Tonight, @FLOTUS and I tested positive for COVID-19. We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER!

A report from c|net adds:

White House physician Dr. Sean Conley said in a memorandum late Thursday that the president and first lady were "both well at this time, and they plan to remain at home within the White House during their convalescence."

The announcement of the president and first lady's positive coronavirus test results came just hours after the revelation that top White House aide Hope Hicks had tested positive for the virus as well. The president indicated in an earlier tweet that he and the first lady had begun the quarantine process.

Hope Hicks, who has been working so hard without even taking a small break, has just tested positive for Covid 19. Terrible! The First Lady and I are waiting for our test results. In the meantime, we will begin our quarantine process!

                It didn't displace any stories (it was slotted in between two of them without changing their release times) and you can choose not to click on it. You could use an RSS reader that displays headlines only to make that easier for you, instead of using the front page.

                This lame shit, which is the #1 story globally, is an obvious containment zone for comments that would otherwise spill over into other stories. I heard about the news ~20 minutes after it broke, so I pushed it out immediately.

    We get rejected story submissions all the time, yet you editors are able to push out this bullshit on the spot?

    When the commander-in-chief of the largest and most powerful military force in the world comes down with a contagious disease that it potentially debilitating or even fatal?

    Yeah, I'd say that's breaking news.

    Further, I have watched a parent struggle with (and ultimately lose their battle) Acute respiratory distress syndrome [wikipedia.org]. Its symptoms were very much like COVID-19. Exhausted all the time due to lack of oxygen making it through the body. Struggling to breathe. On a ventilator, so can't talk. Going back and forth from the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) and the CCU (Critical Care Unit -- 24/7 coverage by a health professional). I am no fan of Trump, but I would not wish that on anyone.

    I remember a time when the president of the US being ill or injured was a time when the country pulled together in support. (e.g. Kennedy: assassination; Nixon: phlebitis; Ford: assassination attempts)

    In the meantime, you can be absolutely certain that the leaders of other countries are paying very close attention to this development. Unlikely, but should the disease progress to the point that Trump is debilitated (he *is* in his 70s and obese) -- that means VP Mike Pence becomes President. He also has responsibility for the "nuclear football".

    My biggest fear is that he comes down with a mild case and claims his experience is representative of all cases. If he came down with a major case, spent time in the hospital on a ventilator, and adopted (and encouraged) mask wearing -- that could do so much to help stem the tide of this pandemic.

    In a nutshell, this IS a big deal.

      Plus the fact that *4* submissions were made regarding that story (and there's been another couple of follow-on stories already subbed since) should be a clear indication that the members of the SN community that consider it worth subbing stories do consider this an important story (and it's clearly a "breaking" one by definition, thus warranting the fast track). So that is why God gave Covid-19 to Trump, and to the whore of Washington, Hope? And Kellyanne? And Chris, oh, saw that one coming. Thanks be to God, who smites all those who attempt to pack the Supreme Court with Papists, and afflicts them with the Plague. Mark Twain's Patriot Prayer may be in order:

              “Lord our Father, our young patriots, idols of our hearts, go forth into battle —
                be Thou near them! With them — in spirit — we also go forth
                from the sweet peace of our beloved firesides to smite the foe.

                O Lord our God, help us tear their soldiers to bloody shreds with our shells;
                help us to cover their smiling fields with the pale forms of their patriot dead;
                help us to drown the thunder of the guns with the shrieks of their wounded, writhing in pain;
                help us to lay waste their humble homes with a hurricane of fire;
                help us to wring the hearts of their unoffending widows with unavailing grief;
                help us to turn them out roofless with their little children to wander unfriended
                in the wastes of their desolated land in rags and hunger and thirst, sports of the sun flames in summer and the icy winds of winter, broken in spirit, worn with travail, imploring thee for the refuge of the grave and denied it —

              For our sakes who adore Thee, Lord, blast their hopes, blight their lives, protract their bitter pilgrimmage,
                make heavy their steps, water their way with their tears, stain the white snow with the blood of their wounded feet!

              We ask it, in the spirit of love, of Him Who is the Source of Love,
                and Who is the ever-faithful refuge and friend of all that are sore beset
                and seek His aid with humble and contrite hearts. Amen.

                  Sure, you lot just save it for after someone's dead, if they didn't kiss your God's ass enough/the right way/at all, and in that case it's *eternal* torture...despite the fact that that is *not* what the phrase "aionios kolasis" means or even CAN mean in Koine Greek and despite the fact that a good number of ante-Nicene Church fathers were Universalist or Annihilationist!

                  I'm never going to stop beating you upside the head over this. No finite being can do anything that deserves infinite punishment. It's literally not physically possible; it would require infinite time in which to do the crime and infinite power with which to carry it out. Any God that would even think of threatening its creations with this is a demon and anyone worshiping that God-figure is a devil-worshiper.

