looking at policy and what is good, decent, and constitutional. I would think a community so vested in logic would have better sense.
Feel free to leave.
Cited numerous places:===Days before her death, Ginsburg dictated in a statement through her granddaughter Clara Spera: "My most fervent wish is that I will not be replaced until a new president is installed."===
That statement most certainly has political weight behind it, especially considering the source. The phrase "until a new president is installed" clearly means "anyone but Trump." I doubt Ruth would carelessly word things and it shows her hope that Biden would win the election.
Not what a supposedly-impartial judge at the highest court in the land should express, unless she wants to be regarded as the poster child for legislating from the bench.
And the anyone-but-Trump crowd... well, read the Bender Affidavit; it's enlightening.