                  The biggest lie Lucifer ever told isn't that he doesn't exist: it's that God is just like him or worse.

                  For all that I keep telling people they're gonna burn (or fry, in the case of the fat ones...), I know the nature of Hell: it's self-made, self-generated, and by definition self-limiting. You don't have to agree with me there, but you DO owe it to yourself, your religion, and your God to understand what they *really* say. Brush up on your Koine, read your Origen, maybe peruse some sites like tentmaker.org, and do some soul-searching.

                    Of the whoppers Lucifer told in Gen 3:4-5, the big two items that stick out are:

                    "You will not surely die", the serpent said to the woman. "For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."

                    The two big things heard so often since then:
                    1. you will not surely die
                    2. you will be like God, or you will be God, or you are already God

                      And indeed, they did not die on the spot, and "the man has become as one of Us, knowing good from evil." Genesis 3:22. Right. Fucking. There. In. The. Story. You. Are. Belching. At. Me.

                      Also, pop quiz, hotshot! HOW COULD ADAM AND EVE HAVE SINNED IF THEY BY DEFINITION COULDN'T KNOW GOOD FROM EVIL BEFORE THEY ATE THE FRUIT? Fuck me...this is juvenile. Please tell me you do not believe there were literally a literal Adam and a literal Eve, both of whom are the literal originating couple of the entire human race, the world over. The DNA says otherwise, we know population genetics can't produce a stable human population from such low diversity, and where, precisely, did Cain get his wife in that case...?

                      Also, the serpent wasn't originally said to be Satan or Lucifer, and Satan and Lucifer are not the same person: s[h]'t'n is more or less "accuser" in Semitic languages, and Lucifer is a reference to Nebuchadnezzar in the Book of Daniel.

                      Every single time you post something like this you reveal how little of your own religion you truly know. It's like your higher brain functions shut down and you start vomiting your own childhood indoctrination whenever someone pokes you in this one specific spot.

                        This is pointless, but I'll point out two things.

                        They did die. Eventually. And humans have been dying ever since. (It is appointed unto man once to die, etc.)

                        They did know that God commanded not to eat of it. They had free will. They made a choice. You keep asking about evil . . . right there . . . in the story, that's where it starts.

                        That much said, I'm not going to get into a pointless and endless argument. I know it is very important to you that I should not believe. But I do.

                          It's important to me that you act rationally and do not harm other people. The Abrahamic religions, *especially* Islam, are TERRIBLE for this. You're going to do and say and vote for things that harm people because you think the big angry beard in the sky is telling you to and will barbecue you alive for eternity if you don't.

                          I don't care precisely what you believe for its own sake; what happens in your skull is your business. It's when you interact with reality that we may have a problem. You can be a Christian (or a Jew, or a Muslim) and be a good person, but only by "serving two masters." Humanistic values are by definition incompatible with the Abrahamic faiths, and you're living a bizarre sort of bastardized twin half-truth as you are now.

                          Beyond this, your willful stonewalling ignorance is disgusting. You refuse to "get into a pointless and endless argument" as you put it, but you know very well the only reason it'd be pointless and endless is that you flat-out refuse to acknowledge reality. Anything I say that you don't like, even if I can point you to literal chapter and fucking verse, you just ignore and pretend I didn't say it. That's blasphemy, by the way, since according to your religion this is your own Scripture you're choosing to ignore.

                          You can keep this up as long as you live, but as I've been warning other people, there are no more illusions and no more excuses after death. You're in for an unpleasant surprise.

                            I don't know what you think I am going to vote for that will harm people. I believe in trying to be like Jesus, who incidentally, had nothing but compassion for unbelievers. His only unkind words were for the religious leaders of his day. He lets them have it in Matt 23.

                            I get it. You don't believe in God. Or you want me to believe in a different god. It is unclear which. You've read something that you think would make me not believe. I can't make you believe in Jesus any more than you can make me not believe. I'm sorry you seem so upset about that.

                            I don't always act rationally. (some would point to the fact that I program in Java) Most people don't always act rationally, including yourself. You seem to have a very strong emotional reaction to the simple fact of my belief.

                            The reason an argument is pointless is because it isn't going anywhere. I doubt you will believe. And you won't make me not believe. So what point is there? You say I don't believe in reality. You warn I'm in for an unpleasant surprise after death, which implies you believe in an afterlife, which many would say is not reality.

                            I am not now, nor have I ever been upset that we disagree about this. I expect I will see you on SN and there will be topics we agree or disagree about. You are not the only person that I have some differences of opinion with here.

                              You are willfully missing the point here: your religion (as well as Judaism and Islam) is harmful to humanity and both internally inconsistent and incompatible with observable reality. All axioms are destruct-tested by the theorems they give rise to, and all hypotheses falsified by contradictory observations. Your refusal to see that there *is* a contradiction (a tremendous number actually) does not make them disappear any more than, to borrow from CS Lewis, a lunatic can blow out the sun by writing "darkness" on his padded cell wall.

                              Yahweh is not God, because he does not meet the definition of what it is to *be* God, and no matter how many times this is explained to you, you plug your ears and pretend no one actually said anything, A being that is not God, but claims to be God, is a blasphemer. As Yahweh is presumably a spirit of some sort, and the word we usually use for evil spirit is "demon," it therefore follows that the Abrahamic religions are demon worship...which, you must admit, would explain one king hell mountain of a lot about their history *and* their present actions, as well as those of their partisans!

                              Also? Stop this "well well welly well well, *someone's* emotional!" bullshit. OF FUCKING COURSE I'd be "emotional" over someone who would for one moment even consider that a being who acts the way we are told Yahweh does in the Torah, Bible, and Quran was anything *but* some sort of evil demon.

                              Bluntly, it makes me suspect all your vaunted morals and ethics and humanity are a thin, hypocritical veneer over complete moral insanity, and that you're insulting my intelligence and that of every other person you run into. The most charitable explanation I've got is that you really, truly do not understand either your religion or humanistic morals, and are just bumbling along doing whatever feels good to you and clumsily justifying it with shallow, half-assed, ill-researched, completely un-Biblical appeals to Scripture.

                              That is fucking horrifying. YOU are fucking horrifying.

                              Why? Because among other things, it means there is no real basis to your morality. Of necessity, you must subscribe to divine command theory (don't bullshit me about "natural law morality," your God *made* natural law). Under DCT, there *are* no good or evil acts; there is only obeying God and disobeying God, which are 100% good and 100% evil respectively. All acts and decisions are shorn of all context and all connection with reality. Under DCT, if [you believe that...!] your God is telling you to go out and slaughter unbelievers, you go out there and slaughter some unbelievers, lest your God charbroil you alive for all eternity, world without end, amen.

                              Then there's the complete childish refusal to see the bleeding obvious flaws and paradoxes in your fundamental, bedrock beliefs. Listen closely: if the story of Adam and Eve is not literally true, if human souls to not ALL owe their ancestry to Adam and Eve, *the entire edifice of Christianity comes tumbling down.* Even the Catholics, who *say* they accept evolution, carved out a "special creation" exception for A&E because they understand this: no literal Adam and Eve, no Fall, no Original Sin, no need for this sadomasochistic snuff porn charade where your God tortures and kills his son, who is also kinda-sorta himself, to sacrifice him TO himself to stop himself from enforcing his own rules, which he arbitrarily created, but ONLY for people who tell his-son-who's-also-sorta-him telepathically that they'll worship him and accept his sacrifice...you know, that bad weekend he had?

                              All opinions are not equal. Ignorance does not trump knowledge. I know this is painful to hear, but it will accelerate your spiritual growth. You do not need to be an atheist (I'm not!), but you DO need to, as the book itself says, put away childish things.

              The ego runs strong in this one (Trump). He might not live long enough.

              Pay his words no heed for they are fleeting like the wind.

              "A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion." Proverbs 18:2 (ESV)

              "Do you see a man who is hasty in his words? There is more hope for a fool than for him." Proverbs 29:20 (ESV)

              But remember the Bible speaks to ALL of us:

              "2 [a] Be not rash with your mouth, nor let your heart be hasty to utter a word before God, for God is in heaven and you are on earth. Therefore let your words be few." Ecclesiastes 5:2 (ESV)

              So even if you disagree with Trump, he may be part of God's plan (somehow). We can't alter God's plan, but we can make a mess of our own lives, and displease God with our harsh words and hatred and potentially lose blessings. It's better to love and pray for all people.

      I understand your position on this matter. But I think people are weary of the political toxicity on this site.

      I agree that acute respiratory distress syndrome is awful and that we shouldn't wish that on anyone. We should hope that everyone who becomes infected with SARS-CoV-2 will make a full recovery. Unfortunately, that sense of decency isn't shared by everyone on this site. Here are a couple of examples, including one specifically wishing for Trump to die from ARDS:

      https://soylentnews.org/comments.pl?cid=968241&sid=36437 [soylentnews.org]

      https://soylentnews.org/comments.pl?cid=972219&sid=36569 [soylentnews.org]

      Yes, it would be good if leaders who dismiss COVID-19, then become infected with the virus, would start to take this matter seriously. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be happening.

      I get it, this is news, and it's very important. If Trump develops serious symptoms like Boris Johnson did, that'a a huge deal. It's also something that could swing the election, if there are concerns about Trump's health and ho he's going to recover from this virus.

      But I could do without the toxicity. While you are right on that we shouldn't be wishing the worst of COVID on anyone, not everyone shares your sentiment. And I could do without the toxic rhetoric that political stories can provide in the comments. There's too much of that in the world already.
